The first one I posted, I picked something like

British
Doctor
1942

Then went looking for someone, it turned out to be a good one as it came up with an author was had something to do with Dr Who. That stumped him for a wee while.  ;D

Aargh, I have seen that face before and I am fairly certain of his occupation, but his name won't come to mind. Wiki here I come.
Title: Re: Big Stumper's little brother - 2pt and 1pt game
Post by: smokester on January 11, 2009, 09:24:41 AM
For the record there a 27 different combinations and if you know the occupation that goes down to 9 I believe.  One of the rules is that if you out the right combination into google the person should return high up on the first page of results, so it should be fairly easy for you then... ;).  It is more a relaxed game that me and indie used to play by PM.

Great job eel and well done CMF for adapting to this game so well.  Just a heads up about finding mini stumpers, indie worked out that you can do it in reverse i.e: If you enter a year, a nationality and an occupation into google, whoever comes up near the top is usable.  Just an idea if you wonder how to get the stumpers and I actually keep hitting the "random" link on wikipedia until I find someone famous enough to qualify.

Well Done eel, welcome to the game   ;D

Ren? Goscinny (http://blogasterixgalo.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html), I don't think CMF will mind moving the game on.

You get 2pts for a correct guess and 1pt if you can stump everybody. You can post your new stumper now.

If your stumper has many pictures of him in a search, try going for option 3 in the tineye suggestions like I am doing now.  The pic I am posting is not indexed by tineye and it is the second one I tried.  Easy peasy.

First of it's better of you copy and paste your counter as it will keep updating, and secondly I have tried all 27 permutations (twice) and cannot get him?  Oh well. I nearly had a freebie with Salman Rushdie so I suppose it is "swings and roundabouts" :)

I just searched the right combination (just to see if it still works) and it is out there. On the photo, he looks chubbier than his more recent pics.  ;)

I'm not saying that your game isn't working, I'm saying that I didn't find him after to attempts at going through the options.  I have presumably missed him and that means that this game has beaten this time.

Mohamed Nasheed?

It was that photo that fooled me as I must have looked at him 3 or 4 times but looked at the overall returns that looked nothing like him.  It was only when I paid more attention to the odd ones that google images returned that I saw the picture you used..

Well you could have called this guy by a few names as he is one of Russia most famous spies.  Interesting conflict of opinion in that wiki says he was born in the UK under the name I have given below, but he was also known as "Rudolf Ivonovich Abel" and it is also said that he was in fact born in Russia the year before (although there doesn't seem to be much evidence to support this and Wiki dismisses it).  Either way he was Russian either by birth or repatriation.

We'll call him Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilyam_Genrikovich_Fisher)as most of the literature suggests.

Ok. The last stumper was a Polish economist, born in 1947 and names Leszek Balcerowicz.

In the rules I added a while back that you can either go again when you successfully stump, or offer it open.  I choose to play again.

I was leaving this one until CMF showed up, but I'll update it now on the off chance that he or someone else wants to play it.

The answer was Fran Bo?njaković (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran_Bo%C5%A1njakovi%C4%87) a Croatian engineer born in 1902.

That was the Australian playwright Stephen Sewell.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sewell_(writer) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sewell_(writer))

Ok, he comes up on the second page for me using all the variations of inputting the facts.  This nearly happened once before as it seems that search returns vary depending on country.  If you are sure he shows on your first page of search returns, then I have thought of a way that might solve this issue.  The rules could be changed to add the birth month as well as the year.  It would make it slightly easier as it would guarantee a high on the page placing for your stumper, but if you hit the right combination without it it usually is pretty easy anyhow.

Another way might be to make this game a "name that wiki stumper" whereby you search wikipedia and not google for the answer.  It should unify the searches regardless of where you are, and it would make it much simpler to select a stumper (all you would have to do it think of a profession, nationality of timeframe for their birth, and pick one of the returns not having to research how google handles it), and it might make the game more fun?

Either way it should be dealt with now if the mechanism for solving this game is flawed.  What do ya think CMF or anyone interested?

I don't really like the thing with the month. Already, that it is long to find a good stumper.
As for the other one, how exactly will it work? It sounds good.

And is my new stumper still valid or do I have to post a new one with the new rules?

actually scratch that, it seems to be working fine and I think I honestly missed it.  I believe google was set to my local search after researching the World game when I tested the combination again.

I'll get onto the new one in the morning.

Isaac Asimov before his "Wolverine" period?

That was actually quite difficult as I couldn't get the whole "Fred Hoyle" thing out of my mind, and was then convinced he was British.
