I was surprised that the fact that the weather wasn't really that bad today but when I came home, my power was out.

Hearsay is that it had nothing to do with the storm but AEP saw the storm as a good opportunity to take the power down to do junction upgrades....Meh.

For once we gave away all the Halloween candy.  We usually get stuck with a bunch and have to give it away at work.  Even though it was raining, we had tons of trick or treaters.  That was fun.

I was surprised there was filming yet again on Clapham common. I wouldn't mind but they use the cafe to store all the cameras and audio gear, which takes up about 6 tables that then cannot be used by customers.

The show is called "Date me date my dog" which is apparently on Sky Living, so it is not even a show that interests me.

Antonio was telling me that they'd run up a bill of about £300 so the boss allowed it (the forecast was for it to rain today so it could have been useful).  In my opinion though, they probably lost another £500 in missed sales.

There seems to be a Facebook page about the show (which I can't access as I have no Facebook account), but I have no idea when it is to be screened.  It might be airing already.

I was surprised how upset I was today when my microwave of 25 years packed up.  I'd had it so long it sort of symbolised immortality.  Now it's broke, anything can.

smokester, congratulations on your microwave longevity.  We have an old clunker that we inherited 12 years ago from its second owner.  It's still faithfully heating coffee and the occasional frozen meal.

I still miss it to be perfectly honest.  The new one I bought is functionally equal to the old Panasonic, and remarkably, doesn't look that dissimilar. The problems is though that the new jobbie beeps so flippin' loudly that it's like an alarm clock going off.  Hot chocolate late at night tends to wake up the children.  And the neighbours.

It's a little different now.  I guess it's seen as sutler, may be the only difference.  That, and the fact that I care now.  I never cared before, not really.  I romanticized so much, that when things like that happened it had the same effect as any other problem in my life, no matter now hard the problem.  Now, it's the small things that eat away at me.  I understand the larger pictures that I cannot change, responsibilities I accept.

Thanks you two.  I don't know.  Most of the problem is the fact that I just don't push to be recognized.  I just let people fade when they don't agree with me.  It's not who I am, but I can't keep letting people run the way I feel.

My son looked out into the garden this morning while eating his breakfast and sighed "I hope it snows today".  He then turned back to put his toast down and pick up his drink, and when he turned back, it was snowing.

The missus said we should get him to say/sigh: "I hope my folks win the lottery"...

We have a mouse in the house!! In the 14 yrs I've been living here it's the 1st time. Last night I was sitting on my laptop in the dining room when I heard a loud "clang". I watched in the general direction of the noise and saw it for a second on the kitchen countertop and then it was gone behind the stove. Clumsy little thing bumped my two wooden pepper mills (not one but both of them). Geez, one of them is at least 40 cm long.  ::)
I won't be as nice as the soldier in mishca's post. Sorry buddy but this is my turf!

I love to rewire lamps.  This funny woman gave a speech in our high school speech class on how to do this and shortly afterwards, I began finding neat old lamps at garage sales and fixing them.  Every lamp in my house is some kind of rescue or eBay special.

Sorry, I thought I saw a photo of you with a collegiate sweatshirt so I thought you had been a student.  Bagel place is as good as any other, but maybe you can take a course or two so you can have some better options down the road.  Bagels are good.  I like pumpernickel and onion bialys, but I doubt they sell bialys in Milwaukee.

I was knee deep in poo, yes, real poo last night as one of my client's waste pipe got blocked.  I couldn't clear it and now Dyno-rod have told me there's a clay bung stuck halfway down.  Now I have to cut through a solid oak floor just so they can get down and excavate.

They paid £975,000 3 months ago for this place and took out a drain survey beforehand.  The survey apparently didn't pick out the obstruction.

£975,000 to have to crap in a bucket for 2 days.  That surely is a surprise.

Today Virgin sent me a cheque for £210. YIPPEE!!

Mentioning the use of incorrect images for hotels they advertised in newspaper supplements (out of courtesy of course), seems to really help a complaint along its way.

A conversation I had with my daughter:

Daughter: Mom, sometimes I think your mean and sometimes I think you're the best mom in the world.

Me: Really? And when do you think I'm the best mom in the world?

Daughter: Mmmnn... Every 2 months... For about 5 mins.

I laughed. It wasn't funny though.

It's a play on automobile terms.  Don't they have coupes and sedans in Britain?  Do you mean you call them coup-ays instead of coops?

dog fight at the park today between  two pitbulls. one wanted to play and the other one wanted to fight. the guy had to beat the other pit until she let go of his dog.

and then later another guy walking his pit off the leash let his dog run over to our dog group which is a group of small dogs. his dog wouldn't listen when he called her, she didn't seem aggressive but i know if a dog senses your scared or nervous , it can cause them to strike. I know not all pitbulls are bad and that any dog can attack for any reason, they are just animals. it just sucked. I'm not sure what I would do if another dog attacked mine. I  think me and my dog will be taking a little break from the park for a while.

Oh crap! Where Im from the aggressive dog and its owner would be extracted from the program if that happened. Here, dog parks are "members only" type places so that things like that can be tracked and corrected when necessary. VERY scary. Our last, and still alive in my heart, German Shepherd was a very loveable animal and on a walk once another shepherd got her by the neck and pinned her to the ground. I kicked the poo out of that dog. Only in hind site did I think, "what the hell did you just do?!?" Lol. Wont even elaborate on the story from that point but needless to say no one gave a poo what just happened even though they stood around and watched and didnt so much as lift a finger to help. Blood pressures going up.......... The End.

in nyc not all parks have dog runs but all of them have off leash hours. I'm working on trying to get two dog runs in the park now. anyways it was off leash hours and the guys pit that attacked was on a leash, she isn't friendly and the pit that wasn't on the leash just wanted to play. I believe the guy with the dog on the leash told the guy to grab his dog but he didn't. his dog really should be muzzled. I don't think you did anything wrong by kicking that dog, you have to protect your family member. theres a guy that walks his dog in the park and his dog was attacked by pitbull and now he carries a stick with him whenever he walks his dog.

When I was three, my mother's parents had a German Shepherd which used to scare me (because it was a dog).  It used to chase me a lot, maybe because I used to run away from it every time it came near me, and everyone used to laugh at me.  I tried to tell them it was a game we played, but I don't think anybody believed me. :(

The new cat that I found went to the bathroom in the little box I set up in the bathroom.  But not the one with the torn shreds of newspaper I took time shredding, the one with the body pillow that I made for him to bed in... I made him sleep in there last night.  He did alright after an hour and I could finally fall asleep when he stopped crying.  I got him out first thing when I woke up and he didn't seemed fazed and had slept in the box.  Either way the litter box is in tact and he is eating well, looks very clean, I am just waiting on a poop now.  I've checked his rear, ears, and his body for whatever what have you, and he seems clean.  He's very good with the kids.  I named him Tomanthus Peter.  But we will call him Peter.

This wasn't today, but I skipped breakfast yesterday and I'm just useless when that happens.

Yesterday, on my way home from the shops, I noticed a lady, about 15 metres away, wearing one of those thin material dresses with lots of colourful patterns walking towards me.  Maybe it was a floral pattern, I'm not entirely sure because her boob had fallen out and she didn't seem to care!  :o

What was she doing?!  Why would anyone would walk around flaunting their boob like that outside a protest!?  This was a busy High street after 1pm, it was full of people.  A couple of teenage girls behind me screamed when they saw her!  At least I think they did, I was listening to some gross(?) beats with my earphones.  A lot of the people around me were just staring at her (and blocking my path >:().  It's kind of funny how much space they were giving her.

Eventually, maybe 10 seconds later, she gave in and put it away.  But it was too late, I had already lost my innocence.

When she was about a couple metres behind me, it occurred to me that she probably didn't mean for her boob to fall out.  Judging by the jiggle, I think she was dance-walking/walk-dancing(?), and although I'm certain she wasn't wearing earphones, I've decided she had earphones on but didn't notice because her boob had fallen out.  Then I felt bad because everyone had seen her boob and she probably hadn't done her shopping yet.  She'll be walking up and down, buying what she needs to buy, knowing that at least 20 people and the CCTV men have seen her boob   (awkward!). :'(

It wasn't a bad boob, it was perky enough and had a decent sized nipple.  I think it was the way she was walking around with a boob all out and not really seeming to care.  At the time it was incredibly shocking.

Nah, those girls were just wild beasts! Not their fault of course. Even when they were imposed on me (the 1st one was a gift to my sister from a boyfriend ::) ::)) I loved them and took care of them. In the city they were confined to the back yard, which looked like nuclear test ground during those days. In the country they used to bring snakes, frogs, birds, chickens. A neighbor very calmly informed us he was going to shoot the dog if he found it in his farm again. They could climb different kinds of fences. They once unburied part of a horse. They preferred to eat anything found or hunted by them rather than anything else. They came back from those "forays" smelling and looking pretty bad. In a few hours they were perfect again. They kind of self-cleaned somehow. It was amazing.

If I have children, I may get a pet.  They arr meant to be good for them.  Me alone, I might accidentally kill it.

Once, when I had a hamster, I thought it'd be fun for it to run around my room.  Whilz I was watching da telly, it managed to find a carrier bag and started to stuff it into it's cheek.  I think it managed about three quarters of the bag before I noticed it and pulled it out.  It then stared at me with this face :(.  He was a good hamster.

The weather really caught me off guard today.  My phone app had said it was 13c all week but today it was so hot is was setting the tile adhesive I was using in half the time.

Wasted two 20kg bags as it set in the tub in 15 minutes.

My son's SAT result for math was in the top 1% of the country. His school is now saying he can do GCSE in math 2 years early, possibly A-level math in year 11, and advance modules when he reaches 6th form.

It's all about "finance" here in the U.K. It truly is disgusting.

However, a friend has promised him an internship in that field so he has a chance of owning his own property sometime in the future. He could always be a philanthropic banker (that's surely an oxymoron).

No wonder I couldn't find this post. I misspelled "Olympiads".

My daughter passed the Regional stage and now she will go to the Nationals!!!! Only about 30 kids in her age level in the whole country. WOW. I'm so proud.
Let me rant about something related to that. I'll start telling the Nationals is a 3 days event in Mar del Plata in late October (spring here) so you understand.
When my kid competed in an earlier stage I spoke to the vice-director about registration and accomodation arrangements (that exam was held in another city). One day I knocked on their door and the vice-director wasn't in. When I tried to tell the director why I was there she stopped me (quite coldly, I must say, and she didn't even let me cross the door) and explained she didn't have anything to do with the Math Olympics or the organization or whatever. Pretty much "don't bother me and get the golly out". But I didn't think twice about that. Until the day the vice-director told me my daughter has passed the exam and "Carmen might want to go to Mar del Plata". OMG, I saw red. Of course she wants to go! She thinks she can have it both ways. I feel like flamethrow (is that a word?) that woman's bureaucratic ass. And do you know who prepared my daughter for her exams: A teacher paid by a non-profit organization and myself. Mostly myself. Un-bless'ed believable. If I find out she intends someone paying for her trip I'm going to go berserk.
Sorry for the rant. I feel a bit better now.  :D

The sentiment of your rant carried though very clearly even without the throwing of flames - and I sympathise entirely.

The bottom line is that your daughter has achieved an incredible standard which cannot be taken away from her by anyone. The fact that the VP has been pretty unsupportive until it suited her only exposes the measure of the woman.

You would have thought her position would be one that required some level respect that she evidently does not command, well, at least not by me.

That aside: congrats to your daughter and onwards and upwards!!!

It's nice to see what loving parents can achieve in nurturing successful children.

Today one of the neighborhood cats decided to play while I was cutting the lavender.  She started striking at the plants with her paws.  I finally got a small branch from a bush I'd trimmed and snaked it along the ground.  She was jumping and pawing at it like cats do.  She's so funny.  Everyone in the neighborhood knows and loves her.  She wears a bell so you can hear her coming.

I met a cat today in the house I'm currently working in. She got a bit of a shock when I let myself in and entered the living room as I think she expected her owner. We had a cuddle anyhow.

A few hours later I went back in to get some tools and she did the whole snaking through the legs a meowing loudly thing. This was done inches away from her empty food and water bowl. I got the message and she's fatter now.

I think I got manipulated.

I think you should not worry about it until you have reason to be worried.  You appear to have been living clean and reasonably, pose no danger to yourself or others, so I can't imagine there would be any change other than perhaps a suggestion that they alter any medications you are currently taking.

It's probably due to some bureaucratic deadline or requirements and maybe somebody forgot to fill out some paperwork and is in hot water for not filing it sooner.

My doctor overrode the policies and had me talk to the therapist. He stated the same thing he says every time, that I have to remain compliant.

I will remain compliant, but I no longer have hope.

I thought you had had a run in with the law re public drunkenness or some such.  Maybe you can elaborate, if not here, then via pm.  This seems excessively interventionist for one incident.

Oh.  And I regularly scramble eggs for lunch.  Today, one of the two eggs had a double yolk.  If fertilized, it would have meant twin chickens!  I feel lucky, I guess, as it seemed like a good omen.

That sucks.  Are Harleys popular in the UK?

It wasn't a Harley, just a "beast" in general.

Harleys aren't very popular in the u.k as it's not really a touring place. It's all about speedy Japanese bikes.

That said, if I were to consider a long road trip in the States, I'd much prefer a Harley over a racing bike.

I don't think I ever lasted more than 10 minutes at over 100 MPH on my Harley Sportster. Helmet tries to lift, bugs hurt, crosswinds make it hairy. Wouldn't want a crotch rocket.

A full face Arai would solve most of that.  "bikers' balls" you have to develop over time, and pushing it up to 130 should negate the crosswind.

When chris called it a Hawg, I assumed it was a Harley, as that's what a hog is in the U.S.  There are even images on google that would lead to that confusion, although there are also Yamahas that fit the same description (Thunderace).

How much my left hand surgery hurts compared to the right.  The surgeon did say the ligament was unusually thick and he had to cut quite deep to release the nerve.

It's still too sore to hold a beer bottle.

You can actually drink from a beer bottle without using your hands - hold it in your teeth. It takes a bit of practice, but you can get used to it.

This is not advisable with extensive bridgework.

You could always levitate it for me. While you're at it you could also make it everlasting.

Not the best kind of surprises.

Another surprise and perhaps some good karma for my grand gesture with the flights, is that the police found my bike yesterday!!

It was about 300yds from where I live and hotwired.  The thing is that because of my surgery a month before, it had been sitting idle and the battery tends to run down due to it's digital clocks. My guess is it wouldn't fire up so they just abandoned where it stood.

It's still going to cost a few quid to redo the wiring, but getting it back has saved me at least £1200 in the long run.

Motorcycle and bicycle theft is rife in London at the moment. This issue is made worse (although I kind of agree with the decision) with the recent Metropolitan Police blanket policy of "no pursuit" in cases of 2 wheeled theft.  I could steal your pushbike from under you while the police were watching, and as long as I mounted it and started to ride, they have to let me escape.

This policy is because a chase could result in injury or death of the perpetrator of the crime.

So bike theft has been legalized?

Meanwhile, in the US, police unions are trying to make it legal for officers to turn off body cams. Officers also seem confused when pistol rounds fail to stop 3 ton vehicles.
Title: Re: what surprised you today...
Post by: smokester on January 22, 2016, 03:35:05 PM
So bike theft has been legalized?

Pretty much as the criminal element are fully aware of this new policy.  It does only apply to the Met' police force.  Out in the counties they can still pursue.

The officer who called me and then very kindly waited by my bike so I could bring my chain down and secure it (I couldn't push it home as it's 1000cc and I have dodgy hands from the surgery), told me that now when they do catch motorcycle thieves -- who are invariably young teenagers -- the courts send them on mechanic courses as they want to nurture their interest in engines etc.  The result is they learn how to hotwire, bypass immobilisers, and strip the vehicles down easily to sell on the parts.

Sigh....

My dad drove a truck for a livin'. I've done a moving job or two in the driver's seat of a civilian version of a moving truck, and spent even more time locked in the back of one, and honestly, I don't get it either. They park in the perfect location for a bless'ed collision. Here in the US, the parks system used to have rest stops running up California. The east coast has very different roads, and more built up off ramp locations. Sadly, many of the California rest stops have been torn out. I had to iron bladder the last six of a 24 hour drive, and I was a bless'ed idiot to drive that long straight, but the lift gate was busted and would not latch. I also had my bank card shut off in the bless'ed Mojave on the 4th of July trip, but that is a whole nother story.

This is an uncivilized country, so backwards, especially in the context of most other industrialized nations.  That you should live in fear of not being able to get access to a doctor or a hospital should you become sick when this country is one of the wealthiest on earth is a shameful situation.  That it's filled with ignorant people who would vote against their own interests so that the current administration will do all in its power to throw the poor and disadvantaged to the dogs is just another thing to sigh about.  What to do?  I have few answers.  I march in the streets and a fat lot of good it does, although it makes for good tv and interesting press.

The idea of no social healthcare frightens the life out of me (no pun intended).  I recently had a couple of health scares that I had assessed at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital and I was treated so well, thoroughly and efficiently, that I commented that private healthcare could not have competed with their service.

Mind you, St George's hospital in Tooting where I usually go is just pants.

For those that wonder, I used to pay $40 a pop for clinic visits if I had a condition that kept me from work. California is an "at will" employment state, so if you piss off the scheduling manager, you can kiss your ass goodbye.

So if an eye swelled shut, or an airway closed, $40.

Oh, and they are not nice about it. If you've got two issues, you're poo out of luck, they'll hear one.

Then medication bleeds your bank account.

So medi-cal was a bless'ed godsend. Flash the card, see the doc, collect the meds. I even felt bad about it, because of the expense.

Today might be my last doctors visit. I didn't sleep, obviously.

Obama care certainly shaked things up and wasn't initially received well.  Understood.  For many, it was another added expense that was hitting their already bruised and beaten wallet.  But again for many, and for a large percentage, the initial detractors, it turned out to be a good thing and now that they've had a taste, taking it away, IMO, is going to leave the US in a worse spot then it started at.  Not to mention a waste of the funds used to start it added with the funds used to shutter it.

Was Obama Care implemented in the best way possible?  Probably not, but it was a foot in the door that if the Trump wasn't so dead set to close, could allow us to continue to build on and improve it.  I think the next step should be not to close it but to do a re-audit of the medical procedures.  The cost for many of the medical procedures are still based on the original analysis by the insurance companies from decades ago.  An operation that currently costs several hundred thousand dollars now realistically costs a small percentage of that thanks to advances in medical technology and research.  Yet the price is still being set by the analysis from years ago.

I respect doctors and the training they go through to help people live better and think they should get paid what they deserve but I don't want the insurance companies bilking the people just because they can (it sort of reminds me of record producers, giving the musicians a drop while they take the whole ocean).

Before the ACA, our health insurance premiums were more expensive than our mortgage.  Without help from the government, our insurance premiums, for two adults, were $1500/month, or $18k/year.  The ACA allowed us to pay $500, but then it was to go up to $800, but we were able to switch to a less expensive plan.  We live in fear of what the Trump administration will do to our living expenses, if the subsidy goes away.  We are both self employed so we have to purchase insurance on the marketplace.

People who have employer-provided health insurance have no idea what the rest of us deal with.  And it's not like we have an option when a single visit to the emergency room can run into the thousands of dollars.  What was amazing was how expensive the "retail" price of care was versus the price that was billed to the insurance company on our billing statements.  There would be the retail price for the procedure, then the "allowable amount" that the insurance company would pay (which the provider had to reduce their charge to) then the insured's "copay" responsibility.  It's really astonishing how these middlemen (insurers) cause an inflation in the medical fees.

When I was a college student in a small town, you could go see a doctor and pay for the visit.  It wasn't something that would break the bank.  Now it's nuts.  You can't really pay for doctor visits as a private citizen unless you are very wealthy.   The idea of not having health insurance is just not feasible.

I managed to cobble together a stargate collection from resale shops, I'm missing the film "ark of truth" and have yet to find dvd copies of atlantis.

I did find breaking bad season 2 today.

Sleep is poo. I called the county to try and fix my healthcare issue. They said they got my updated info packet and that I need to wait.

Good news is I had a follow up appointment with the doc. Most of it looks good, and he rammed through a fill order for my meds. Last visit he was woried that my condition had adapted to the meds.thankfully that isn't so.

Bad news is it didn't include refills, so I've got a month to fix my problem or, as a randite would prefer, croak.

It's funny, one pill a day seems like the smallest thing in the world, until it extends to your death.

Gods know the current pharmaceutical industry will never cure anything again. Like Chris Rock said, they're probably still pissed they can't sell a "treatment" for polio.

Iceland (the frozen food shop) really surprised me today. I hadn't been there for a while and didn't realise is had gone posh.

It had posh prices too, which really confused me.

Even the staff had had an upgrade (uniforms that is).

I quite like Malcolm Walker as he seems to have always repaid his staff for the loyalty and endeavours.  I remember this gesture a few years ago (not the HMRC decision) that impressed me:

what surprises me more is the fact a politician who ran for office has actually actioned his promises  :o has caused more protests than the majority who don't  ???

Anyway off the subject of politics.
Today I was surprised I made it out of bed as I ripped all my muscles in the lower right hand side of my back yesterday at work.
Had a heated argument with HR manager at work who said, as I had seen the training video it was my fault.
Mmmmmmmmm this riled me and I stated that we had no risk assessment folder in the area no weights of parts we have to life, no lifting tackle, parts arrive on wrong trolley wheels/in wrong boxes.
But what got me going the most was he statement that "this happens on a regular basis in the area I work in"
So my retort was simple "Why hasn't the management then actioned a full risk assessment and acted accordingly"

I was then asked to leave the top office.
He came to see me later and apologised as he could see that all I had stated was correct and that a Manager had lied to him stating" he had fully done risk assessments and made available in the work area)

I even (thank you my work mate) had to get a lift home as I was on my bike.
I now await the chaos that will ensue at the back to work interview and the Riddor that will follow ,especially as i cannot even put my socks on so doubtful I will go to work for a while  :-\

sorry about the long "get it off my chest post" :)

The "demos" voted overwhelmingly for his opponent.  An arcane law that was intended to mollify slaveowners resulted in his obtaining the position despite the 3 million Americans who expressed a preference for Hillary Clinton who threw the popular plebescite in her favor.

His obliviousness to that fact, to the many Americans who didn't vote for him, and his disregard for the fact that the position of President is not like Emperor or CEO of a private corporation, is more likely than not, going to result in his removal from office when the GOP dominated legislature determines that he has outlived his usefulness.  He is an international embarrassment and I'm ashamed to have to explain that I didn't vote for him to my friends abroad.

Well, the bit of the demos that voted did.

Democracy really doesn't work, to be honest, and someone that is determined (let's call this type of person a "politician") can subvert it to their own ends regardless of safeguards. However you decide it works, someone can figure out a way around it.

Fundamentally my issue with it has always been if 51% of the population want to victimise/ kill/ enslave the other 49%, then it is democratic for them so to do. Democracy can be really unpleasant for the loser.

... although, as Churchill said, all other forms of government are worse.

Sadly, I agree with you about democracy, which can be mob rule in its worst forms.  What is weird about the US is the systematic way the Legislative body has subverted the drawing of legislative districts so that, while the majority of the voting populace is Democratic, the other party manages to gain the majority in both houses.  A key decision is before the Supreme Court that may end this practice.

Trump, again, seems to not understand that being the executive of a company that you set up and run is not the same thing as being an elected public official.  Governance is hard work and complex in that you must constantly work to push through your agenda in a matrix of power relationships that have little to no resemblance to the structures in the private sector.  I think he has no experience, is at a loss, and is essentially working as a puppet of those who are more experienced and practiced at such machinations.  Restricting people's access to health care is hardly the work of a conservative or libertarian.  It's the agency of a man who holds women to be second rate citizens.  Restricting freedom of speech and the press is not conservative, or libertarian, it's the action of someone who is uncomfortable with criticism.  And the absurd, throw the baby out with the bathwater approach to restrictions on immigration, was done in such a haphazard half assed way, that it's basically been gutted through multiple injunctions and legal challenges.  With Trump, it's truly Amateur Hour in the White House.  If only this were like the Apprentice and we could say, "You're Fired," when we had our noses full of his incompetence.

I'm in a resisting while waiting for the inevitable state, based on the old "give em enough rope," philosophy.  My husband and I have bets on how long it will be before he manages to be impeached.
Title: Re: what surprised you today...
Post by: 6pairsofshoes on February 06, 2017, 01:09:57 PM
You won't be able to impeach him if he disbands the Judiciary.

I don't think that the bulk of the US citizenry has quite come to terms with the power that you have given your President if he has the will to use it. e.g. His remarks about the judge that had the cheek to stand up to him - "so-called judge" indeed - have the power to discredit that judge, and when he turns his twitter feed onto something, it gets torched, because ...

.. lest ye forget, he still has millions of supporters that love what he is doing.

(Thought experiment: What would you do if he actually did throw Hilary into jail? It is about the only election promise that he hasn't yet followed through on)

PS - sometimes I miss folk like GW for conversations of this nature.

I've been royally pissed off that he did not follow through on his promise to throw Hillary in jail.  Why?  Because it was BS from the start and I wanted him exposed for what he is, a liar, a bully and a cheat.  I also expect that we'll all be enjoying a nice ice skating party in hell before he releases his tax returns.

The trouble is that someone noticed (lets call him "The Founding Fathers", as a non-emotive neutral name for him) the potential existence of the tyranny of the majority (51% wants, 51% gets) and decided to try to ensure that this couldn't easily occur. He was as guilty of gerrymandering as any of his successors..

A lot of smaht folks came along after him, and co-opted variations of his ideas to ensure that their opponents couldn't easily win, but if used correctly it more nearly ensures fairness. In the text that you linked you don't really need the exotic example at the end, the initial two divisions illustrate the point exactly - if "fairness" is your aim, then "fairness" is pretty achievable, but you need to know who is red and who is blue, and where they live - that whole infographic fails when you don't KNOW the split.

The fact is that there is no "fair" way of representing a diverse group of people, so all pretence of "fairness" is discarded, and instead we choose representatives, and they lie, cheat, wheedle, steal, connive and confuse in order to get their own way because they must win

If we are charitable (let's not deal with the possibility of self-serving "politicians", as they just muddy the water - let's assume that they are all selfless altruists), we could say that each of them want to win because they truly believe that they are the best hope for humanity, and thus any means of getting them into power is fair, as the result of them winning is that humanity is "saved™" (or if - heaven forfend - they lose, then the world is doomed to eternal hellfire and ashes). The trouble is that some - if not all - of them are mistaken, and the ends don't justify the means. This is a hard pill to swallow, and to be honest I don't ever recall a single politician that understood this. The nearest I have seen is people that failed because they couldn't quite wrangle the last ounce of power from the system, and they were finally defeated by the intransigent (and by definition "wrong") opposition.

Gerrymandering is just one of the tools used by these self-believing folk to ensure that the world has the chance to be saved by them.

Interestingly I think that your current President seems to honestly believe that he knows the makeup of the country - on the one hand there are people that like him, understand him, and believe in him (good guys), and on the other hand there are crooks, illegals, democrats, the liberal media and other folk that don't have the best interests of the country at heart (bad guys). He apparently sees it as his duty to root out and expel/ imprison/ ridicule/ destroy everyone in the second category. This is as near a perfect example of the tyranny of the majority as one could hope to see, and I honestly think that he will do everything in his power to trample anyone that he sees as being a bad guy.

Incidentally I don't think that he is "controlled" in the same way the previous Republican President was.

There is no question in my mind that you are correct in your assessment of Trump's fervent belief in his rectitude and the "vast majority" that wants him to "drain the swamp" etc.  The problem lies in two areas:  one, in the delusions of grandeur of a con-man whose very success lies in his belief in his own overinflated successes and abilities, two, in the fact that he really seems to be bored and uninterested in the actual business of horsetrading that real governance actually requires.  Instead, he has surrounded himself with people who are either sycophantic spin doctors or those with such a radically right agenda that he feels he can turn over the tedious aspects of his job (drafting Executive orders, dealing with members of the legislative branch, etc.) to those reliable others.  I suspect he ran his real estate empire and its related subsidiaries in the same way.

I have never believed him to be either original or especially successful as a real estate developer (and the history of this field is one area of my own professional interest, so I've long known and followed his activities in this area).  I don't see much original in his Presidential agenda or actions either.  I read policy positions offered on his website when he was running, and while I was somewhat cheered by reading his plans to revamp America's crumbling infrastructure, it, like much GOP agenda, depended for funding, not on tax revenues, but on a trickle down based economy where of course all the enlightened capitalists in  our country would create masses of jobs and products, goods and services to enable a boom that would result in new monies trickling down to the masses.

I've heard this song and dance a million times and have seen it come crashing down around our ears more times than I can count.  It's sad when I long for the days when Republicans saw the virtue of projects like building a national highway system and those who benefitted the most from the system were expected to give back a reasonable portion of their gains to keep it going.  Now it's like we've devolved into a Hobbesian state of nature.  It kind of reminds me of lines of people waiting for the bus in Athens, when I was traveling in Greece.  I was amazed as I saw big strong men shoving little old ladies aside so they could get on first.  That's the America I live in under Donald Trump, and it makes me sad to no end.

These days you can't even buy 2 packets of paracetamol from the same shop.  However, there are about 20 shops within a mile radius of where I live that sell paracetamol.

I'm sure things have changed a bit in the last few years.

Paracetamol is acetaminophen, aka Tylenol.  It upsets my stomach and is known to cause liver damage in large doses.  I don't take it, but you can get it readily here.  Why is it restricted in the UK?

I'm dull.  I prefer aspirin.  Some people can't take it because of associated stomach bleeding.  I chew it before swallowing, but I don't mind the flavor, so I suspect that helps.  It isn't given to babies or small children because of the potential danger of Rye's syndrome.

As for not being able to sleep?  I just get up and read, drink herbal tea, and go back to bed when I am tired.

I think it's to do with overdosing as people have a tendency to do so.

Frankly, I don't get it. If you think you need shitloads to cure your pain you'll just go to 2 or 3 shops to buy what you require. You can even buy it in corner shops and Poundland, so it's hardly given the impression of being dangerous.

Cigarettes on the other hand have death on their packets but you can buy as much as you can afford.

Stupid world.

That's amazing.  You can go into any drug store and buy generic acetaminophen in large bottles of 100-200 tablets anytime you like.  No prescription or restrictions.  There's dispensing info on the back label that tells patients not to take more than the recommended dose, but that's about it.

yucky,
The prescription co codamol is 30% codeine and pretty good for pain relief  :) trouble it and naproxen i took gave you chronic constipation, so you then have to take fybogel to stop this and on it goes so the drugs dont make you worse than the original complaint.

Uusure why the UK is more paracetamol orientated than aspirin ??

That's interesting.  Here, you have to sign in with a chemist to buy Sudafed and I'm pretty sure there are restrictions of 2 packages.

Goldie, I know constipation can be caused by opiates, including codeine, but I had no idea naproxen caused it also.  I am convinced that my father's death was due to naproxen.  He had terrible pain from arthritis and practically lived on the stuff.  A few  years after his sudden death in his early 70's, I discovered that this drug was associated with heart failure.  I'm convinced that this led to his heart attack and sudden death.

The caretaker at my daughter's school, who also happens to be somewhat of a giant, has to take Naproxen daily. He was telling me that unless he takes it with food and follows some other essential routines, it plays havoc with him giving all sorts of side-effects.

He took the same prescription as me and you'd think a Brian Shaw lookalike would be able to absorb the medicine more easily.

It seems that Naproxen is indiscriminating.

I wouldn't take it again.  Allergies are weird.  You can develop them at any time.  The more you are exposed to the allergen, the worse the attacks become.   So it sounds like you developed an intolerance to naproxen (and NSAIDs).  Here's a link to Mayoclinic's site, which is reasonably trustworthy.  http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/drug-allergy/expert-answers/aspirin-allergy/faq-20058225 (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/drug-allergy/expert-answers/aspirin-allergy/faq-20058225)

Lost my wallet on Friday, lost the charger to my Canon camera yesterday (well, probably ages ago but it was only yesterday I looked for it) and today I can't find my digital tape measure.

Found nothing of any use while looking for these things, unless I suddenly find a use for hair grips and dust.

This is a thing I am weird about. I use belkin power strips. They don't run off a ups or anything fancy, but they are each insured for 25k. I've heard it's a madam to redeem, but that lawyers can get you the money. I even keep the stupid upc packaging card to prove I bought em.

That being said, do you have homeowners/renters insurance? Do you have a list of serial numbers?

It appears that the surge (if it was a surge) is more widespread than I originally thought. The Sky box hardly works at all and is not just the HDMI out facility. There are other appliances acting odd too, like our extractor fan in the kitchen.

We are insured but in all honesty it's probably cheaper to just but new items and keep the premium low.  The Sky box is an old one as we have the new version in out living room (and I really want to switch to Sky Q anywho), the Dyson animal charger seems faulty now but the vacuum is ok and other bits and bobs might calm down after a while.

It's all very odd, tho'.

I think if I was in an area prone to electrical storms I'd install a "Whole House Surge Protector", and I probably should anyway since there are other reasons why surges may occur. I think about $200USD by the time you add the 50 amp double pole breaker to the panel.

It's the first time I've ever encountered it personally and I don't own my property so I'm limited to what I can do.

I think I'll have run the gauntlet.
