Its only been what, four hundred and four years since supposedly Guy Fawkes instigated the gun powder plot. I have often wondered why this celebration still goes on today and what it means to the people that attend events.

I put supposedly, because Fawkes was tortured, until he confessed. Then hanged, drawn and quartered, and his remains were sent to the four corners of the kingdom(?).

He's a bit like William Wallace with the hung, drawn and quartered bit, but Wallace didn't get his knackers put between Big Ben and the Hammer.

The local authority pull down any bonfire's the kids have made and the fire brigade put out any that they have missed.

This whole county is starting to sicken me.

They are all just bottom's, we have/had a community spirit where everyone/most of the street would chip in for the fireworks and an adult would set them off, so what is their problem.

I was going to bring V for Vendetta to watch on Bonfire Night,, but I forgot it in the US.

The fireworks werepretty,and I got to live a dream ive had for 20 odd years,, being in the UK on Bonfire Night.

People dont need a reason to get together and do something special,, just Bonfire Night gives them an excuse to do so without rationalazation.( sp)

I say, let people have a good time once in a while.

No,,Tracy's got a pretty bad kidey infection nd shes stessed about her mother and all, so I took the girls out and did it with them. Otherwise they wouldnt have done anything. BUT,,,There is allways next year .
I think Im going to watch V For Vendetta every year from now on though. ( DEAR GOD IM GOING BRITISH!!!!!!)

I thought it was brilliant. AND if I remember right,, the graphic novel took place in the UK also.
Its one of my alltime favorite movies.

Alan Moore wrote V for Vendetta, a comics SERIES set in a dystopian england, which aside from facism had nothing to do with the video.

The video, was written by Larry Wachowski, who would have been better served by not making horrid sequels to his one good film (the matrix).

Instead he continues to be a poo sandwich factory, bringing us such classics as "Speed racer" and "There's something seriously wrong with my brother".

You may notice the parallels between the warner brothers video "V for vendetta" and "The matrix 3: Dear god make it stop".

Either way, V is an insane anarchist, Guy Fawkes was not.

If you are looking for an American "Guy Fawkes", might I suggest Timothy Mcveigh.

Sorry, that came off far more bitter than I intended. But I do think there is a parallel between Mcveigh and Fawkes.

BTW,, living in Oklahoma,,I have to say one thing about Mcveigh,, he was a murdering piece of crap.
I lost a couple of freinds in that bombing,, The people in the OKC bombing were inocent victims.
( sorry,, im sensitive about the Mceigh statement.)

I was thinking of Guy Fawkes Day as similar even to Cinco de Mayo that we celebrate in the US. Not really... but sort of. There are some holidays that are weird we do celbrate still, and they are a good excuse to shoot off fireworks and drink.

The Guy fawkes thing always does interest me though.. because as an outsider I don't know how big a deal it is.. or, if it holds meaning etc..

As far as revolutionaries go? I'm really divided about that. Sometimes I think it's valid. Sometimes it's handled wrong. Really really wrong. It's a huge slippery slope idea.

It was a good idea, bad effort though.
It shouldnt have gone to violence.
Best way to fight a system is to fight WITHIN the system.

The Gunpoweder Treason was to stop or retaliate against religious persecution.
Mcveigh and Nichols were just murdering nutjobs trying to make a statement.

Let's get this straight: Guido (Guy) Fawkes was nothing more than the fall-guy, it was Robert Catesby that was the brains behind it all. And the "Gunpowder plot" had little to do with politics as it was just a group of good Catholic boys who wanted to oust the Protestant monarch/y.

If we wanted to equate that to the modern day, then I suppose it would be the religious extremists that are the nearest thing to it.

I am very glad that I edited what I said, my original post was fairly inflammatory. I was visiting my father in the hospital that day, and we were locked in the hospital. My dad was intubated at the time and just held my hand.
I think I must have been eight or nine at most.

The point was not that fawkes was blowing up politicians, but that he was blowing up protestants.

The parallels of the two men are truly frightening.

Fawks and Mcveigh were nothing alike,,Fawk didnt kill inocent people justbecause of his own paranoia.

AND,,,I still concider V or Vendetta a good movie,,
Of course, I also concider Zombie Diaries a relavant movie when it comes to human nature lmao

BUT,,I just figured V to be a relavant movie to watch on Bonfire Night,,call me wierd.
