Title: Volcanic ash.
Post by: smokester on April 16, 2010, 04:26:51 AM
Most people must have heard that a lot of Europe is under an immense cloud of volcanic ash.  Down here in London we should not be as badly affected as further north but I swear the clouds look different and I am finding it harder to breathe?  Anyone else in the U.K think that things are a little odd?

on a side note... :P

The year Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein, Mount Tambora had erupted, and it changed the look of the sky, and weather for the season. Some of the images she saw are documented in letteres to her sister, and the same imagery shows up in the book. And, the bad weather is what also kept them inside for longer periods of time then they'd planned, so probably gave her more time to write.

Today's got a few wispy clouds, seem normal though. Looking at the radar on the news I don't think it's over Liverpool anyhow, it is over London though. It just mentioned on Sky news if the ash starts to settle and you have respiratory problems, stay indoors.

I'm seeing a little blue breaking through now but earlier the clouds looked like a freshly ploughed field - sort or clouds in hair curlers?

I tune into the news and see what gives.

So you managed to persuade it to skip round Liverpool and smack us southern bas-tads in the mouth?

I remember when Mt St Helen went up.
It affected our weather here for a couple years.
This thing is going to mess with Western Europe bad. You guys have a fragile ecology as it is.

It really hotted up here today so I decided to brave it and go play some football with the kids.  Once the clouds had cleared the air quality seemed to improve but this unique type of eruption has put a lot of silica in the atmosphere which no doubt is going to cause some problems further down the line, like for agriculture for instance.

I just had to drive 500 miles home because no aeroplanes are flying.

I am now officially grumpy - and upset with Iceland. Driving 500 miles on UK roads, on a Friday, including the M5 and the M6, is NOT funny.
plus it is Friday   ouch

The M5 is pretty bad to begin with.

Or trying to go EuroStar between UK - France is other pain in the ass.

Probably some kind of panic hits around Europe and now almost everything is closed.

It is only my mainland European friends that are really being affected by this as their schools here in the uk are closed now while the English stream schools are back on monday.  They had intended to go on holiday or visit the homeland next week but there stuck here in the scorching sunshine..

Worse things happen at sea I'm told.

this is what happens when a jumbo flies through volcanic ash

Quote
British Airways Flight 9, sometimes referred to as the Jakarta incident, was a scheduled British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Auckland, with stops in Bombay, Madras, Kuala Lumpur, Perth and Melbourne. On 24 June 1982, the route was flown by City of Edinburgh, a 747-200 registered G-BDXH. The aircraft flew into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, resulting in the failure of all four engines, although the reason for the failure was not then apparent to the crew or ground control. The aircraft was diverted to Jakarta in the hope that enough engines could be restarted to allow it to land there. The aircraft was able to glide far enough to exit the ash cloud, and all engines were restarted (although one failed again soon after), allowing the aircraft to land safely.

Millions of stranded travellers face further air chaos as the volcanic ash from Iceland that has closed most of Europe's airspace continues to spread.

An estimated three-quarters of flights were cancelled on Saturday. About 20 countries closed their airspace - some have extended flight bans into Monday.

Scientists say the Icelandic volcano activity shows no sign of abating.

Dutch airline KLM and German airline Lufthansa have carried out test flights to see if it is safe for planes to fly.

KLM said its plane, a Boeing 737, had reached its maximum operating altitude of about 13km in the skies over the Netherlands, and there had been no problems during the flight.

The aircraft and its engines were being inspected for possible damage. After the results of that technical inspection the airline hopes to get permission from the aviation authorities to start up operations again.

As i don't take in the news I don't know what's really going on with the volcano. Anyhow I was thinking what if the eruption spewed out volcanic ash for the next 3 years. They would have to reroute all flights and would be costly and we would end up paying up to 4 times the current ticket price to fly.
Just a few days of inconvenience I think nature is being kind to us. ;)

My mum's had to take days off because the flights are cancelled :-\

It makes a bit of a mockery of all this global warming claptrap.

-- governments and activists (in different measures, of course) all around the world are trying to save the planet one carbon footprint at a time, and Mother Nature takes one look and makes us all look like idiots in a second - how many Jumbo Jet miles are needed to save one second of this eruption?

I am surprised that Greenpeace aren't picketing Eyjafjallaj?kull to get it to stop all of this ash production.

I'm almost tempted to mass circulate that comment to my friends it's so funny - although 'mass' might be a bit of an exaggeration in my case.

Europe's airlines and airports question flight bans.

Europe's air industry has called for an urgent review of flight bans imposed because of volcanic ash from Iceland.

The bodies representing most European airlines and airports have questioned the need for the unprecedented curbs, which affect millions of travellers.

Airlines that have carried out test flights say planes showed no obvious damage after flying through the ash.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said he hoped 50% of Europe's airspace would be risk-free on Monday.

He said the current situation was "not sustainable" and European authorities were working to find a solution that did not compromise safety.

We cannot just wait until this ash cloud dissipates," he added.

Mr Kallas also said EU transport ministers would hold a video teleconference on Monday to assess the situation. About 17 European countries have closed their airspace.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8628323.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8628323.stm)

Europe's air industry is really worried how much they lost and hundreds thousands passengers around the world are stuck in airports, hotels, etc.so angry customers eat them alive soon if nothing happen.

The ash cloud is due to reach the east coast of the USA in about three more hours, presumably it will have thinned out a lot by then so shouldn't be too much of a problem.

In a round about way it effected the people on the east coast participating in the Boston Marathon. Lots of people had to cancel plans to be there because they couldn't get flights to the event. They recieved vouchers for next year so they don't have to requalify for next year, or lose their entry fees.

And I don't know if people can reach this link.. but SNL did a funny fake interview with Bjork where she sang the volcano a song to help it go back to sleep.

No Iceland, Europe said it wanted its "cash" back!

... or: "It was the last wish of the Icelandic economy that its ashes be spread over Europe"
:D :D

It's estimated, that European air industry loss 200 million Pounds per day.

Maybe it was caused by the federation of Icelandic alchemists in a failed attempt to boost the economy.

They're not dead yet as they still own half of West Ham.

Be gentle with that last comment, please.
