My VCR is broken, so I'm going to have to watch my favourite films some other way 
I was going to suggest you get a cable that'll feed your VCR output to your PC so you can then screen capture and/or convert it directly to DVD format with the included software but that would require your VCR to be working to begin with

VCR's should be dirt cheap anyway, I'm sure you can find one somehow, online perhaps?
And like Dweez said, dvd players are pretty cheap. Most DVD movies I see in walmart or target run for $5 even since blu-ray started kicking hard in the buns.
