Title: A film that you WISH was worth watching but is SO not.
Post by: ohcheap1 on June 25, 2009, 11:50:31 PM
If I ever find a job I will donate a portion of my income to the remaking of Terminator 4. Geesh....what crap!! And yet SO much potential. I would imagine that the script was decent but the film interuptation was poo!! I am so sad.  Hopefully, some of you will feel different but I would think it very doubtful.

And here is the pending question: Why in the hell was Christian Bale cast in this role? WHY!!! Im asking you? I just need a reasonable answer.  :'(

I don't see why are you so surprised!
I have always said that any Terminator after the second one is doomed to be bad....

Well I dont agree with that either but it had SO much potential.....it just kills me that someone with alittle background knowledge of the story couldnt of directed it.

Amen.  ;)

You only really need to watch the first 2.

James Cameron did an excellent job of ending the story in T2, which is why the sequels following it are completely ridiculous.

I despised T3 (oh, look, it has tits this time!) so I won't go anywhere near T4.

Good to see you over here Red.  :)

I like a good zombie flick.

But Platoon of the Dead isn't one.

Land of the Lost.

The special effects were good, but that was all. I had a half-hearted laugh at one scene. Very disappointed.

Am I the only one that likes Cage's movies  :'(
It is Bangkok Dangerous and I thought it was fun... not good fun but just fun....

As for the remake, it is The day the Earth stood still. I refuse watching it. Watch the original. It is very good for its time. The special effects obviously suck, but it is a great movie. Along with Forbidden Planet, is my favorite 50s sci-fi flick.

Face-Off
It was on tv a while back, the dialogue was so bad I couldn't make it past the first ten minutes.

Pertaining to National Treasure, when I pointed out Nicholas Cage's granddad was Christopher Plummer, my friend was like "NO WAY!!" repeatedly. She couldn't believe that was Capt von Trapp ::)
Also, Diane Kruger is far too hot for Nic Cage (strangely he resembles John Travolta, hairline especially).

I wanted to love HP6, I really did. But the ending was poo. So yea whatever.

I never have special expectation for those big-blockbusters-special-effects movies, especially if they are sequels. I admit I enjoyed T1 and T2 (the others i haven't seen  ;D). I've watched Transformers the other night while playing here in the forum. UMBEARABLE. Other movie in this same line that could've been better is Hancock. I've seen it on TV without even knowing what it was about and kinda enjoy the first half. The second half is downright BAD.

I don't like it when films do that, they start off really well and then they start falling in love or something.  I can't think of any examples to support this, but I'm sure I've seen it happen often.

Did you know that the original director for Hancock was fired in the middle of shooting the film and the direction was taken over by someone else?

I'll bet that helps explain that sudden change in the second half, eh?  :D

and the National Treasure movies?

i liked the first one ok.. haven't seen the second

and.. Raising Arizona.. Vampire's Kiss is good in a weird way. ..Leaving Las Vegas is well done. and, I want to to dislike Moonstruck because it's a little to corny romance/comedy for me ..but I've watched it more then once.. it's the wackiness of his character that pushes it over into an unconvenional love story.. and makes it less sugary.

Nicolas Cage isn't such a good actor but was really good in Leaving Las Vegas.

LOL.. I think he makes it better.. because he's so weird.. but earnest. Espeically th 'I lost my hand' line  :D It tosses it over to the 'unconventional love story' angle for me. I think I must have weird taste in love stories >_<

I liked District 9.
I reminded me of alot of the South African problemswhen I was in high school.
Plus it was pretty realistic about how humans would treat aliens  if they came here.
Its not for everyone,, but I thought it was a good effort.

Just got that haven't watched it yet. I used to work with a couple of guys who worked out in South Africa in the 70's and 80's. They had some scary story's to tell.  :(

As much as I wanted to, I really didn't like 9 (not to be confused with either District 9 or the Fellini remake Nine [November 2009, y'all!])...

[I'll try to keep spoilers to a minimum, but you've been warned. ;D]

The story doesn't really hold together and a lot of stuff didn't add up. The relationship between the little numbered doll people, the evil AI (that becomes self aware and... well, you can prolly guess where this is going...) and the human scientists that created them both wasn't very well thought out. It's apparently the film expansion of a short subject, so maybe that explains some things, but still...

Spoiler (hover to show)

The voice actors didn't so much become the characters as much as just lend their voices. Does that make sense?

And it isn't for kids, period. It's a lot darker than the apocalypse that befell Earth in WALL?E and there are some rough moments of machines decimating people. There were a few groups of parents in the theatre when we got there, but as soon as
Spoiler (hover to show)
a parent leaves with their kids. When 9 discovers
Spoiler (hover to show)
another set gets up to leave. And these last 2 scenes are maybe 5-8 minutes in...

Unless you've got a really mature kid, you might wanna pass on this one...

And it almost seemed like they got Tim Burton and Danny Elfman just to lend their names to the thing. Burton is just exec-producing (he's busy with Alice) and Elfman came up with the 'themes' and someone else composed the score. So they aren't quite as involved as the filmmakers are trying to imply.

The visuals are decent, but even they get a little tedious when the entire world is a smoking crater and everything's wrapped in burlap.

Spoiler (hover to show)

Not that it's a complete piece of poo or anything, it's just very unsatisfying... :-\

i rented Bloom Brothers, Away We Go, Transformers 2,Drag Me to Hell.

Bloom Brothers was okay I really liked Rachel Weisz boots. The movie started out pretty good and middle wasnt bad but towards the end i lost focus and I didn't understand the whole ending. I wonder what happened to Bang Bang and I thought Rachel Weisz  character was coning the blooms.

Away We Go. was another okay movie  that i expected more from , but there were some funny moments.

Transformers felt like it was really really really really long for no reason at all.

Drag me to hell was funny/ gross at the same time.

I liked Next.
You ought to see Deja Vu,,, nice twist at the end,,kinda predictable once you see it,, but all in all a good movie.

I liked Sam Raime till I saw Drag Me To Hell.
I think he has the same problem as Wes Craven, its either good or very bad.

M Night Shyamalin disapointed me sooooo much with Lady in the Water and that fiasco he did recently about the trees getting revenge on humans.
The Sixth Sense wasnt bad, and Signs ROCKED.
I dont know what to think about the other one he did about the people in the comune.
It was so bad I forgot the name of it.

Sorry!  But apart from the CGI Terminator 2 was crap,it was made into a 15 for the masses for $'s.
The 1st was a straight to VHS release as they thought it'd flop.
It was also an 18,and the best in my opinion.

I liked the story in Terminater 4.
There are going to be 2more in that series.
They could have done 2 and 3 together and made both better in one movie.

A movie that I thought was crap was queen of the Damned.
I wish they didnt wreck the story.
It had elements of The Vampire Lestat ( which were wrong for the most part, Lestat was turned by a vampire in Paris, not Marius).
And alot to do with Maharat and her family was wrong.
Akasha was wrong, so was the concert, and they didnt even go into what was happening with the vamps around the world or the history of Akasha and Enkhil.
I thought it would be worth watching, but as usual WRONG!!!!!
As for Twilight and its afterbirth Moonlight,, I got to say that the whole series ( books even) are a bunch of Emo tripe.

I'm pretty sure it's not the emo kids hot over twilight >_<

It's more the Hannah Montana and Highschool Musical kids. The tweens and near tweens that think they're ready for something grittier. Or, that's who it's being hard marketed to right now. That's why you see so much merchandise surrounding it in the kid's Borders section. And at ToysRus, and Hot Topic.

It's weird that so many books get jacked when it comes to the movie. Supposedly 'cirque du freak' is suffering the same problems. The difference though is it doesn't have the movie star 'crush' momentum to make people see it regardless.

Im tired of the "Style over substance" movies.
Thats why I stick with the lesser known horror movies.
They have to try to make it a good story.
Last time I saw a good story with a chick magnet type actor and big budget special effects was Daredevil.

I hate when awesome things that hardly anybody knows about fall into the mainstream and become targeted to the type of people that only like it for being popular not because they stood by in before it hit the spotlight. lame. :P

Word brotherman.

Like Zombie movies. Theyre going mainstreem and now you see people that didnt know what Night of the Living Dead was a aweek ago acting like they been watching for years.

I remember when the Vampire thing happened back in the mid 90s,, seems everyone wanted to be one, even though a few months earlier they thought it was gross.

I read that the Nightmare On Elm Streat is being remade.
I read upon it, and found out that its actualy going to be a better story than the original.
Its got a better budget, and its not written or directed by Wes Craven, so it ought to be good . :P

And,,,any of the Hellraiser movies after number 2

I just saw Pandorum.
Dont bother,,its bad,,
Week acting,, uncomfortable to watch, and so dirivitive that Riddly Scott should have sued for something.

Another bad movie was ( which I thought would be good) AVP Requiem.
This was a colosal effort put forth by two people that,up until that movie, only made videos for MTV.
Maybe if they had Beonce or P Diddy in it , and only made it 5 minutes long, they might have had somthing they could have handled.
And if you want to see a lame sequel,,check out 2005s The Crow:Wicked Prayor.
I am a big fan of The Crow and the following two movies,,but the fourth was,,well,,..
Let me put it this way,, mix Michael Borneaz( Angel) with Dennis Hopper as a hip hop satanist, and that kid from Terminater 2, and its,,I cant describe how bad it was.
I got it for my bday back in 2005, so I cant just take it out and destroy it with high velocity projectiles,,but I can tell people how bad it was.
If you have a choice between watching this movie and going down in a burning aircraft,,just do yourself a favor and go down in the damn plane!
I had to shove pencils into my ears ,,,it was much less painfull ( Opera calls that empowerment).

Robert Rodriguez of  Desperado fame is directing the next Predator film.
Im hoping it'll be good, perhaps set in the past.
Remember Harrigan being presented with a 1715 flintlock pistol in the 2nd one.

I'll just youtube that part, and skip the rest :D

I saw lots of clips when it first came out. But I skipped the movie. Movies that I hear really bad things about I don't want them to ruining the rest of a series for me, or a book.. I try to avoid those bad ones if I can.

The new one is going to have more to do with the Predater society and other alien races in it.
Knowing Rodriguez,is going to be over the top action andlots ofkilling,,just the way I like to see his movies.

The new Alien is suposed to take place thiry years BEFORE the first movie, and Ridley Scott is doing it.
Its more about the Jockey ( the alien body in the first movie) and its race and how they use the Aliens to take over a world and then use a toxin to kill them off. Kinda like Alien Bio warfare.
 Thats the skinny though,,

From what Ive read its suposed to be pretty much spot on.
They want to go more into the space battlesequences though,,but as long as they get the story right.
Did you know the original story was suposed to be made for teenagers?
Title: Re: A film that you WISH was worth watching but is SO not.
Post by: Skadi on November 13, 2009, 10:41:39 AM
^ That makes sense.. it sort of suits that frame of mind. Some readers might get hung up on the pacing of it, so.. I can see how some teens might have dumped it before finishing it. But, that's when I read it, I was around 15. Im worried enough abut the story.. But, I'd be equally worried (or more worried) about getting the emotion to come across. It's got a certain profound depth of feeling to it that has to be gotten down correctly.

I never watch disaster films, willingly. What's the point?
OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! I NEED TO CONSIDER THE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF STEALING THIS CAR! BUT SERIOUSLY, WHAT ARE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF STEALING A CAR?! I'M NEVER GONNA SURVIVE BECAUSE THE WORLD IS IMPLODING! BUT THEN OMG BY THE END OF THE DISASTROUS (OMG PUNNY!) 104 MINUTES, WE'RE ALIVE. HOLLYWOOD IS BANKING ON A SEQUEL. SEQUELS FTW. THIS IS HOW I GET $34M PER SHITTY MOVIE.

^ Shaun of the Dead :D ..seriously. Unexpected weird disasters like that are interesting.

Sad disasters that I don't want to think about...? I'd just rather watch on NatGeo.

And as far as 2012? ..i've read stories/books I thought would be more interesting then this release.
Title: Re: A film that you WISH was worth watching but is SO not.

Well, 2012 starts out okay, and they try to have a sense of story and logic, but there is a definite line of demarcation where it's pretty clear the flimmakers just said "golly it" and the whole movie turns into a bigger mess than Roland Emmerich has ever produced before (and he's made some seriously shitty movies).

John Cusack's reticence about accepting the role starts showing through his acting ability. He literally has a "what-am-I-doing-in-this-movie?" expression for about the last half of the film - which is a whopping 2 hours and 40 minutes long. After they'd already destroyed the entirety of civilization, and when what's left of humanity gets to the 'special destination', I looked at my watch and there was still at least another 40 goddamn minutes of the movie left! But don't worry, they filled it with one of the cheesiest, most implausible moments of tension ever put to film.

We sneaked into The Fourth Kind afterward and it was a masterpiece by comparison...  :D

Actually, The Fourth Kind had some really creepy things in it...

^ they're getting about the same ratings, you might have been to see the other one ;D

..speaking of aliens..  even though I was iffy about some parts of Whitley Strieber's version of 2012.. in most ways it would have made a more interesting movie then the one that's out.

And... speaking of books.. I want to see The Road, but I want to read the book this week before I go see it. I'd include post-apocalyptic movies as disaster films. It's the mess after the diaster.. which is just as interesting as the disaster itself.

The International is a a film that I wish was worth watching but is so not actually worth watching. I thought Clive Owen + Naomi Watts + Tom Tykwer = AWESOME! :)
BUT NO. Sorry, Gee, I found it totally flat, and at the end you just sit there and say "What the golly just happened??" The plot was thin. REAL THIN.

^It's just completely incoherent. You know, you'd think that there is a moral behind the story at the end, but all you get from it is confusion. I guess action buffs would watch it for the shootout, but I bet you can just watch it on youtube.
