If he thought this move would give the U.K the moral high ground, the BP deal being finalised on the back of it means that it was no more that a smack in the mouth for the families of lost loved ones.
Wasn't the decision to release him Kenny MacAskills? I'm not very clued up on the working of Scottish politics (or English politics for that matter), but could a British Labour Prime Minister really influence a Scottish SNP Justice Secretary's decision and then get him to take the blame? I wouldn't have thought so. The first link on the page Indie posted (Times Online) claims the reason he was released was that there was a real fear that if he'd died in prison, he'd become a martyr and that would open up Scotland to an increased threat of terror attacks.
