Title: Saving private messages.
Post by: 8ullfrog on January 15, 2010, 10:02:34 PM
On a site I frequent, it has been requested we delete old PM's.

I'm wondering, is there any way to export those? Like to a single text file? Some of that stuff I want to keep.

For SMF there is a modification to export PMs by bulk or selection and I had it installed here for a few days.  Unfortunately it broke my layout and I would have to modify it manually to have it here, but that at least covers "SMF". I would think phpBB would have similar so you should find out what system the forum is running and then you could try requesting the mod to be installed.

I tried the same one on a test site and had bad results as well. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. :)

The site I wanted to get them off of installed a mod, and now I've got them all in xml.

Hmmm.. I noticed a particular site that has just installed that mod - perhaps the admin there is telepathic?

LOL, yes, I had tried the older 1.1.x version back quite a while ago, and it was a disaster for my test site. The SMF2 version works very well with no problems at all. It isn't designed for Rc1.2 but for RC2. The manual edit is only 1 line though. It worked very well.  :)

It's certainly worth doing for the health of the database.  When the members here had a clear out it took 11mb off it's size.

I may have another look at it if the mod has been updated.

Let me know if you decide to try it.  I have the correct edit for the RC1.2 /Subs/personalmessage.php file to make it work.
