I'm not sure how to kick this off...

Go find onijin, he'll help.

Is Oni Japanese or part Japanese by chance?

I'm not sure how to take Japanese animation outside of Japan, and I'm not sure the certificating bodies know either.  They just seems to stick a 13 rating on it and hope for the best.

I quite like Marvel Anime as it juices up the stuff that Marvel sanitised, but I still have a bit of that to go through yet so I can't comment fully.

We are watching the third series of Zoids at the moment, if that qualifies?  So far though, I've only liked the first season.

Well, I enjoyed stuff like Jack and the Beanstalk and The Last Unicorn, but I tried watching the Wolverine and Iron Man ones and couldn't make it through one episode.  Probably cuz of my comic fanboyishness but still.

Oh, yeah~ I know what ya mean. There's quite a bit of bad that tend to overshadow the good at times, I've dropped lots of shows.

We started watching Inuyasha yesterday and after 2 episodes, we're impressed.

Again there's an issue with what cert' it should be, as there are body parts flying off every now and then and some of the violence is hard to justify to my 7 year old.

It's good though.

They were American productions from Rankin and Bass, who were actually really good for their time.  They had a cartoon show that was shown once a week over here that I used to tune-in for every week.  The cartoons were usually folk tales that were in danger of being forgotten due to the increasing number of television baby-sitters in use.
Generally the quality of the animation was above that of Hanna Barbara or Warner Bros. with their movie length offerings being wonderfully animated and produced.

Marvel comics were never too deep and quite pulpy and formulaic, so the conversion to animated cartoon was never going to ignite the world outside of the under 10's and fanboy realm.  Not to mention that they are now owned by Disney, so think TMNT after they were bought by Archie Comics....actually most only know that incarnation so disregard.

I never did see Inuyasha, it was a bit long for my taste  :P

I recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion to anyone interested, while the show itself is just good, their rebuild movies are phenomenal.

26 episodes into InuYasha, and we're all loving it.

As usual there are some things a tad hard to explain: like when Miroku the monk feels up Kagome's butt (a schoolgirl) and then suggests that she bear him a son? And the fact that most of the male characters which appear over the age of 50, constantly fantasise about the young girl characters in the show.

The killing and mutilating is easy to explain away in comparison.

I don't watch too much japanimation any more, but my all time favourite would have to be Astro Boy.  Tezuka rules.  He also did Kimba, but that is not about robots and was stolen by Disney (which is ironic as well as possibly the highest complement Tezuka could be paid as, he always loved Disney animation and aimed to emulate it).

Oni would kill me for saying this but, Cowboy Bebop is enjoyable.  Quite old now (a little bit older than NGE) but great fun still.

If you think you are a fiend, watch some Urotsukidōji.  It is the archetypical tentacle rape anime everyone associated Japanimation with during the 90's.

I picked up a video based on the cover some years ago called Dead Leaves.  It's a really good short blast-fest film.

Then there is the quite odd short series called FLCL (Fooly Cooly).  It's slightly dated bet still great.

To be honest with you, until I saw Akira I thought anime was mostly porn.  Cowboy Beebop changed all that.  Then I found myself watching Inuyasha, all of of.  Finally I enjoyed a few episodes of Witch Hunter Robin & Fullmetal Alchemist.

Cowboy Bebop is great, I never did get around to seeing Akira. I've seen FLCL a few times and I loved it to death.
