Windows 8 may look really nice and work really well, but this whole UEFI and Secure boot poo means that it has to go. WTF were/are Microsoft playing at? If they had their way, Windows 8 pre-installed machines would even lock out Linux.

I like it, but I will not be a party to it. Win 8 has to be nuked and Secure boot disabled.

I was thinking of jacking the SATA in favour of a SSD.  They are about the same in price now and I believe modern versions have longer lifespans.

This way I could keep the original disk with Win 8 and play around with Win 7 on an SSD that would boot in seconds.

excellent idea, I still have my original W7 hdd for my laptop somewhere.
Installed a hybrid hdd and away you go

Microsoft sucks for locking out other operating systems on Windows 8 machines. I'll never buy one. All the more reason to build your own.

Ubuntu found a way around the Windows 8 restriction

Yeah, I'll install Windows 9 Preview on one of my hard drives but I bet new machines with it installed will still have SecureBoot and you won't be able to install other operating systems. Ubuntu does have a work around for dual booting with Windows 8. I'll build a computer before buying one of those monopoly machines.

I didn't know it did that. The one thing that I did notice is that when I installed Win 8 to dual boot with Win 7, it disabled the Win 7 authorization patch I was using. It was easy enough to fix, but it seems their anti-piracy efforts are now backward compatible.

I didn't know that all other OSes are locked out, though.

I think you can butcher your way around UEFI 2.2 and Secure Boot to have Win 8 and other OSes installed, it just appears that there are no guarantees that the set ups will ever work.  It seems odd with such advanced technology that some things remain hit and miss.

I don't dual boot anymore or I'd test it out.  I believe my work desktop is UEFI (not sure about the secure boot) but I'm running Win2k12 Server on it.

Windows 7 dual boots with Windows 8 no problem, although if I remember correctly I had to run a fix using the Win 7 repair disc to replace some of the boot files, but I assumed that had to do with the detection of pirated OS files rather than just run of the mill "disable anything that isn't Windows 8" behavior.

Fortunately, I have a separate old 32GB SSD I've been using for my very occasional Linux use so I don't worry about dual booting that.

Each OS installs it's own boot loader and dumps all over the previous one so haven't to "repair" the bootloader to show the other available OS to boot to is normal.  For occasional Linux use, you could just use a Linux Live CD and run it that way.
