Just an FYI that apparently it was the server that was down and not any error with Diafora's site.
Looks like everything connected again.
Cheers!

Yay! We're back, live!!
-
It went down about 12.30am GMT and must have been out for at least an hour. This is only the second time in 2 months that the server has been properly down for any length of time although there has been other times where it has been shaky. I still consider it a petty good service overall and doesn't seem to be slowed too much by the chatroom and/or other activity so we will have to live with these occasionally.
Sorry for the temporary loss of service.
-
The apache server running this site stopped last night and wasn't restarted until some pressure was applied to my host. All good now but not very good show by the Houston based server. Robin if you read this: I think you need to load up the 12 bore.
Sorry folks, perhaps it tried to do a bunk when it heard it would have to answer OC1 from now on...
-
I received this as a response to my telling them Robin is on the way..
There was a problem on the network which has since been resolved by our Technical Support team. There was no data loss and normal service has resumed. If you experience any further problems do not hesitate to contact us.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Kind Regards,
What was the problem then I wonder? Forgot to restart apache?..

Had to fire off a few shots to get their attention.
But I think they got the messege. lol

Another little outage so sorry again. It was the server this time and not the services it was running, so we should be good now for a while.
Lock and load Robin.
-
I'm getting pissed now with my host. If the server goes down at night, it isn't restarted until the morning when the UK staff role in!!
Sorry folks, I'll try to avoid it happening in the future.
-
I have been getting server overloads all day for some reason, and it could well be to do with the site and not the host. I have deleted some subdomains that were active and their databases in an attempt to speed this place back up, and the little errors you may be experiencing are probably to do with that and not another outage. I'll check the apache logs just in case and poke the host with a stick if necessary, and I hope to have things back running smoothly again soon.
-
Looks like it worked as the site is really quick now, for me at least, and the server overloads have stopped.
As you were..
-
Am I the only one that couldnt get through on the site yesterday? I tried for like 14 hours and nothing. Hhhhmmm... ???

I packed it in around 1am GMT and all was well then, and I was back about 11hrs later so it couldn't have been down for 14hrs either way? When it does go down it is usually around the midnight mark GMT so what time did you start to have probs dear?
-
Well, I got up around 10:00am and retired at 3:30am so that entire time. I was talking on the phone with another member late night and he had no problem at all so I guess it was just me. I just thought it was weird and wondered if anyone else shared my confusion.
-
Sorry about earlier but I believe there was a catastrophic hardware failure with the server in Texas. There was no data loss thank goodness, and we shouldn't experience and residual ill effects from it.
Soz all.
-
Friday to Sunday I logging in without problems.

Friday to Sunday I logging in without problems.
It was only today we had probs, and Apache was completely kaput. All my subdomains were also down and all I could do was post that standard HTML error page - that hopefully most people missed.
-
I missed it.
I usually log in when I get up, but had a late night with beer last night, plus I had to visit someone in hospital so didn't get back until everything was fixed. ;D
poo happens smokes, not your fault.

It was a bad one today and the page that came up was the dreaded "SMF could not connect to the database" error. It was domain wide and the testing site, the SMF 2 site that I have up, and even the your site were all down. That's why I upped a custom error page to assure people that it wasn't anything to do with their personal login like what has happened to some (myself most notably) on the Demonoid forum. I even had a message for dweez on it as there could have well been a loss of data, but I guess he was still sleeping as he pulled a late one here last night.

So it wasn't the down at midnight on a Friday one. :-\
This could call for a re-think, on things (irons in fires) :-\
If you need me, I'm here.

It was a hardware failure apparently on the main server in Houston that happened around 11am today (GMT). It could still handle traffic but Apache was just spitting out a 1040 error so none of this PHP stuff could be run. I was worried that there would be some data loss but thankfully I did back us up last night so it shouldn't have been hard for the members to update the few threads and scores from overnight - although I am not sure that OC's witty remarks would have worked second time round, that's if she could even remember them?
All is well now and I am not putting this one down to our host, as I realise there was not much they could have done about it.
Saying that.. I have just tried to post this and got that damn "failed to connect" error that happens every night around this time?
-
I haven't had any prob so far tonight.
But like I said, if you ever need me just yell out.

Thanks for that indie. I am not going to stick with this host for a second tour of duty and as from February things will all change (perhaps even sooner). That does not mean that we will be any better off as we could have problems with the new host, but at least it keeps it interesting..
-
Is there server problem again?
I get cannot connect to server message saturday morning (GMT+2).

this happens to me sometimes early in the wee small hours

We have been experiencing some sporadic and user specific problems, that we are trying to diagnose at the moment. In fact I started a thread for that purpose but should have stickied it perhaps. Because these things don't seem to affect all members, or indeed at least 2 at the same time, it could well be that we have a problem with the site in some way as SMF can develop quirky little problems over time. When we migrate to a new host, I may upgrade us to SMF 2 as it is quite slick in comparison.
Could any of you that have experienced these sorts of errors and more, please report them in this thread:
http://www.diasfora.co.uk/index.php?topic=2943.0
Thanks
-
Sorry about the returning error we have had today. I managed to get my host to correct the issue quicker than last time, and they are now researching the root cause and will report back.
-
Yeah, I'm interested to know what got fouled up.
-
Yeah, I'm interested to know what got fouled up.
PhpMyAdmin was spitting out a 1040 error (too many connections) which patently wasn't the problem. With MySQL down Apache then couldn't parse the PHP I presume, and so we encountered that old SMF chestnut of an error page. I then added our custom page and monitored one of the subdomains until it came back on.
I had thought that it was to do with the main servers in Houston as they generally get blamed for most things, but after sending a critical ticket to my host - only an hour later we are back running, so it may well be their configuration of our site.
-
Yeah, I'm interested to know what got fouled up.
I'd hate to think it was due to the content of my posts.
-
For the last 2-3 days I cant pan through any thread without getting cut off by my browser. The only way to get back in is to reload the homepage from my favorites. Strange?
-
About 15 minutes ago, the site was unreachable for me for about 30 seconds.

Your browser is cutting you off? that sounds nasty.
Doesn't sound like a site issue and has the whiff of something local, but over the next few weeks there are going to be some changes here anyway, most importantly the host, and I hope to iron out most or all of the glitches that we have learned to live, during that time.
-
K, just an FYI if anyone else was experiencing anything similar.
-

:D
It sure is rather rude.
-
The server in Houston is really struggling today and is affecting the speed of our site. I have informed the host and hopefully things will get better shortly.
Thanks for your patience.
-

That happened to me yesterday.
-
That happened to me yesterday.
It happens most days I would guess it's a Cron job run on the main server to reboot a service or something.
-
No biggie! :)
It's ok most of the time.
-
Our host seemed to have some kind of catastrophic failure this morning as when I checked our server status, not only were we down but about 30 of there others servers also had problems? we are up again within an hour of me sending an urgent request and I see the last post here was around 7am GMT, so we were probably only down for 2 or 3 hours.
It is our first major glitch since the move and but otherwise I find them a great improvement from our last host.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
PS. The server is still not 100% functional so things may still be a little fragile for a while.
-
I realise we just had another lil blip and I am in contact with our host to get to the bottom of why the server is starting to act up. It may be the MORPG I am running from a different domain but from the same server that is causing it, but so far that is not taxing either the processors or bandwidth.
It does fix itself a hell of a lot quicker that our last host, so I am still happy with the service.
-
Hmm...
I haven't been any problems with the site in weeks.
Probably because I am coming and going weird times.
-
I realise we just had another glitch with the HTTP service going down. The host has set up a more aggressive monitoring system for our server so that outages can be resolved quicker if that is possible. Anyone know what time it went down exactly?
-
I didn't notice anything.

thats the message i got when i tried to update the score board in the movie thread.
i get this messaage on safari and firefox

Sorry Mish. Something is pegging the server at the moment and I have informed the host of it twice this morning. The server load is 10 to 20 times what is healthy but it is none of my sites that is doing it so I have to wait until they find the culprit (or error) and resolve it. We seem to be unlucky as I check all their servers and ours was the only one with problems, but they are a really good company and are all over customers' complaints like a rash. I expect normal service to resume shortly.
-
Server load is back to normal and the site should work just as quickly as before.
-
i got the message again when I tried to update the scoreboard in the movie thread.

Basically what happens is that the server that this site is hosted on, has something that taxes its processors to a point where it hasn't enough resource left to handle the requests from our forum. The forum software then spits out the error you have seen or that old chestnut "connection problems" that has plagued the 'noid as well, and until the server load is reset to something viable we will get slow page loading and the occasional error like that. It may be us that is the problem as things like the chatroom can sometimes cause this, but to date I can not find anything our end that is the culprit even though I do run other things in other domains on the same server. Our host is keeping an eye on things and the server so these problems shouldn't persist, but I really appreciate you mentioning them and anyone else that notices something off.
-
Okay, thanks :)
-
The server load was off the scale this morning when I checked and I managed to get tech support to resolve the problem before I had to go about my business - so sorry for those who may have been inconvenienced.
The only thing that may have caused this ongoing problem from our end is the installation of the old "countdown" tag, as it seems buggy and the problem first surfaced shortly after its installation. For that reason I am going to get rid as it is only the stumper game that needs it, and that isn't really played. You could just manually state the end time for that game if it were to gain interest.
-
Yeah i couldn't get in for a while.
The Demons Den's down at the mo,as there's a host change.
Don't know how long it'll be down.
-
I was on before bed, and it was fine. It must have been after that.
-
Yeah, me too. I think about 2:30-3:00AMish

Buster is now with the same host but he is on a much bigger package (there is nothing rude in that comment, right!) and his server has been fine everyday I have checked it.
I haven't checked his site but it is probably a propagation issue if it's down.
-
There's a page there,it's in maintenance mode.

I checked and the domain is on the new nameservers, so it probably needs a day more to fully propagate.

OK! Thanks Smokes :)
-
Ok, I'm officially sick of this shitty server and its nonsense and I am about to tell the host as much. This morning when it was "wicked slow" again this is what its load and was for people who are interested:
to be healthy the "load" should be under 10 so it is plain to see why we have experienced these issues. I have now uninstalled anything that might be causing it our end (from all my sites) so this is basically now unequivocally a shoddy service,
As I write the load is still around the 7 or 8 mark which means we should be able to operate, but may run into an error or to on occasion.
Very sorry all.

In the past.. on the internet in general.. some sites take big traffic becuase so many people are trying to access the internet for various holiday reasons. Either more people are checking on more things like flights etc. Or, more people are on line because they have off school and work. It's most likely their (the host) issue..and unrelated to the holiday.. But.. I suppose it could be extra traffic pulling everyting down. I'm not a server expert, so I don't know if that's viable. That's more just an assumption of common sense.

A 4cpu server like ours shouldn't struggle with the sort of traffic seen by us or even demonoid for that matter. If Facebook was on there I would understand it (perhaps) but this looks to me as if either another site is pushing it or it may have a virus? Either way it is not normal and ours is the only server out of a hundred or so that they have that seems to be affected?
Funny thing is - half an hour ago I sent them the first "this is taking the Michael" kind of ticket and all of a sudden the load has dropped dramatically..

Here's is some good news:

Hello,
Server load has been stable for now, though we are keeping a close watch on the services. We will be suspending the heavy users from this server, whose scripts are found to resource hog at the server.
In the mean time, incase you need us to transfer your accounts to a new server, with lesser accounts, do let us know if you like to proceed? This process, we will transfer all the contents, the name servers of the domains should be changed to the new names.
We are keeping a close check on the server hunt.
Regards,
Sari Jay
Technical Support
This is the good thing about my host in that they do genuinely jump on problems as soon as it is possible for them. I will have at least a couple of feedback emails from staff higher up to check I am satified with the way things are going and the way this particular problem has been dealt with. So I will be sticking with this lot even if we experience more issues, as I do in all honesty, have faith in them.
-
^ these folks seem to be very serious about being helpful. I had a few support tickets with them upon testing out the server, and they jumped in and fixed it extremely quick. I have been impressed with their response. I have had hosts in the past that would not even answer a support ticket for 3 to 4 days, and then another day or two to repair. These folks are on it immediately. :)
-
Server load has been up a bit this morning but I did inform them of the issue immediately. We should be back to normal shortly.
-
The HTTP service just dropped out but I got them to restart it within 10 mins. Sorry for the break in service.
-
I'm aware I spoke too soon.. I am trying to get things back to fully functional and we should be stable again shortly.
-
I've been using the forum while you've been making these last couple of posts and haven't noticed anything amiss. :-\
-

You must have been lucky or taking too long with your beer breaks :). The first loss of service was about 8 minutes, then it came back for 3 or 4 minutes and then went down for about 10. I am constantly monitoring the server as the chances are it will go again.
-
You must have been lucky
Now that's highly unlikely. However my attention was veering on and off to "Humf" on the telly. :-[ Maybe I was just watching that at the relevant times.
-
Shaky HTTP service again. Host has been notified and I'm hoping it will settle down soon.
-
the site is off and on for me at the moment.
server busy or cannot connect :-\
-

I can see the load is a little high and it may be that when you were on they were adding more accounts to the server which will slow it down while they are being configured. I'll keep an eye on it.
-
Another blip?
-
Yeah, I had one that said something like "SMF database was not found" (or something like that). Then when it came back it said there was only one new post since my last visit, which seems pretty low.
-
Yeah, mySql went down but I was in the process of asking them to have a look at the server load when it did. I had to do something else shortly after submitting the request to them so hopefully we weren't down for long?
-
I think it was only a few minutes.
-
briefly down when i attempted to log on about 17.10 .
had to try a few times to establish communication to the site.
server error it said
-
Server went offline briefly in case anyone had problems. It was rectifed fairly swiftly though which bodes well.
-
Hey!! Im off now bye :)
-
Did we have a problem just then?
-
Server load just spiked. It's probably either routine scripts running or someone with another account is doing so extensive maintenance. Our server uses 12 cpus these days so these incidents should be rare.
-
I am monitoring it and it is still a bit high (server load that is). If it persists I'll have it looked into so if anyone experiences it later on, please report it here. Thanks.
-
afraid i have slow connection to the site at the moment .
any link here takes a ages to load up
-
Is it alright now?
-
My connection has been slow everywhere today. I thought maybe it was Cyber Monday shopping issue related :D
-
My connection has been slow everywhere today. I thought maybe it was Cyber Monday shopping issue related :D
We've had a tube strike here in London and today was nicknamed "stay at home Monday". That no doubt made it slower locally, and I would guess that a lot of the rest of the country stayed at home due to the February weather we have had of late.
The server we reside on is the nuts nowadays and we will still get slow when other accounts are doing their maintenance thing, but our load rarely goes above 1 and I am hosting about 8 sites myself. That said, gremlins know no honour..
-
No problem for me at all.
I pop up randomly and every time site works.
-
It's been really slow this afternoon, but seems to have picked up a bit of pace now.
-
faster at loading up for me as well ;D
-
It's been really slow this afternoon, but seems to have picked up a bit of pace now.
Yes I experienced the slowing down and saw that the server was performing well though. I reported it and there does seem to be a glitch somewhere that "senior admins" are investigating and it appears to be do to with the datacenter.
We should never have some of the load issues we have had in the past as the tech we reside on has greatly improved, but these gremlins may stretch their legs from time to time.
-
I was online late last night (my late night) and again today since my 2 PM and it's working perfectly for me.
-
Working well for me as well.
-
Works for me now.
I couldn't log in again last night. It was the same Database Error message I saw a while back.
