more and more people are opting for private, family only ones, but in this case, the family was over ruled by the 83 year old mother, older generation still wants them  :-\

As my family are Irish on my mother's side, I have been to some legendary wakes that were a good deal of fun truth be told. 

Free booze and food is not to be sneered at :)

Neither food nor booze at wakes or funerals around here. Only coffee or tea are tolerated. Wait a minute...maybe that's why I hate them so much.

At the moment I'm wondering whether I should watch the game on sunday with my Italian pals as usual, but as it's England vs Italy, I might lose a friend or 3 on the night.

I think it was awful but my mother wants to read it. I talked her out of paying for it and to just borrow it instead.
