LONDON ? An amateur treasure hunter prowling English farmland with a metal detector stumbled upon the largest Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found, a massive seventh-century hoard of gold and silver sword decorations, crosses and other items, British archaeologists said Thursday.
One expert said the treasure found by 55-year-old Terry Herbert would revolutionize understanding of the Anglo-Saxons, a Germanic people who ruled England from the fifth century until the Norman conquest in 1066. Another said the find would rank among Britain's best-known historic treasures.

He's going to be so rich!
-
Government stole it,they tell that it's national treasury from middle age and it's part of the history,so British Museum confiscated it.
Founder get nice diploma and few coins and that's it.

I didn't expect him to be able to keep it but they didn't even give him a decent finders fee?
-
Museums will bid on the find, and the money from the winning bid (expected to be in 7 figures) will be split 50/50 between the land owner and the finder.
-
if its classed a treasure doesnt the government get the majority of the cash raised

Strangely both sides make sense. I would love to know about the financial outcome of this.

The hoard was officially declared treasure by a coroner, which means it will now be valued by a committee of experts and offered up for sale to a museum. Proceeds would be split fifty-fifty between Herbert and his farmer friend, who has not been identified. The find's exact location is being kept secret to deter looters.

Seems if you try to get ahead,, the govornment sees to it you dont.
-
you can understand why most finds go on into the blackmarket

I know I wouldnt report any,, but now in the US ( since the patriot act,, or the Bush/Cheney supression of civil rights as some call it) if you seem to have a large sum of money out of nowhere, you are deemed a domestic terrorist.
