Volcanic ash.
« on: April 16, 2010, 04:26:51 AM »
Most people must have heard that a lot of Europe is under an immense cloud of volcanic ash.  Down here in London we should not be as badly affected as further north but I swear the clouds look different and I am finding it harder to breathe?  Anyone else in the U.K think that things are a little odd?

on a side note... :P

The year Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein, Mount Tambora had erupted, and it changed the look of the sky, and weather for the season. Some of the images she saw are documented in letteres to her sister, and the same imagery shows up in the book. And, the bad weather is what also kept them inside for longer periods of time then they'd planned, so probably gave her more time to write.

Today's got a few wispy clouds, seem normal though. Looking at the radar on the news I don't think it's over Liverpool anyhow, it is over London though. It just mentioned on Sky news if the ash starts to settle and you have respiratory problems, stay indoors.

I'm seeing a little blue breaking through now but earlier the clouds looked like a freshly ploughed field - sort or clouds in hair curlers?

I tune into the news and see what gives.

So you managed to persuade it to skip round Liverpool and smack us southern bas-tads in the mouth?

I remember when Mt St Helen went up.
It affected our weather here for a couple years.
This thing is going to mess with Western Europe bad. You guys have a fragile ecology as it is.
I keep my standards low.
That way im never disapointed.

It really hotted up here today so I decided to brave it and go play some football with the kids.  Once the clouds had cleared the air quality seemed to improve but this unique type of eruption has put a lot of silica in the atmosphere which no doubt is going to cause some problems further down the line, like for agriculture for instance.

I just had to drive 500 miles home because no aeroplanes are flying.

I am now officially grumpy - and upset with Iceland. Driving 500 miles on UK roads, on a Friday, including the M5 and the M6, is NOT funny.
plus it is Friday   ouch

Or trying to go EuroStar between UK - France is other pain in the ass.

Probably some kind of panic hits around Europe and now almost everything is closed.
i'm waiting for someone to start an antisocial networking site.
