Title: My experiment with Orris Root
Post by: xtopave on January 19, 2012, 08:54:49 AM
smokester posted Orris Root (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orris_root) in the Forum games section and I got intrigued about its (alleged) raspberry taste and smell of violets (that last thing apparently needs years of drying and preparation).
Since I have Iris germanica planted in my garden I cut a piece, I'll let it dry out and see what happens.
When I cut it it smelled potato-ish, pretty much like any other tuber or garden bulb. I licked it and it tasted... well... like nothing. A bit astringent but that was it.
Here it is:

I'll post more pics when it's dry.

Interesting stuff XT.

I hope the flavour occurs a lot sooner than the scent of violets.

Hey that's Charlie! My daughter watches that show.

Here are the "after" pics:

The smell: nothing. It doesn't have much of a smell.
The texture: like cork but not that elastic.
The taste: a bit bitter at first and then like walnuts and something else that I can't define. Definitely NOT raspberries.

It's going to the trash can right this second.  :)

When I saw this thread's header I thought Orris Root was a person. *giggles*

It'd have been more fun surely.
