I usually play movies from my hdd to tv via a LG LB550 blue ray player.
Unfortunately it has started to freeze on various playable formats. :'(
I am now after a media player .
any one have one or know of a good one.
I am looking at
Western Digital TV Live Streaming Media Player http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330 (http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330)
or
JUSTOP Android 4.0 TV Box HD Network Media Player

Personally, I don't own one although half of my friends do (that'll be 4 then), but right off that bat that Android one looks interesting and I think I'll buy it this evening.

i have an Android tv stick, a Samsung Wi fi Blu ray player, and a Patriot Box Office media player, my Patriot is dying, so after much research, i went with this, good price, good rep, refurb with 6 month warranty http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-WD-TV-Live-HD-Media-Player-WiFi-WDBHG70000NBK-HESN-/370662372312?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D3766867586617939538%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D370662372312%26 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-WD-TV-Live-HD-Media-Player-WiFi-WDBHG70000NBK-HESN-/370662372312?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D3766867586617939538%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D370662372312%26). haven't gotten it from postal.

Roku is supposed to be good and I've seen them for about the same price as the Android one.
-
from what i've read, Roku is better for watching tv channels/shows (supports Plex), WD Live is better for streaming (plays more file types), though the Roku will stream too.
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/multimedia-voip/multimedia-voip-reviews/31620-two-100-streamers-compared-wd-tv-live-vs-roku-2-xs (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/multimedia-voip/multimedia-voip-reviews/31620-two-100-streamers-compared-wd-tv-live-vs-roku-2-xs)
both work well, its really just a matter of personal preference, though i would stay away from the Android tv sticks, very slow, and a waste of money in my opinion, a media player is much better.
-
nearly purchased the wd streamer but out of stock locally. :( or :) depending on the following.
If i play a movie on the WD 500gb hdd it freezes after a while ( not always the same amount of time). if I play the same film on a usb stick it doesn't.
Seems it may be the hdd ??
I am running a WD diagnostics check to see if anything shows ??
-
have the following result
06-Quick Test on drive 4 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 105 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 4!
O dear, it seems its about to go pop ???
Read it
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267202-14-corrupt-files-failing-storage-drive (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267202-14-corrupt-files-failing-storage-drive)
says something about cooling down the drive ??
as its a external i wouldn't have thought it made a difference.
O well , new hdd i suppose. good job i backed it all up :)
-
just got my WD yesterday, quick preliminary seems good, better and simpler to set up than my Patriot Box Office ever was.
-
my wd took a lot of hammer. lasted quite a while, i would buy again

this is the one i bought, but it was free shipping to Canada http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Western-Digital-TV-Live-Streaming-Built-in-WI-FI-HD-Media-Player-WDBHG70000NBK-/230879513886?pt=US_Internet_Media_Streamers&hash=item35c17dcd1e (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Western-Digital-TV-Live-Streaming-Built-in-WI-FI-HD-Media-Player-WDBHG70000NBK-/230879513886?pt=US_Internet_Media_Streamers&hash=item35c17dcd1e)

about £70 in the uk
-
at that price you're better off just buying a new one :-\
-
well i stripped out my external and tried the hdd in my laptop.
works a treat ???
formatted the hdd ( not quick), re tested with WD diagnostic and still fail, tried windows check disc and quess what
that failed right at the end after about 5 hours working, :'( sod it I'm just gonna bin it.
have found a 1 TB for £60 ($90) at pc world, either as a external hdd or internal hdd.
not sure which way I'll go but seems the best way for now.
Did read that the external hdd have a habit of over heating as the case's are enclosed ?? no idea if true, may drill a few holes in the casing
