Popularized in the new ?it? capital of the world, Dubai, UAE, this sleek, sophisticated craft is sure to keep you in the see-and-be-seen crowd.

So, crank up the Fab Four and take a dunk!

Some people just dont get mny sense of humor.
I mean, for instance, a guy walking along, minding his own busines and falls into a manhole isnt funy.
Now, if said guy falls into a manhole and falls into the person comming out of the manhole, now thats hilarious.

Then I want to make something to wear from it like a skirt, and see if anyone notices the pattern :D

I would be VERY surprised if you did.  Even more so if you wanted that fabric.

Did I ever tell you that some Muslim tribes live in my province and that they still weave cloth the traditional way?  It was awesome, I tell ya.  Some of the fabrics were beautiful.

That's extremely profound Robin. The whole statement. And well worded and precise. heh.. it gave me a complete moment of clarity.

I can see why things happen. And why people do things. Guns are no exception. I totally get both sides. But yeah.. I can't deal with them personally. The only time I ever shot one (other then a pellet gun), I burst out crying immediately. The person I was shooting with thought it was the sound and the kick back that shocked me. But it wasn't. It was the complete sense of awe that I felt. It was something I felt before, but was consecrated by the act. Guns are just.. awesome, in the sense they ilicit an overwhelming feeling of reverence. But for me it was a reverence that I don't want in my hands. The power is what made me overwhelmed, and sort of sad. But for other people, it's a different kind of reverece. Still respectful, but other people embrace guns. We're al just .. different.

I was raised around them, My late father was a Navy SEAL.
It isnt the fealing of power, it isnt the awsome feeling of holding the most evil thing in the world ( a gun is only as evil as the person using it, much like a hammer or a car).
Its just the fact that you can hit a 3 inch target from 100 meters with open sights. To me its a zen thing.
Like Ive said in another forum, I would not have a problem shooting a person that comes in my home on me, but,, there are still too many inocent people killed by firearms.
Mainly by people that are suposed to be licensed to carry them ( ie cops).
I know what its like to hold someone at gunpoint, been there and did that. The overwhelming feeling that this person is at your mercey, and that you can end a life with the flick of a finger.
But thats no diferent than driving down a street crowded with pedestrians .

ok.. so.. again ::)

It isnt the fealing of power, it isnt the awsome feeling of holding the most evil thing in the world ( a gun is only as evil as the person using it, much like a hammer or a car).

^ No, I totally get that. That's why I posted the bit below earlier. I think some people get mad at gun people, because they think they're hotheads. But people can have 'reverence' for guns on both sides. Both sides realize the awe and responsibility of them. It's just the 'different' thing. I just can't 'do' the gun thing. But that doesn't mean you don't show reverence for the responsibility because you do. It all sort of clicked in a new way when I'd read what you wrote.

And I definitely get the 'precision' thing. I love archery and Kendo. So, I get that whole feel. I just can't handle the gun thing personally.

Guns are just.. awesome, in the sense they ilicit an overwhelming feeling of reverence. But for other people, it's a different kind of reverece. Still respectful, but other people embrace guns. We're al just .. different.

I would have.
I do kendo also,, it helps clear my mind.
People get this kick from trashing gun owners, and making comments about "illeagal" guns.
Myine have allways been legal, and I wish they wouldnt bunch me into the group of criminals they refer too. I find it very offensive.
Not to mention they like to mention all the gun deaths every year when the deaths from car accidents far outweigh the deaths by guns.
If they want to outlaw guns, then they should outlaw cars.
And since many gun deaths are by cops and young wannabee gangbangers, maybe we should outlaw cops and teenagers too while we are at it.
Just trying to make things fare. I want things to be fare.
But,, if we outlaw all guns, what next? Knives? sticks? Sharp pieces of glass?
I just want things to be fare, thats what I want.

Is Kendo better than "Western" sword-fighting?  I've always wondered if a fencer using a sabre, or maybe a rapier, would be able to hold his own against someone using a katana.

I would say Yes, the Katana is better.

A Rapier has a thin blade which uses the point.

A Saber is more a Cavalierly sword which uses the edge.

They are both single handed swords.

A Katana uses both the point and the edge, and it's handle is long so that is can be used with one hand or two.

I have a Bokken (wooden Katana) that I play with.  ;D

I have a boken too,,
I learned kendo over a period of years when my dad was stationed in Japan.
Its more precise than fencing,, and takes alot more concentration. Not to mention every move, position and strike has a specific name and use.
Fencing is just mindless kid games compared to kendo.
My former sensei told me once that back in the 12th century, a kendo master once was able to litteraly cut an oponent with his boken.
Thats impresive, and must have a basis in truth concidering bokens are illeagal to cary in Japan.
I took some fencing in college, and fencing doesnt even compare to kendo.

I think all kinds of sword fighting is cool. Kendo is just completely cool in its own way. And.. I'd say Japanese swords are superior to any. But.. if somone supplied data that said the opposite.. I wouldn't argue. But.. I've seen a few shows on the subject.. and Japanese swords do usually win out.

Most the kendo sticks (Shinai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinai)) I?ve seen and used are strips of bamboo bound together.

One way to score a point is to hit someone on top of the head. At demonstrations it?s funny because the kendo masters usually let their opponents get a free head shot to end the fight. That way they can keep the challenges moving. In real kendo it?s obviously smoother, more equally matched, and more agile >_< But yeah.. in demonstations they just patiently let people bonk them over and over :D

Here?s a pic I took last year that shows how well kendo gear protects from head hits. The person challenging in this pic was a little boy, so the kendo guy got down to his level. It was super cute  I also listed a site that explains points.

In kendo, points are allocated for hits with the shinai on certain target areas of the head and body, the Japanese name for which must be called out as you aim for it. There are five areas:
-dead center on top of the head protector
-slightly left or right on top of the head protector
-throat thrust
-the right wrist
-the chest protector, just under the right arm
The fight lasts for a specified period and is won either when someone reaches two points from hits to the appropriate areas or when the time ends and someone is leading 1-0. The match is declared a draw if the time ends with both players on the same score or the match can be continued until one player scores.
Despite the formality of the bouts, kendo is more than just a sport. It sustains traditions and encourages mental as well as physical strength and dexterity. Clubs are springing up around the world, fascinated with the skill and glamour of this ancient art.

This was a huge spider. And it was causing mass panic at work ::) I tired to pick it up a few times to carry it out. But it kept escaping :(  I really do think spiders are awesome. It just bugs most people to be trapped indoors with them.

I'm totally at a loss about the ladybugs thing though. They're awesome. They're good for plants. And when they land on you they're super pretty and tickle. Plus they're gorgeous.

We don't like the harlequin ladybirds, they're a bit mean towards the native species.  Why did I end up with the room they like to hibernate in! *shakes fist*

I was going to say something about the harlequin variety being invaders from the far east and driving out the natives, but I've seen that joke so many times on the internet.  I wish these too-many-spotted bugs would bugger off! (hurr hurr)

I have this kind of basket attached to my book rack. If you need to carry your dog in one basket, and stuff in the other... it would work well.

Title: Re: I want this...
Post by: Skadi on September 26, 2010, 04:09:36 PM
It all depends on how you position the bungie cords. I've carried all the ingredients to make a full turkey dinner on my bike, I've carried a cheesescake in a snow storm, and this weekend I had one cord positioned to hold a drink cup from McDonalds, and it didn't spill on any of my library books. A muffin would be easy :)

We have an owl that lives somewhere local. When I sit in the back garden watching the bats flying after moths (which I do sometimes when the weather's okay) you sometimes hear the owl hooting. Still on a wildlife theme, my sister found a baby hedgehog in her garden yesterday so left some dog food out for it. It ate it all and was still there this morning so she's decided to hand rear it - not sure that's such a good idea.

Hedgehogs have some bad-ass ticks you know.  I took one home once when I was a kid, by wrapping it up in my jumper.  When I'd let the thing go again in the jumper there were these orange minibeasts that looked very nasty indeed.

The smaller set I just searched is around $500.. how much is that one pictured? I have a nice Bose system at work for the Nano.. but I don't love Bose, plus we can rarely crank things overly loud at work.. so it's sort of a waste to even have it ::)

I'm wanting to venture out into the Mac world and possibly buy a Macbook pro, refurbished of coarse, since Apple has no realistic sense when it comes to the value of money now-a-days.

Finally, after over 5 years I believe (I've been watching their site for at least 4), GScreen got their dual monitor laptop ready and is now shipping:

http://www.gscreenlaptop.com/

I can't get one over here for another 6 months or so, and to be honest I'm a little over it now. The finished unit looks way too chunky to be truly portable although it would be nice to be able to transport and work on a unit that mirrors my desktop, or very nearly as the case may be.

Hehe, I haven't had a "multiple screen" issue with Windows for years and Win7 handles the "on the fly" monitor plugging-in very well now.

The only real issues I've had were with multiple monitors and a "virtual windows manager" app (litevwm or something like that from LiteStep).  I had the virt wins configured in a 2x2 square with the top left being my primary.  Sometimes, when I clicked on the virt wins on the right, the app would shift my primary phys. monitor designation the the phys monitor on the right and any apps that were open in my 2ndary monitor suddenly became lost off screen.  Even killing the the virt win manager wouldn't fix it.  I'd have to click around a bunch between the virt wins until the app got confused again and fixed itself...ah, good times.

That is not a laptop. It is a foldable desktop.

I can't imagine lugging that monstrosity around.

I have 24" screens on my desk at home and at both my workplaces, and carry a 15" laptop - this plugs in to the external screen wherever I may be, to give me two. If I am at another site I either borrow a screen or slum it with the little people that are forced to use one. Even Windows handles multiple screens nearly adequately nowadays.

It really is a monstrosity I agree, and the only reason I can think of why the base is so big, is that it needs extra battery power for the screens.  That reminds me of the first mobile phones that had a huge battery pack you could break your shoulder with. Portable? I think not.

With that said, the idea of dual 17" monitors on a laptop is very sexy and if they ever make an ultra slim version I'd definitely be up for one. I have a triple monitor set up now which I'm finding I use for everything - even just sorting out files and folders.

I don't use Windows for pleasure, so I am not sure how well it works nowadays, but my scenario used to kill XP and Vista: at home my additional monitor sits on the right of my laptop, at work it sits on the left. My mac has always remembered which is which, the PC always got hopelessly lost. Have they fixed that yet?

I can't say I have ever had a problem with Windows organising the monitors, and now windows 7 has the right-click option to move windows to whichever monitor you choose without having to drag them about.

Hmm, don't know about that.  I only use a secondary monitor for my laptop at work and it's always on the right side.  If I think about it when I have my laptop at home (I typically just leave it in the office), I'll connect it to a spare monitor at home and have the 2nd one be on the left.  I'll see how it "copes" when I bring it back in.
Title: Re: I want this...

You may want to check the resolution too, if the home and work monitors are different.

PS: You will note that it was not my intention to belittle Windows, I did note that it was nearly adequate, which is a major improvement over where it was.

Oh, I know you're not a Windows fan, but also not a hater.  It is fun to see you "eff" with people over on Dem though. :D
Title: Re: I want this...

christ is an original mac user from a time when you were firmly in one camp or another. Usually because of the efficiency of the hardware/OS meant that your professional life with an Apple computer was far easier than with the early days of Windows, and because of that I can understand the superiority felt by mac users back then.   Nowadays being a mac fanboy is just en vogue - and slightly annoying.
Title: Re: I want this...
Post by: smokester on February 03, 2012, 09:18:49 AM
Pshaw.

Fanboys are a pain in the arse, whatever their flavour.

Personally I find Windows' fanboys to be considerably worse than Mac's, as in most cases mac users/fans have experience of Windows (granted, not always recent), and reasoning behind their decision: the VAST majority of Windows fanboys are mac-haters with no direct knowledge but a shitpotfull of hearsay reasoning, and their "logic" was untrue when it was applicable, which is 10-20 years ago. Amusingly I see the same with iOS/ Android, iTunes/anything and iPod/others: "Apple created it, Apple creates toys, therefore it is poo". Most of the time, this reasoning is balls.

Whilst that is true in the infantility of these red versus blue arguments, I do think that Windows fanboys exist in a retaliatory sense - there is no question that Mac users started it whether they are right or not. I am stuck with what I know now and that's that, but it does not mean I do not see the superiority of other platforms like OSX or Linux. On a professional level Windows is still banging square pegs into round holes, it's just that modern versions of the OS come with a much bigger hammers.

Without pointing fingers: what, precisely, is the benefit of the Android software licensing arrangement to the average phone user? The software licensing agreement is of precisely zero interest to 99.99% of the tens of millions of non-programmer phone users out there, but it is still used as the primary discriminator - "iOs isn't Open Source, ergo anyone with any sense should avoid it".

I have found that increasingly, young computer users are far, far more interested in programming than they have ever been.  Probably because if you understand your OS's code you can then knock up an app that could make you some money, or just get you some kudos that is equally if not more important at that age.  It used to be a nerds realm (no offence) but now it too is becoming fashionable.  I expect my son to be able to code by the time he's 15, which will be about 20 years before I can.

(If I were a moderator, not that I have any experience in that persuasion, I may consider that this is thread-jacking)

That's only a problem if someone complains (that isn't the thread-jacker), and you know the pleasant and understanding bunch that we have here

If your life is anything like a Steven Seagal movie, you can end up just watching the opening and closing credits.

I used to be nicknamed Nico after that film came out.

Seagal used to be the genuine article but he has made so many ridiculous movies (if you can call them that) after turning into a doughnut, that he has lost just about all his credibility.

You should be able to acheive something similar with bent steelwork and welds. You'd have to prime and paint as it would tarnish otherwise, and as for cost, if you chatted up a local metalworks I doubt it would cost that much.

That stair is of cast and wrought iron.  I don't know that much about steel, except that it might be harder to work.

That's exactly what my father told me! So far I've found tons of Spanish colonial pieces but not what I'm looking for. I've yet to talk to the man who could do it. Maybe I shouldn't lose hope yet.

I'd prefer a 17" screen but Apple has phased them out. I know the resolution makes up for it, but that requires eyesight way better than mine. Size matters, so to speak.

The other thing that is a bit disconcerting is the ungodly price they ask for them.

They were considering making cyclists subject to dangerous driving laws. I'm not sure whether they shelved that or not or even abandoned it altogether.

They should definitely find in favour of it:

I waver both sides, cyclists get a lot of hassle, cyclists give a lot of hassle.
Workmate I sometimes cycle with is so aggressive towards drivers, followed him to work and a taxi stopped on the cyclist lane - he hit the taxi and verbally abused the driver, i felt so ashamed.
One of the safe designated cycling routes to my work (bikes painted on road ?) also is on the driving test route you can imagine the trouble cyclists have on that route  :o :o
Better thought out road systems are the way to go.

Cyclists and drivers would get along fine if cyclists obeyed the highway code - but they don't, not a one of them.

There are of course and many idiots on 4 wheels that don't give a crap about motoring courtesy, but hopefully when ANPR is rolled out on mass (for ULEZ) a lot of people will have to clean up their act.

"Thou shalt not drive thy knackered old vincent black shadow in Ken's exclusion zone" doesn't quite have the right ring about it.

One wonders if dinosaurs had invented the internal combustion engine and polythene if they would have successfully dominated the planet for 100 million years, when humans can barely make 10,000 without trying to wipe themselves out.

Funny that in the U.S., we call it polyethylene.  It's what Tupperware is made of.  And it's sort of comical that the fuel we use to run those IC engines is basically composed of rotted dinosaurs.

I thought it was mostly plankton? And the dinosaur thing is one of those things we learn in school that is actually made up, like the pilgrims being nice people?

I looked it up.  You're right:  phytoplankton & zooplankton (some plankton are plants and others animals, apparently) are most likely the source.

Having never met pilgrims, I wouldn't know, but they seemed pretty devout and restrictive, so I'm pretty sure I would not find them particularly fun to hang out with.

There's a book, lies my teachers told me. I don't know how much of it is reactionary cowpoo, but it was both amusing and horrifying to read the "real" story about the pilgrims. They ate dead people!

I want a decent pot pie. I used to buy the Banquet frozen ones, but first the meat disappeared, then the veggies, and finally it was more of a broth pocket.

The grocery shrink ray is truly evil.

I used to make pot pies.  I'd make a big batch of dough and roll it out, layering it with wax paper, until I assembled the pies.  I had a bunch of those little individual aluminum pie pans.  I used three fillings:  I'd use leftover rotisserie chicken, cut into cubes, & would make a basic white sauce (butter, flour & half & half or milk), and sauté some diced onions, celery, carrots & mushrooms with some frozen peas.  I'd layer these into the bottom pie shell, and then cover it with the second, poking holes in the top.  These freeze well and take about 45 minutes to bake (from freezer to table).  They're so good.  I'd make a ton of them at once, & freeze them, as they were so labor intensive.  But they beat the pants off anything you can get at the store.

What do you look for in a wetsuit? Every brand I've bought but Bodyglove have been poo, and my summer suit vanished in a move. The price doesn't look too bad from a quick googs.

The PSP 3000, Eh, I bought one but rarely used it. Loved the 2001 model for it's mod ability and the 1000 was just as moddable. I think I played more Pokémon on those two then I ever did on a Nintendo console :P

3000 somehow stimied me as far as getting it set up, but talking about THAT would probably be frowned on. I know you posted about it quite a time ago, but PSP's tend to sit on shelves quite nicely, don't they?

Body boarding - not too fussed about / Sea swimming+gorge walking+Cliff jumping (not too high)+wild river walking and if it comes about We are trying to Kayak the grand Caledonian canal so would take for a Loch swim.

Good idea Six. I'm going to steal this idea from you. I normally cook big and put into small containers then into the freezer. When I hit the road, I grab 2 or 3 (normally, I'll have a variety of choices), with a few bottles of water, into the cooler then out the door. I also fill a large thermos with coffee.

1st snes soundtracks
2nd -delay-  "detachable penis"
3rd PHASER

The majority of what he says is a foreign language to me.

You could certainly sweep Adult Swim's anime jazz.

When he gets into the guitars I hear Akira yamaoka. Silent hill sounds

Rock snare is straight up Duke3D

Yeah, come get some!

Power rock took me back to the 80's.

Push it to the limit!

Okay, now we're going vampire with the organ. No cruel angel's thesis? WEAK

That video is unavailable.

That piece of kit is all that and then some. I know that outboard is really old hat these days, but you're always going to need a controller so why not have one that is primary to a workstation rather than the other way round.

My mom despises him.

I had loaded up a video about when the recording industry attempted to pivot to SD cards, they made a screenless mp3 player that I found interesting, so I was sharing it with her, and she absolutely lost it.

Was pretty funny to watch.

I really enjoyed his prison tech video, and his practicality. He doesn't suggest people go out and buy an original blue walkman, like the youtube clickbait teenagers, he surveys a range and explains how to check a used device to see if it actually works.

My favorite video of his was one where he got a tape deck out of a japanese market, and figured out the voltage the device required was different from what it was getting, rendering most of the music "haunting" is a good word?

I have a YouTube channel! If you look closely you can spot a theme.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI7s3gARp0hOs37Q7ni-Nsg

There's a guy on youtube who covers, bit by bit, Interstate 95 but without the musical accompaniment.  I think I'd be more likely to take a nap watching the I-95 series.  This part of Virginia is pretty but boring.

There is real value in videos like that, while they may not be the most exciting thing ever, they are a snapshot of a time and a place.

I once managed to date the fixtures in an apartment thanks to a 1985 horror movie. So many of the details just matched. (I had to order the shower door handle off ebay because they DO NOT MAKE THOSE anymore.)

The metal had cleanly snapped and was just lying in the tub. Far less exciting than the ghost murder in the movie.

I think I posted about it here, the Home depot employee I asked for help laughed and said "You won't find that poo in this town".

He was right.

Sadly his words were prophetic, I often have to make quite a drive or order online when I want things. Even our Walmart is barebones, and I thought they all went off a template.

I'm amazed that the Home Depot guy knew enough.

I just restored another lamp and just buying routine parts required me to go to a mom & pop hardware store, since the only sockets HD had were in Liberace fake gold that was so tacky I'd have had to spray paint it just to tone it down enough that it wouldn't make us want to run the other way.  I paid a bit more, but I got what I needed and they had more of a selection.  Since the HD owner likes to send money to Trump, I'm as happy as I can be when I can avoid giving him any more.
