Lockerbie Bomber Freed for Oil
« on: August 30, 2009, 03:42:39 PM »
Take your pick, they all make me sick  >:(   :(

It was bad enough to let him go in the first place, but for money.

I much prefer the US or the Spanish legal system, a life sentence for every life taken.

The some of Madrid bombers got 43,000 years each in Prison.

I don't think Brown was ever going to sanction the release of Megrahi and the BP deal was always going to happen with Libya sooner or later.  I realise though that this was obviously a sweetner for that deal which is crass at the very least, and for my money it is that pompous arse Mandelson that orchestrated the whole sorry affair - whatever he says in denial.

If he thought this move would give the U.K the moral high ground, the BP deal being finalised on the back of it means that it was no more that a smack in the mouth for the families of lost loved ones.

Wasn't the decision to release him Kenny MacAskills? I'm not very clued up on the working of Scottish politics (or English politics for that matter), but could a British Labour Prime Minister really influence a Scottish SNP Justice Secretary's decision and then get him to take the blame? I wouldn't have thought so. The first link on the page Indie posted (Times Online) claims the reason he was released was that there was a real fear that if he'd died in prison, he'd become a martyr and that would open up Scotland to an increased threat of terror attacks.

That same article states that it was a "British" decision and not solely that of the Scottish government.  If it was purely a Scottish decision then the BP contract would have been of little or no importance, meaning it would have had to have been either the British/English government leaning on the Scots, or a direct request.  The only person I can see that would benefit professionally from this is Mandelson (him being the British business secretary) and it smacks of his kind of mentality whereby the move could be spun as a humanitarian gesture.

It was today or yesterday that Jack Straw admitted that 'trade agreements and oil were a factor in the release' of a murdering *&^%$?' Scotland has it's own oil and gas fields. The decision came from Westminster, the British Government.

The British government cannot make that decision as it has to by law have been made by the Scottish government.  Jack Straw admitted that he backed the PTA exclusion along with Kenny MacAskill back in 2007, and that was undeniably from a British perspective, for the benefit of business, although I would presume MacAskill's motive would have been for compassionate reasons.  But Jack Straw cannot make the decision to release Megrahi any more than I can, it just means that whatever any British MP says, it was within Britain's interest for Scotland to let him go now in 2009 when the BP deal was close to finalising - and I would guess that people like Mandelson would have made that point clear to the Scots now before Megrahi died.
