General Discussion / Re: Current Events
« Last post by 8ullfrog on April 21, 2024, 09:21:25 PM »
I sadly had my opinion confirmed, another worker has been recovered from the bridge debris, and he was in fact in the work vehicle.
The progress on the bridge cleanup seems glacial, but they are lifting 40-ton chunks of the bridge at a time. They were saying that the crane they use for that is rated for 100 tons, but that in structural engineering terms, you never want to push the envelope on such things.

The current ARMY plan for the area is to clear a temporary channel that will allow single lane traffic to the port, which will be run at night, while recovery and refloating will be attempted during the day. I was going to say that the events seem scheduled out pretty far, but May is sneaking up on us alarmingly quickly.

Oddly enough, I think Schwarzeneggers obstinate position was preferable to modern California politics. He was elected to essentially pump the breaks on a distasteful vision of the future, and he did exactly that, to the benefit and detriment of California. He was absolutely a protest vote, like when people elect a dog to be mayor on the understanding that the new mayor will not be pushing an agenda, but instead will be a photogenic good boy.

I feel like the current agenda of progress at any price to be highly damaging to the state. My county has been obsessed with phasing out cars and putting in bike lanes, and locals despise the "regional plan". They want ample parking, without meters. 101, a state long artery is damn near clogged in my old hometown by green lanes, while traffic has been thinned to one lane going either way.

golly, this isn't the thread I thought it was.

I watched a Danny Mcbride video earlier, and found it amusing that he was essentially seduced by Bill Murray on an airplane flight, but managed to get him to do a scene on his show in return.

Kenny bless'ed powers is usually good for a laugh or two.

I agree. Not funny, on reflection. Another applicable quote, from a chap called Robert Sapolsky (in a book called "Behave" - well worth a read):

We’re really out there as a species in that sometimes our high status individuals don’t merely plunder and instead actually lead, actually attempt to facilitate the common good. We’ve even developed bottom-up mechanisms for collectively choosing such leaders on occasion. A magnificent achievement. Which we then soil by having our choosing our leaders be shaped by implicit, automatic factors more suitable to five-year-olds deciding who should captain their boat on a voyage with the Teletubbies to Candyland.

There's no question that many voters prefer an entertainer to someone who has actual experience in government.  We had one movie star and now have descended to the ranks of bad reality tv.  It's disturbing that many can't determine the difference or even care, since elections have become more like popularity contests than job interviews.  Like, would you rather have Trump fix your plumbing or a licensed plumber?  Trump might be more entertaining in the short term, but when your toilet overflows, you might have the occasion to reflect on the wisdom of such a choice.

From a slightly different angle, this made me laugh today, when I saw it elsewhere:

There's a significant percentage of them running around loose in the U.S.   And they can vote.  If they're over 35 and native born, they can even run for President.  It's hard to determine which is worse.

This may be terrible, depending on your frame of reference but a Scottish friend posted it on FB today.

Q:  How can I tell Mick Jagger from a Scotsman?

A:  Mick Jagger says, "Hey! You! Get off of my cloud!"  while a Scotsman says, "Hey! MacLeod! Get off of my ewe!"

I've never heard of it.  Does it come shrink wrapped or something?

Packet meat.

I was hoping for something better than canned meat, and was pleasantly surprised.

But holy poo was it spicy.

I feel like if it were seasoned less I'd buy more, but that was a scorcher. Very enjoyable tacos, but I can still feel the burn.

I thought it was going to be more like shredded beef, instead it was beef crumble.

Pleasantly surprised, but I'm not going to make it a staple. A half pound was plenty for dinner.

Made fresh cream scones for breakfast.  Someone gave me a quart of heavy cream so I froze it in ziploc bags in amounts called for in the recipe.  The fat separates, so I had to add water to the bag to get the rest of the clinging fatty bits out.  The dough was a bit wet, but the scones turned out well.  Still, they'd probably have been better without frozen cream.

A few from the Garden of Eden:
God created Adam before he created Eve because he didn't want someone telling him how to create Adam.

So the night before Christmas, Adam turned to his wife and said, "It's Christmas, Eve."

How long did Cain hate his brother? As long as he was Abel.

We are watching Mandy with Diane Morgan.  She's really willing to make herself look ridiculous for a laugh and largely succeeds.  There's a good supporting cast, too with occasional visits from some other serious actors -- BBC series regulars.  It's pretty entertaining.
