From what I can tell, the changes necessary for established programs to adapt to Windows 8 have to do with aesthetics or touch screen compatibility. None of them seem to be about kb/m desktop functionality.

That's true.  In fact, I find layout and menu changes quite annoying in new versions of software, as they require you to relearn parts of the navigation.  I'm probably better sticking with what I already have.

A lot of people poo-poo it right away because it doesn't have a start screen.  Don't let that put you off.  A couple tips, Winkey+X is your bestest friend.  If you must have a start menu, there are several add-ons you can get.  ClassicShell is a free one that I use and love.  Start8 is a $5 program from Stardock (a la Windows Blinds, i.e., a well established company).  Both have gotten really good reviews.

Perhaps you should start a Win 8 thread in computing, and use it for helpful advice like the above.  OC seems to be ahead of the game too, so you'd have female company... at last :)

That's a great idea.  I'll try to get a post up with some stuff sometime tonight or tomorrow after I've had time to organize.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22439496 interesting

That's pretty much what I thought of Windows 8 when I saw it.  It looked to much like my phone, or at least the way I navigate on my phone, and I don't particularly like that either (I much preferred Windows Mobile on a Pocket PC).

I'm not writing it off as I preferred XP once I'd taken the plunge, and the same with Win 7 once I'd left my Luddite attitude behind.  I'm hoping Win 8 will be the same, and dweez is about half to convincing me already.

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Samsung.  I managed to get it for £648 from laptopsdirect which is £30 cheaper than Dabs.

Enough left for a beer and a pizza then..

I'm a bit weird.  When I receive something new I have to look at the unopened box for a couple of days until it feels like the right time to open it.  I figure if I open it when I don't have enough time to fully examine it, I won't feel like it's truly arrived.

Little minds, hobgoblins, and all that..

No way! I'd tear it open like a five year old at Xmas and play with it 'til it breaks an hour later!

Congrats on the purchase smokes.  I understand your attitude toward packages.  I personally can't do it, but I understand it.

I completely agree. It's a foreplay of sorts. It's better if you don't rush it.
