Title: Any and all site related problems
Post by: smokester on August 26, 2009, 02:01:54 PM
There has been a few incidents recently whereby members have had problems loading the forum, when at the same time other members have had no issues.  These are more than likely to do with local settings or an individuals ISP etc, as they seem to clear all by themsleves given time.  But to be on the safe side and so the maintenance staff here have a clear picture of the site's overall behaviour, could you report any problems you encounter no matter how small, along with a brief description of what occurred.

I personally experience a timeout error sometime between 12 - 12.15am (GMT) virtually every night.  I believe this is because this is the time when the main server in Houston runs its maintenance routine, and for a minute or 2 service is suspended.  This has also been the cause of our overnight outages (IMO), as I believe my host here that rents the bandwidth, failed to restart our apache server after the routine had finished.  That seems to be fixed now as they have ensured me that have an automatic program that checks the server status every five minutes, but it will explian that error around that time if you happen to experience it.

There have been some login problems reported that seem to be cookie related, and I have tweaked some settings here to try and resolve it.  If anyone all of a sudden finds that there are problems with new posts being shown, or login timing out etc, please let me know here.

Guests and logged out members should see a message atop the index page with my email address included, you can contact me there as it is the one I use when the site generates errors and reports them etc.

Your account doesn't show any errors this end and I am working on resolving a cookie issue that we might have that could also be the cause of your problem.  If it happens again try deleting your cookies and trying again.

Just the other day I was sending a PM and I'd get a timed out message , and this happened three times over.
The rest of the site was fine.
I hit back as well as navigated to my PM inbox from the site.
The PM ended up sending all three times I tried sending it despite the message.

It's all a bit odd as the forum doesn't appear to be spitting out any errors.  I have tweaked some settings that are to do with cookies, but this was after some of these problems started to occur.  When we migrate to a new server I plan to install version 2 anyhow, and that may well see the back of these little annoyances.

I accidentely logged into the gamekeeper account using Opera today, and experienced that error when I tried to log out.  I don't think's it's doing much other than informing you that you are not logged in anymore - even if it appears that you are, but it does prove that we might have a site wide issue with this and I'll get on trying to find the root cause of it.

I have my account logged in 'forever' and just close the window, so I have never seen this.

I will log in to Gamekeeper and see if I get it.

Normally I use FF and log in to Gamekeeper using IE.

I couldn't log out using IE (logged in with both FF and IE), so I closed IE and could log in and out with FF, with no prob's.

There has been around 3 or 4 people that have experienced this prob or something similar, so there is more and likely an error somewhere here on the site and is not really browser specific - it's just handy to state which one you were using when something does go wrong so we can rule it in or out as the case may be.

Yeah, this time I mailed the host after 5 minutes and said it looked like they hadn't restarted Apache (it was showing inactive in my control panel), hopefully that will sort it for a while and I am signing up for a new host before the end of this month.  Perhaps we will have more luck with the new one? I do however, have 3 months left with this host and it might take a while to get a new forum ready before we migrate over.

Just today, as I was checking out the fora, I noticed that some of the threads, when I clicked on "New" took me to page one of the thread instead of "the first unread post".  I assume this is due to the tweaking/pruning smokester has been doing (the "New" link is the thread link plus an "anchor" to the message #.  Since smokester has pruned some posts, that number is no longer valid so instead the link defaults to the beginning of the thread).

Not complaining, just doing my due diligence and recording the action here.

I'm not sure.  Do you copy the code from an image host or something and the BBCode tags are not showing when you paste in the reply box?

It's not HTML it's the BBC that has a bug.

For some reason the colour tag with the RGB in your code below isn't working on these boards and there are big differences with the BBC here compared to the old version.

Code: [Select]
[font=arial][size=13px][color=rgb(0, 51, 153)]Michael Keaton[/color][/size][/font]
It is confirmed as a bug but I can't see them fixing it any time soon.  For now I would use the colour presents we have here for posting and I'll try and install a mod that gives you the complete spectrum of BBC colours.

okays, i do use the colors that are present when updating the score board. i get that code if i copy the text from another website and post here. its not liek the old site were it only copied the text and not the style to.  I'll just post and then go back and edit.  thanks 4 the help.

Post by: smokester on November 03, 2009, 05:19:10 PM
I actually think the RGB addition isn't recognised as the board isn't equipped to.  It does register the Hex code and I have found a mod that will allow both formatting of text and/or its background to any of the BBC colours, but it is another manual installation so I'll do it tomorrow in when its quiet.

I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I had a problem accessing this site this morning around 9:15. When I finally accessed the forum, it was very slow and when I made a post it took about 10 minutes for it to go through.

I noticed the gap between that post and the one previous (I think by JackFrost) was several hours. Just thought I'd mention it.

The last few mornings I have logged in there has been that "server load" problem with our server.  However, today I wasn't around so I'll check some logs and see if anything was recorded but it certainly sound like the exact same thing.  Hopefully it isn't something awry with our forum causing it.

I have no idea why that happened other that it being a bug in the mod that won't allow regular members post spoilers in PMs (you can still post them on the boards?).  I'll check the code again as I manually installed it and could have made an error somewhere (has been know to happen).

I am getting a little tired of the server load continually spiking even though I realise it not essentially the host's fault, but more likely another account on the server hogging the resources.

Most of you probably miss it but every now and then we get periods whereby the pages struggle to load, and they can last up to an hour at a time.  I am constantly in touch with the host and they monitor the server 24/7 to try and catch what is causing it, and they have offered to move us on a couple of occasions.

Today, after another bout of server load spiking I requested that the site be moved to a less busy server as they had offered.  This shouldn't be much trouble for them and I don't think we will have a propagation period as such, but if there is a break in service you'll know why it has happened and you should keep trying until it is all resolved.

As I have mentioned a couple of posts ago, we are now going to jump server.

All it takes is another account on a shared server to do something like a huge mail out, for it to tie the server up until the request is completed.  I was told that there were custom scripts running on our server set up by another account holder, and they were the cause of our extended outages.

No worries as we will be on another server soon and the service isn't terrible on this one anyhow.

Update from Smokester.

"Basically what has happened is that because they copied our site to the new server before it went live (which was a day later), there has been a day's delay and those interim posts are on the old database,

I am stuck on the old site as the propagation isn't complete yet so I am seeing a ghost.

People have the choice of waiting for me to move the updated database to the new server (which will overwrite any posts from today) or simply update the threads there to catch up so to speak.

I'll try and hop dimensions so I can see the new server.."

Database crash, or restore from old backup?

I figured this was the case as well since some of my posts are missing (the SWF of Marzipan from Homestar Runner most obviously) and it wasn't in the Recycle Bin. :D

Also, I notice that the games are going on as normal...this will definitely mess up the scores and "Used" lists when smokes finally moves over the db.

EDITED:

I also send out an e-mail and PM to everyone (well, halfway through the PM process I got the "white screen" so not sure if it finished or not) telling everyone to make sure they read this thread.

Ok I am here now but there were some waifs and strays still stuck on the old server (I left food out so don't worry).

It's the host fault really we lost posts as they rebuilt my account on the new server on wednesday and made it live on thursday night or friday morning depending on your timezone.  That meant that the condition of the database was that of wednesday when you first made it here.  If everything is back on track I'll leave it as is, otherwise, I have to restore it back to what it would have been yesterday morning and the inter-dimensional shift is already screwing with my brain.

On a brighter note the new server is very powerful and has far fewer accounts on it.  I have been told by Buster that he has also experienced problems and we may not be out of the woods yet - but we should be good for a while.

Good to see everything's getting back to normal, things here do seem to be a lot quicker on this server. The ice outside melted overnight as well, so I'll be able to venture outside today with a more purposeful stride.

I was trying for about five minutes before everything started working again, but it may have been longer judging when the last post was.

It's a strange one as I could access the server and everything looked fine.  I went to see if another domain of mine was working as if it was it would have meant that the site was at fault, but just as I loaded another domain this one sprang to life so I couldn't tell?

The server load is already up on our new server but unlike the old one it doesn't seem to clip out and cause errors, just some slow page loading on occasion.  I am not ruling out another move though if our problems persist, as I may be able to get a refund.

I have been trying very hard to sort out all the server load spikes sorted out as for the last week or so we have been right back where we were with slow page loading and time-out errors.  It has been a bit disappointing and hard work but last night I was informed that they had identified an account on the server that was causing the spikes and had suspended it.  I haven't been around much today as it was my little girls birthday so can anyone confirm whether the site has been operating better today, or at least hasn't had any spells where the loading was noticable slow?

Thanks

How's the Greg Taylor hearing going buster?

Actually very well. They have (in my opinion of course) proven that every shred of so called evidence was erroneous and in one instance, deliberately misleading.  This is a quote of my post earlier on the subject-
Quote
The live feed is over. They have stopped until Monday morning at 10 am. The video of today's proceedings is not available yet, but as soon as it is, I will post it here.

In watching today's proceedings, I have personal opinion on the testimony. It seemed very apparent that the original blood report from the SBI agent was misleading and untruthful. Whether deliberate or by accident, only he knows for sure, and it is up to the judges to decide. His lab notes verified that the tests on the "so-called" blood spatters on Greg's vehicle was negative. The initial tests in the field only reveal a possibility of blood, which gives cause for further testings in the lab. The tests in the lab concluded that there was no evidence that it was human blood at all, much less from the victim. In the original trial, the official report from the SBI to the DA's office did not state that, it stated that it WAS blood. That information was used by the prosecution to bamboozle a jury into believing that it was the victim's blood on Greg's vehicle.

In today's testimony, the defense established clearly in my opinion, that the "so-called" evidence that the prosecution used 17 years ago was incorrect - Keeping in mind also that 2 days ago, another DNA expert confirmed that there was absolutely no conclusive evidence of any of it being blood at all, even less that it was human blood.  The earlier expert also verified that there was absolutely no DNA evidence to place Greg anywhere near the victim, nor to place the victim in the vehicle.

I see an obvious misconduct on the part of the SBI and the prosecution 17 years ago. Although i have known of this and suspected it, the last 4 days' evidence reveals it.

This is my opinion again-  Greg should be immediately set free, and Mr. Willoughby and Mr. Ford should go to prison for the exact same amount of time that Greg has served.
Sorry Smokes, I forgot what thread I was in. You can move these if you need. :)

My fault entirely.

I just wanted to ask how things were going, and I have no respect for thread title or direction. On the "start a thread here" thing - I think that most folk get their fix on the Den (I just can't post there any more).

Considering the trouble I have had with the server load recently, I'm just glad your posts have managed to update at all.  Besides which, I am technically a mod of this section so I get rank of the others here.

We have had a few days where the load has been very low and the forum performing well because of it.  However, although the load is not clipping yet it is now right back up to the upper limit of its safe margin and if it persists I am going to move us and my other "dynamic" sites to a different host altogether, so that I do not have to monitor and chase the server on a daily basis (I am pretty sick of it I can tell you).  It won't mean any distruption really other than an hour of two while I move the database over, and I'll keep everyone informed if and when I decide to do that.

wow so much work for nothing ( wages )

The bad thing about our new host and the load problems that have plagued us consistently, is that monitoring them has made me more distant from the activity on the site itself. If it weren't for that I get plenty from the forum and its members (especially OC1) by way of entertainment (as I'm sure we all do) and that is reward enough.

The server has been struggling all day and I have made 3 reports to them of the failures.  The server is undergoing "analysis" which I am hoping is why the load is naturally up, but I am nearly resigned to moving us to a UK host that is a bit more expensive but far more solid.

I am finding customer support 'irritatingly' helpful now - they remind me of my little girl and her puppy dog eyes when I am trying to tell her off.

I, like you, understand that people can run scripts that can cripple the server for the rest of the accounts on it, but it is hardly yours and my job to rectify it.

They have suspended even more accounts now (apparently) so the service is good again for the time being, but it has already started to creep up again and it hasn't even been 24hrs?

Sorry christ for messin' with your thread again, I'll leave a pint in the pump for your to make up for it.

Smokes, I understand that as well. They tried and often went overboard to attempt to help me. Unfortunately, like you said, it isn't our job to monitor what scripts their other customers are running, that is their job. I hope it gets better. I am happily back with the old host and no hiccups yet.

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The server is always struggling now and as far as I am concerned they either cannot or are not doing anything about it for the long term.  I am probably going to stick us on another host with a small account that is dedicated just to this forum.  It should get rid of these probs and make life easier on myself and other staff but until then I would imagine the site will keep spitting out the occasional error.

Regularly when I am PM'd, and not logged on, I get an email telling me that I rec a message. Its within 60-90 after the fact. Over the the last 2-3 days my emails are days behind the actual PM's. Just telling you in case it helps resolve anything else.

Well, one way or the other we will have to get the forum off this host as it is far more trouble than it's worth.  The server load is normal today which I personally think is the exception to the rule, but hopefully it will stop the errors for a while including the email notification lag.

Hmmm.. odd.  I have got the service we are entitled to now with all the spammers off the server.  The load has been remarkably low and if it continues to be, then the occassional spike while someone is doing some maintenance on another account, is completely acceptable and to be expected.  Let's hope that is what happened a little while ago although I can't say I experienced it to any degree myself?
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems
Post by: smokester on March 12, 2010, 08:02:37 AM
Ok, I saw that one myself and it must be to do with problems the host has as the entire company site is down?

Doesn't look at this moment that it is the server we are on itself that is the problem, rather the control that the host has over it.

I've been informed that the servers are to undergo some network maintenance which requires a core server reboot.  Sometime over the weekend we'll go down for 15 - 30 minutes but I'm hoping they'll be up and running without issue afterwards.  I think it will happen around 1am Sunday eastern yankee time so we should be quiet anyhow, and the only Brit awake at that time in the U.K is Goldie.

Maintenance Notice

Dear *,

We are contacting you to inform you about some upcoming emergency maintenance.

We have to replace one of the electrical breaker in our data center that would affect all the servers on one rack.

You are receiving this maintenance notice because your server is among the servers which will be affected by this emergency maintenance.

This is scheduled to be performed on Thursday (December 2nd, 2010) at 2 PM EST, and the estimated downtime is around 30 min, however we are forecasting 60 minutes to be safe.

We are sorry for the short notice but delaying this could risk the stability of the servers on this rack.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation with this.

Your account didn't show any errors and the forum logs didn't see anything happening with your IP.  It may have been a local issue to you but I did notice in our site's logs that we had quite a nasty bot trying to do all manner of things to get into the site's files.  It may have been a hacking attempt that screwed with the logins temporarily - what time did the problem occur?

Maintenance Notice

Dear *,

We are contacting you to inform you about an emergency network maintenance that we will be performing at 6:30 PM EST today ( Friday, Dec 10, 2010).

The estimated downtime for this maintenance is only one minute , however as always if any problems arise then it may take longer. In any case we will be trying to keep the downtime window to minimum.

This maintenance will resolve the slow speed issues that clients have been noticing recently.
Thank you for your cooperation.

I haven't noticed any slowness or randomness as you mentioned but I've only been popping in to see if there were new posts.  There hasn't been much posting today, which does strike me as odd, so this might just be a result of the connection issue you're experiencing and I'm just seeing the symptoms out of context.

Looking at that screen shot it definitely looks like the forum wasn't connecting to the DB, as none of the navigation is there nor any kind of guest view.  That would rule out a cookie issue on Sub's side and a database error on ours.  I have informed the host that I thought there might be something badly configured (a script of some sort), as these problems are so on and off.

The server is performing way above accepable so it is not the hardware or a spammer hogging it, I just think they have to tweak the system to iron these issues out which I am actively pushing for.

I love a good double entendre, as the actress said to the bishop.

I can confirm that the recent performance issues are not at our end, as I have received this response to my report:

Our Reply:

You are correct that this is not a local problem for you nor is it related to server load itself. It looks like there is a problem with the network load on our end that we are working to mitigate as quickly as possible.

I have never been with a host so responsive that's for sure, or reasonably priced.  They pick a ticket up within 10 minutes and usually answer within an hour.

I missed any trouble unfortunately but that sort of time on a Sunday is synonymous with maintenance routines which would slow the server down.

Apparently there are still residual problems from the Ddos attack, this is how are server looked for a couple of hours:

I'm hoping we won't experience many more of these glitches, but if we do, they should be resolved within an hour or 2.

Yeah, we were down good and proper.

The full explanation is here and I don't actually mind when there's a real hardware failure as that is bound to happen sooner or later, it's the little niggling issues that hosts don't admit to or solve that pisses me off - like how our last host behaved.

We are contacting you to inform you about the network outage we had earlier was because of a faulty electrical wiring that caused servers to reboot unexpectedly, servers were brought back and the faulty wiring were fixed.

Currently most servers are running automated RAID rebuild which will cause high server load till it finishes.

We apologize for any inconvenience and are working diligently to fully restore service.

Is it just me or is the site/server really struggling?  Everything looks fine with all services running and a low server load, but for me it is taking eons for pages from here to load.

If it isn't just me then I ask for the server to be looked at.

Title: Re: Any and all site related problems
Post by: smokester on February 22, 2011, 05:46:40 AM
It was odd as the control pannel for our site was also loading slowly for me (which can only mean the problem was server side and not local to our site), but every thing looked completely normal when it did load.  Other sites were ok so my ISP is an unlikely culprit, but I was waiting about 45 seconds for a page to fully load here for no apparent reason, so it seems.

Hopefully then it's local to my machine, which is an easy fix.

Post by: smokester on March 05, 2011, 04:16:23 AM

Yes I witnessed the same and gave up in the end.  The server load was at 0.02 so it isn't a routine/process running in the backround somewhere, so I have asked for the server configuration to be looked at to see if something is off.

The company I use is really big and perhaps the most reasonable priced, but lately they have been hit by quite a few DoS attacks.  A lot of spammers like to set up there as it's cheap and then they duly get booted off when they overload the servers, but they may hold a grudge eh..

smokes, I sent you the e-mail as soon as I noticed it down.  Hadn't really checked in a few hours though so I can't nail down any closer time than that.  Was it the server or the network down?  Server Logs might be able to narrow down the timeline.

For some reason the write permission was changed on the index file, and the host cannot confirm why that happened.  I lost the ability to send email from another couple of site accounts the other day and that turned out to be that they had upped the server security that in turn meant you required SMTP authentication for outgoing.

I'm assuming that there have been some server tweaks that have had some affect on their clients' sites, and this was just one of them.  Server load is still miniscule and all other systems are very good, so nothing to worry about as such.
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems
Post by: dweez on June 20, 2011, 03:09:33 PM
Yeah, it's annoying that they tweak it and don't properly notify the clients but having SMTP auth for sending, IMO, is "A Good Thing (tm)".

Apparently our index is hitting our soft memory limit for some reason, and without knowing what changed, this is a toughy.

The final version of this software is our now so I could just shut us down for a weekend and clean up our bulletholed database (it's been through the mill somewhat) and set us up all nice and lemony fresh.  It would make us stable for a long time coming and should improve our performance.

If that is the case I would ask members to prune their inboxes if they are getting bloated, as that can shave off 5-10% of our database size.  No panic yet though.

We are indeed all "lemony fresh" now. Getting everything back the way it was will take me some time as I only have an hour here and there these days, and new ideas are always welcome while we are rebuilding.

The database is clean now so I might install some goodies that were unavailable to the old shoddy one.  Watch this space..

I dropped a hint about that a while back.

Would that be a self-destructing hint?

I usually just PM ZTX and mention the bits on the boards that have yet to be corrected, but that was before you retook your position there.  Now I just think about them really hard and.. voilà.

Is there any other sort? You did respond to it, but obviously missed the point. Buck up.

I'm as sharp as a whatchamacallit.

Demonoid (both main site and fora) has got real issues at the moment. Ever since the last upgrade, "Umlauf" has been really struggling - the codebase seems to be falling apart.

I can't even imagine the scale of the problem, and wouldn't want to even if I were a Code monkey.

The server suffered from a serious hardware failure last night/afternoon and it wasn't easy for the host admins to get it up again.  They are having to replace both drives one by one now as they were both dying, so there may be a glitch or 2 to come. I am however, reliably informed, that these won't be of any great disruption.

I have been informed that all the data on the old server is slowly being copied to new hardware hence the high server loads and occasional page timeouts. Once this is done we should be back to normal and hopefully we will remain trouble free for some time.

Until then everything is a bit hit and miss and I can only apologise in advance if you do experience problems.

There have been some troublesome accounts on our server that were using to for mail spamming.  This overloads the server and all other accounts suffer because of it. The techs have apparently weeded them out and the server is looking in good shape again.

Thanks for the heads up though as it helps to pin down the time and then the offending account.

I have to admit that I am really unhappy with our service, post the IP change, as I think they have seen it as an opportunity to increase the amount of accounts on the server.  The load is never really 'low', for any great length of time at least, and more often than not it clips over its safe limit and then we get page loading problems.

I have just renewed our contract in October so we'll have to stuggle on, but next year I'll get us a new host.

That must have been at exactly the same time as I was fixing it as originally it was on line 2932, but as I fixed one bit of code it just moved somewhere else.

In the end it was the table that was borked and had to be fixed.

This is a very strange error as the server looks completely healthy.  It is affecting other sites so it isn't the forum that's broken (that's the good news), but I have yet to get any kind of handle on the error either from the main host or from our logs.

That message now appears because the host suggested I update the site files even though 2 domains running different versions are having the same problem.  I can update the database but I don't think that is the cause of the problem, as it seems that it sporadically loses some of the connection to the database.

They are now telling me that it is because of what I have set as the database username on another domain - which would be funny if it wasn't so important.

I am getting nowhere with the host so I am going to request migration to a different server or just cancel this account for a U.K based account which is more expensive but far more solid.

Hopefully this update will post when I press the button, but if not I'll mail it out.

Not to worry about that as I was just updating the DB to match our site version.  There is definitely some very iffy configuring going on with our server as it lost the connection with the database 18 time while upgrading? Maybe you should tell them what's what Dweezo?

You've probably noticed but we have that shaky database error recurring again.  It doesn't knock us out completely and I'm sure it's just a configuration file on the server that has a bug and should be easily sorted out by the host.  With our fingers crossed that is.

Man, they copied dozens of write enabled index files to every folder and sub folder on the site, presumably so they can hack it again easily whenever they choose.

Dweez, it's even worse (or funnier) this time than the ticket I showed you last time.  They are insisting it has to do with the diasfora database when I am getting the error across 3 dynamic sites.  No matter how hard I push this multi-site error cannot be specific to one, they still can't hear me.

The two guys that fix these kinds of server issues for me easily do not appear to be around and I getting worried that perhaps they have left the building.  So I am afraid we are at the mercy of the "we do our best" team that don't seem to be able to spot simple configuration issues like this one - after all, the last one was just the server clock resetting intermittently.

Hopefully it will get better soon.

I think we're all good now and there hasn't been a database error for the last 6 or 7 hours.  Please report any error pages you may encounter as usual though.

There was a period a little while ago when I couldn't access the site or even then entire hosting company's site.  They must have had a power spike or something or maybe even a power out in the district.

That sounds like a server load spike and I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks XT.

I am out early and on a job at present and so have less time here (sob), so these reports are really useful otherwise I'd have no idea of how the service is going.  I'll run some maintenance anyhow in case it's our end.

Thanks very much everyone, and the holiday was terrific.  BTW Goldie, I met and befriended another fella and his wife and daughter, and it transpired that he actually works at your place (If it's Rolls Royce Derby that is).  He is an engine designer and was telling me about the new engine for Boeing that has to have a 5% efficiency saving, which he said is pretty unheard of.

Thanks XT and I managed 2 bottles of Bounty, 2 bottles of Kweyol spiced, 2 bottles of Coconut rum and a traditional spiced bottle (full of all the cloves, cinnamon etc) bought from Castries market. Of course, I am going to drink it all myself in everyone's absence.

I had said you lived in Leicester and worked on RR engines, and he then supposed you worked in the Derby plant which I didn't know enough about to be sure he wasn't right.

The Baron's is the best hot sauce ever made but the missus bought some homemade stuff from the market there which I'm sure would light if you put a match to it.

Did you try to post twice within 5 seconds?  To prevent flooding, mostly by spammers, fora often have a flood control setting preventing someone from posting a 2nd time until the flood interval is reached (ours is obviously 5 seconds).  Maybe you accidentally hit the "Post" button twice.  Both clicks registered, trying to post the same comment twice, the second being the "second post".

The accidental double-click has happened to me before.

Things weren't working well for the last hour or so. The forum looks OK now.

There might be a dodgy account on the server, like a spammer or someone running their own resource intensive scripts.  Usually they get booted off quite quickly or advised that their activity is hogging the server, and then things improve.

If I can catch the server overloading, then I can get them to jack the offending account even faster.

I don't know if you recall, but one of the idiots who was hogging the server a couple of years ago, turned out to be me.  It was when I had the testing forum which was a copy of this one (and others) all running an automatic maintenance routine at the same time that I'd forgotten to stagger.  Slightly red faced when the host eventually came back to me after studying all the logs and emails of me shouting at them, and told me it was my sites.

Whoops!

There may have been some server upgrades a short while ago as they have been scheduled and the load was astronomical which could indicate that.

Was this the maintenance where they were moving our server into a different rack in the same datacenter?

I was trying to be kind I think.  Truth is, the load was at 204.8 (shouldn't go above 10) and I had to tell them that.  I did politely add that it wasn't my job to monitor the server, it is theirs.

They need you dweez (small d) as I think their admins take too many naps.
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems
Post by: dweez on January 23, 2013, 05:12:40 PM
/me tries to remember what a nap feels like.

Holy crud!  Don't they have some kind of automation monitoring the server loads?  Say, if cpu/ram/blah usage > {static percentage}, then send an e-mail to Joe Topdog.  I would have thought a monitoring system would have been standard for a venture like theirs.  Unless you were spot on with the nap thing.
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems
Post by: smokester on January 23, 2013, 06:06:53 PM
They aren't really that bad so I shouldn't moan.  Some hosts I've been with didn't even have people working around the clock. That said, our host has some great customer service but not that many techs. The irony being: if they had enough admins they wouldn't need all the support staff.

I usually use my ISP's DNS servers, but I recently tried OpenDNS and this is what I got when I attempted to visit Diasfora:

What's really annoying is that they don't give you a "let me do it anyway" option, essentially blocking the site entirely to OpenDNS users. My ISP's DNS servers have no problem with this site and I have switched back.
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems

I can only presume that's a hangover from an attack we were subject to in the past.  There isn't trace of any malicious or unauthorised files anywhere in this account, and is is regularly scanned by the main host.

I used to like fishing.

I have noticed recently that occasionally when I refresh a page, it only loads about halfway so I end up with half a page of red/white theme and half a page of just black background. Normally I blame any issues with web pages on Firefox's accelerated descent into horrific, painful, ridiculous, avoidable, "Oh my God why are they doing this?!?!?" awfulness, but I'll mention it anyway as it is a "loading issue" and the problem may be site related as well.

They installed a new support system for the host that you have to be able to read martianish to operate.  I can't and Google translate was just pants so I spammed a couple of buttons that looked like tickets and we seem to be back to normal now.

No moon rock though.

I checked and it looks like there could have been a load spike for a little while as it spat out some database connection errors.  They happen and are pretty much unavoidable, so if that was the case we should be ok now.  Any more and could mean that the server clock or something is off again.  I'll keep an eye on things.

The invite system keeps us completely locked down and, to date, has never been compromised even after being hacked.  Any new members have be screened and sanctioned by one of the members, who are the best judge of character.

Any new faces are all welcome and are all legit.

The server has chucked out about 40 or 50 errors in the last 16 hours but as I haven't been around, I can't tell whether it's local to us or server wide.  I have a few dynamic sites on this server and I am trying to see the error on one of those so I know how to approach this.

I'll check for database errors here in the meantime.

Thank you smokester! Looks to be working fine now.

Frayed knot.  Here's my Yahoo account that receives notifications, and your post is the one at 23.26. You can see it's still spitting out errors after that:

I had to refresh the page just now to get to the site. Before I restarted my computer I occasionally had to refresh pages when I selected a different topic.

Got a new error just a minute ago (11:25pm EST).  No SMF error this time.  This time it said "MySQL server has gone away".  Refresh fixed it but man, did that scare me for a hot second.

I'm getting them now, too, but refresh seems to fix it most of the time.

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

After refresh

MySQL server has gone away

After the second refresh the page loaded.

The host is doing the usual and not really listening.  It's always akin to the ISP issue you get when you connection is down, whereby they get you to jump through hoops until finally they realise the problem is at their end.

I have managed to get this error on other sites by continuously refreshing, which means that mySQL their end is not functioning correctly.  I could set up Wordpress, Joomla etc in subdomains and still get the error, so it is pretty unequivocal it a problem with the server again.

In the past the responses have made dweez and I laugh, especially as he's the real Macoy, but I am meant to be at work as I write so I am in laughing mood.

One thing of note though: the host has a new support system the is very pretty to look at, however, the ticket I raised yesterday I do not have the permission to read today. So to respond to it, I had to start a new ticket.  I'm guessing that to respond to that, I'll have to start another and so on.

Great new system and whatever happened to the idea that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?..

It's happening all the time.  I wish they'd just reboot the mySQL and see if that helps.  It's fixed things outright in the past.

At the moment I'm hearing nothing from them so there has been no attempt to fix it yet (you are going to continue getting the error).  I am notified every time it happens so reporting it is not that important unless you receive a new, undocumented error.

As soo as there is some progress I'll post it up here.

Sorry again everybody.

"Lost connection to MySQL server during query" - so that's new.
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems

The host we have today, does not resemble the one I signed up to in 2009.  There has been no improvement with this issue, nor has there been any correspondence whatsoever from customer support.  So called "improvements" to their system, have resulted in quite the opposite to their service.

So I have decided to move host as soon as it is convenient for me to do so.  Our contract does not expire until October, but if I can migrate this month, I will.  Hopefully it will be straightforward but sometimes it can be a little tricky, and either way, there will be some loss of service.

I'll keep you all posted and I fear that the error won't go away any time soon.

It's a simple fix but it appears that they've done away with anyone remotely techie, in tech support.

It's not just me, our host is fast becoming the scourge of reseller hosts.  There are similar reports and complaints in webhosting forums everywhere.

I've had a chat with our soon to be new host, and they seem to have their priorities exactly right.

In my experience, MySQL will just pack up altogether in the end and they'll have to reboot it.

3 days without any reply for emergency level tickets.  This host has now, well and truly, become completely untenable.

I'll sign up to a new host this week and claim a refund for our remaining months on the contract.  With any luck, I may receive it by Christmas 2016.

That's odd as I cannot find a server error.  Perhaps the server was completely offline for that time so nothing was being generated.

I'll check the service announcements as sometimes there are outages due to upgrades or maintenance.

Thanks for the heads-up.

They must've.

I was trying to keep an eye on things while I was away but the wifi was so temperamental that if I got an error, I couldn't tell whether it was site-side or my connection. It appears it may have been a bit of both.

I'm actually finding the page load time much slower?  I know there will be some teething issues but I was hoping for improved performance somewhere down the line.

How's it loading for everyone else?

Watching the server load it keeps exceeding 10 which would cause the site to fail.  Either they've oversold it or someone is hogging the resources.

As some may have noticed, we've had very serious server issues.

Apparently things were so bad they had to install new drives and re-install from backup as things could not be recovered and the server, no matter what they tried, kept becoming unresponsive.

RAID is a way of configuring hard drives (hdd) so that in the case of a hdd failure data isn't lost and the server can still operate, albeit in a degraded state.  Once the failed hdd is replaced, the RAID rebuilds that hdd with the data that was on the failed one.

Some RAID configurations allow for being able to lose more than one hdd and still be functional but for most of the common configs, if more than 1 hdd is lost, the whole array and all data is lost.

It sounds like they lost an hdd, replaced it with what they thought was a good hdd but the rebuild process kept failing.  One of those failures cause the raid array data to become corrupted.  Thus, after sorting out and replacing any of the bad hdds, they would have had to restore from backups.

Sounds like they did what they were supposed to but kept having bad luck (bad hdd, bad replacement hdd, corrupted array).  All in all, it sounds like despite all the obstacles, they did a good and quick job of restoring back to the latest data they had.

The biggest problem for me was that I run a few different email accounts through various domains, most of which are for professional use.  I was really worried that during the downtime the mail would be lost, but thankfully that was not the case.

It could be someone hogging the server unintentionally.

Maintenance -- Network Issue

We had a slight power disruption at our Atlanta DC today due to which some servers went down. We have managed to restart most but a few are still being worked as they went into auto FSCK (File System Check). These servers will be back online as soon as their Filesystem is brought into a consistent state.

Additionally, few of our shared/reseller/SDX servers using InnoDB MySQL engine have MySQL service issues, we are working on them to restore the service ASAP, rest of the services are fine on these servers.

Thanks for your patience and cooperation during this incident. We will continue to post more details in timely manner.

I've found with nearly all the hosts that I've used that tech support is a case of the blind leading the blind. It's only when they call in the freelancers that things get done properly.

In all honesty our host isn't terrible especially after they sold out to a bigger, shinier company, and usually the initial ticket is enough for them to address and fix the issue. In the past, I would have had to repeat myself dozens of times - usually including what I think the problem and solution might be - and 4 or 5 tech support folk later they'd end up taking my advice, claiming it was their own idea, and still not properly implementing it.

It's at these times that the mashie niblick goes back in the bag in favour of a 1 wood.

Many apologies for the short break in service.

The reason for our downtime is that the Nominet gods decided that they, all of a sudden, didn't like the registrant's name.

I sent them such a sarcastic email that would have even made chris T wince and, remarkably, I got an incredibly polite reply that have me precise instructions to get us back and functioning.

I was unable to log in for two days.  I kept getting error messages.

I think as Nominet suspended the domain for the update to the WHOIS, the records were duly changed and after re-activation it has to propagate again. This can take up to 72 hours I believe and would explain why some people could get back in while others had to wait.

As long as you're still here, Six, we're good.

I know some have had some intermittent issues logging in and I am no exception. The server looks in good shape with medium and stable server loads, so it might be that I haven't done any maintenance on our site for months, if not years, and we have a little error somewhere.

This weekend I'll do some housekeeping and check the tables properly in an attempt to get us running smoothly again.

I had intermittent problems.  Today I got a forbidden message, but it was trying to log in on the last url info, so I cleared everything but the diasfora.co.uk and was able to get the home page & to log in as normal.

I don't know if that little tidbit helps w/your maintenance, but it does explain a little about my access problems.  I think a few days ago, I tried this as well, but it did not work, so whatever you did in the interim helped.

The server is shocking at the moment and I have threatened to jump ship with the host. They are apologetic and are trying to get this server stable so we'll hang on a little longer.

The hosting package is up for renewal on the 14th of this month and if we are still getting the unacceptable server errors at that time, I think we should migrate elsewhere. Lets hope that we don't lose anyone in an alternate dimension like we did the last time we migrated.

I don't know what happened to this company but since it was taken over by JaguarPC all that seemed to improve was their ability to raise hosting costs. Everything else went south.

They have offered to migrate us already so I might suggest they do that sooner rather than later.

I accidentally charged my phone overnight. I've been keeping it at 10% for a WEEK waiting on the new charger because Samsung said I needed to buy one with "adaptive fast charging".

I'm still smarter than the hosting company here. Holy poo. If you're wanting a client to renew, you roll out the red carpet. This feels like an intentional "Yeah, we suck. golly off out of our model village!"

I've got all sorts of goofy poo messages. Good old SMF, that ISE, a couple times I got 403's.

It's like my dealings with Samsung. Treat the customer like poo so they buy something more expensive.

Six, I posted a thing about stargate but the server ate it. You were right, Jack got snaked, but the Tok'ra fixed it before it became a problem. Their name means "Against Ra", the baddie who got blown up in the movie "STARGATE".  So like, Jack should charge them royalties, since he killed the guy. Even dropped a damn fine one liner. "Give my regards to King Tut, bottom". His Flat top is also legendary. RDA admitted he couldn't pull it off.

I forgot the transport rings were in the movie, dang. They even have that fantastic sound effect "gigishigur"

Here's a couple of excerpts from the latest support ticket:

Quote
Thank you for your patience. The track record for this server has been terrible as of late, there is no denying that. After a lengthy investigation we determined a number of drives in our raid array do have errors and thus we have started the planning to replace the drives.

If you and your clients can stick it out for just a bit longer we will get this matter resolved once and for all.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Regards,

And the latest one:

Quote
At this time we have just replaced another one of the faulty drives and the raid array is now in rebuild mode. We realize this situation is not pleasant but we are making every effort to ensure that this process goes as smoothly as possible.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Regards,

I am assuming that the lengthy outage last night was to do with the rebuild.

I would be inclined to see if things improve but checking the server status just now the load is at nearly 9. Somewhere above 10 we bounce out so I think I'll still request a migration.

As yesterday the server load never settled and at one point was 391.43 (of course we weren't loading at that) and the fact that it's still at 9.7 which delays post time by an irritating amount, I have decided to jump ship altogether.  I'll rebuild our site on a new host and put us into maintenance mode just before the hop, so don't be alarmed or surprised if you see this site offline.

Once you see the site out of maintenance mode, you'll know the DNS changes have fully propagated.

All this will happen sometime over the weekend.

Oddly, every time I log on the server is down and I have to kick them to reboot it - or terminate whatever is spiking the load.

New host has also started like an idiot so I'm wondering if it's time for us all to jump universe to a place where people are at least semi-professional. I know most of you probably already came from there, but some of us lesser mortals would like a holiday from all the incompetency around us.

Just archiving the site for the move and I noticed there was a file in the queue that was 1.3gb. There's nothing to do with the site structure anywhere near that size so I looked further into thinking maybe we'd been hacked or something and this was deposited.

We hadn't and this was just a simple server file - any ideas what it might be?

Sorry about your missing post, 8ully, but the site wasn't ready at that point.

It's been a nightmare to get this over to another server due to all the little alterations I've made over the years. It seemed to do something to the structure of the site whereby it couldn't be seen by the new server. I've had to update the version in a sandbox, reinstall most of the mods and then export this cleaner copy and updated DB over to this host.

So we are here now and it's way more stable than that other pile of junk. Take note though, not all the mods would install and things might be a bit out of place. I'll work on getting us back to full spec as and when I have time.

It's cool, I got all three of the error messages again in the meantime.

I still say that error log was load bearing. :P

Also, considering I can't say it with money, thank you for keeping this place up, it's a great resource to me, even when it's just venting when dinner doesn't go well, it's still a place I can do that. And it is appreciated.

To keep you all in the loop I should explain that while this new host is very fast and has excellent hardware to support our package, it is a little expensive so I made the decision to run a VPS instead where I will host my other sites (mostly static) and bounce this site over there too.

It will mean another little disruption and short break in service, but the upside is we will be the only real functioning dynamic site on the server which will make us bulletproof and faster than you can imagine.

There will also be other goodies for you all to benefit from.

Excellent. And thanks for having this place for all us to just sit and relax in. Let me know if you'd take some compensation to help out (and how best to get it to you).

Thanks for that but I'm now even using Cyberpanel which is an Open Source web host panel as I'm sure you know that CPanel started charging a packet to use it. This brings our hosting fees down to a few dollars a year and less if other people want me to host sites for them. Anywho, I now put it through as a business expense but thanks again for the offer.

You have my little boy to thank for this as he even offered to give me a VPS on his dedicated server (at £15 a year - he isn't that stupid). But I decided to get my own VPS so that I could keep it tidy and then just lean on the littlun to explain to me how it all works.

I am finally confident enough with my VPS and the control panel I've installed to consider moving us over once and for all. I can then get rid of our current host which, while being incredibly fast and stable, is expensive by normal standards.

If I self impose a break from work I'll try and get us over in the next few days and, as usual, you can expect a short break in service if not a few things being odd for a while (your timezone etc).

I'll keep you all posted.

We have a little persistent problem here which is due to SMF not coping with newer versions of PHP very well. It doesn't hurt much but it creates dozens of entries to the error log every time a page is loaded. This in turn bloats and then it becomes an issue.

I can't fix it without disabling the spoiler tag of all things so don't be alarmed if that disappears temporarily. Once it's fixed I'll bounce us over to the new space but I'll put us into maintenance mode beforehand. Once that happens you'll know when we have been fully propagated as we'll be out of the maintenance mode on the new server.

There was a short time for the propagation to complete (which was 2 days ago) although she would have been seeing either the old or the new site during that time. I have checked and we can be seen from everywhere so my guess is she needs to clear her cache and try again. She could check from her phone or another browser that hasn't visited the site before and see if she can see us. She should also try the secure address (https:// ...) as I am playing with the redirects  to make it automagically load the SSL address but it's problematic without CPanel.

I'll get one of the boy's techie people over your side of the pond to ping us and see if there's anything spooky going on.

Title: Re: Any and all site related problems

It's possible that her ISP has cached the nameservers to speed things up a bit and those are no longer valid. It's a long shot but if she can't clear it herself, that might come into play.

Aha! Great to see you here and that the site is firing well for you.

I should point out that as I now control the server, I do have to reboot it or some of the services from time to time. I usually check that we are clear here first, but in the unlikely event of bad timing and you do see a server failure, it should resolve in a few minutes.

Some issues being reported after converting the database and I wondered how far reaching they are? I personally don't have any issues although once logged out I do not see the recent posts as 6 doesn't. I thought that might have something to do with guest permissions but there does not appear to be anything I can tweak via SMF, and editing things manually is a bit hit and miss in that particualr case so I think it's worth living with it.

I can always reload the database before the chinese character issue was fixed if we have too many other glitches that spawn.

Goldie cannot see anything when logged in and I briefly logged in the the gamekeeper account which is essentially a dummy account, and I can see what he means as no posts at all are visible.

I am going to research a solution quickly but if nothing comes up I am going to reload the database before the chinese character fix. I'll warn you beforehand if you want to re-up any posts you've added since then.

As goldie and at least one other account cannot see threads, I'll have to assume there are many more as many members no longer log in. However, we really have a bit of a problem now as the only working database archive I have is from the end of April.

I think for what it's worth I'll try and get this DB working, but if not I really have to reload the April one as we can't leave goldie out in the cold.

I'll ask some of the big boys over on SMF and see if this error has some history to work from.

Nearly missed this.

It's a tough one to figure out. My hunch is that it is to do with a mod I installed some time ago that stops a PHP error. This is due to SMF finding it hard to handle anything from 7.2 upwards. I can't easily uninstall it as it was manually coded in because of version mismatches.

I'll sandbox an archive and see if I can iron things out and them copy it back.

If you log into the gamekeeper account you'll see goldie's problem.

Ah, I see now. Using the F12 Developer Tools, the code isn't even getting rendered for the Post Subjects (on this page or even on the individual posts of a thread.

Like you, I never log out so did notice anything was a miss. I'm sure that bit of info is probably crucial (fine if already logged in, problem occurs for new users...I wonder if it's a file permission issue).

Ok, the young-un and I have managed to get version of the database from yesterday and getting it fully working - including fixing the little error that 6 reported. The problem is it required uninstalling all the mods and some other stuff so we are going to try and recreate the process without doing that.

It was actually a combination of a few things but, in truth, when the boy read your post about file permissions (which, in part, it certainly was) it all fell into place for him.

The DB was also in quite bad shape and couldn't be downloaded/archived. It has now been rebuilt and the boy set a script up to archive it daily - eventually to his drives to save on space.

Browsers have been doing a lot lately to tighten up on SSL/HTTPS certificates. It might have been something like that and the update resolved it. Secured communications are very sensitive and any number of things can cause issues (system time being off a little, not being able to check the cert revocation list to validate a good cert, etc).

Glad it resolved for you. It is odd that both you and 6 were experiencing issues at around the same time though. Maybe smokester or TNG were doing some system maintenance at the time (though smokester would normally give a heads up).
Title: Re: Any and all site related problems

"Let's Encrypt" SSL expired and for some reason newly generated ones wouldn't stick. TNG did this one manually but after the VPS reboot the issue seems to be resolved.

TNG can be quite useful sometimes.
