Title: Programs that make you go...grrr
Post by: Diabolico on October 07, 2009, 09:52:37 AM
Been trying for some hours to run two versions of PHP (PHP4.34 and PHP5.30), tried to manually update the httpd.conf file, used the PHP5.30 installer, didn't work. This way would of used a subdomain for one of the versions of PHP, thou it wouldn't start with no errors.

Installed Wamp, switched the services; I think the installation is borked. PHP isn't parsing the code.

What program or service makes you go...grrr?

What program or service makes you go...grrr?

All of them at some time or another.

Is it me, or is MySql a fricking pain? Removed Apache, PHP, MySql, Wamp, then did a fresh install of Wamp with some add-ons (PHP 4.3.9, Apache 2.0.63, MySql 4.1.22). Then got a multitude of MySql Errors as usual (access denied, old_password etc).

All of them at some time or another.

;D

I run Wamp on another machine (purely local stuff) and have 8 localhost subdomains running SMF for testing purposes.  I am not sure what versions are running and I'll check later, but I didn't have to tweak anything for it to work?

MySql must just hate me. Have gotten the same error every other time I have installed MySql, its to do with the password hashing I believe. The password just needed updating using CMD.

Code: [Select]
UPDATE mysql.user SET PASSWORD password = old_password('<insert new password>') WHERE user = '<insert username>' AND HOST = '<insert host>';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Localhost ftw  >_>

Internet Explorer annoys me a lot.  Opening a new tab takes ages.  I can't use the internet without having at least 6986 tabs open.

I really despise the new interface for Reason 4.

I also hate Riva's FLV encoder.  As many times as I've tried to install and re-install it, all I get is this poo

Internet Explorer 8 seems unstable. More problems with MySql, somehow the password was removed, then got the dreaded:

Code: [Select]

Nero ruined my file associations (and their icons).  I really need to deal with that.

I don't like it when programs steal focus.  Lots of Microsoft software programs do this especially when I'm entering text.

I've got Photoshop CS3

Lynda has a range of tutorials, usually they are in *.mov format, so you have the option of using Lynda or a media player. They go from the basics of the navigation. There's two executables (FullScreenMode and WindowMode), usually they come with exercise files.

There should be some on Noid and you should be able to find them on Google ;).

I use PS CS4, skipped CS2 and CS3.

For layers, there is a palette called layers (Window > Layers), top right corner for options like create new layer. At the bottom of that palette there are some buttons for other options like create folder, mask.

Let's not forget our very own resource (http://www.diasfora.co.uk/index.php?topic=1444.0) thread.

I personally use CS3 for its 3D functionality, but I much preferred my old version 7.

The version of Paint in Windows 7 irritates me.  It blurs the edges of the strokes you make with the brush, so changing the colours gives everything an outline.

It also makes me feel myopic :(

At least Photoshop has the option to turn the anti-aliasing paintbrush off.

Everytime I press the num lock or scroll lock button, this comes up:
I don't need it, there's a light for it!

I'd turn it off, except it's part of one of those annoying programs laptop vendors insist you install to get the Fn keys working.  My IBM T22 (which was awesome) didn't need extra programs to get the Fn keys working,  it really irritates me other laptops don't do this!

I know a person with a Dell machine which has something similar, except it shows up in the lower right-hand side of the screen.  Every time he presses caps-lock, GTA: Vice City crashes :D

Apparently, after 72 hours of not using it, your profile will be removed, but they won't remove your username:

Windows 7, feels like a step back in some areas (with a lot of eye candy to make up for it). Photoshop CS5 is much faster than the previous version; Dreamweaver CS5 is a bit of a let down (not that much different from the previous version).

Haven't used Skype for months, my account is still active :-S.

PS using Windows 7 on netbook (1024x600 resolution), is there a way to reduce the size of the icons on the desktop?

Windows 7 annoys me sometimes, it's like they have only one option a page.  It wants everything to be big, I don't like big!

The search in the Start menu is a bit stoopid as well.  Oh well, at least the UAC it easier to control.

PS using Windows 7 on netbook (1024x600 resolution), is there a way to reduce the size of the icons on the desktop?
If you have a wheel mouse, then on the desktop you would pres the CTRL key and use the mouse wheel to change the size of the icons.  There was another way, but I can't find it :'(

There is an option when you right click the desktop (small, medium and large). Also under customising the theme, there is the old menu for changing the colours.

Gotta get the other thing sorted ::)

Today, I found this: http://www.bing.com/rewards/

And I've been using IE9 since yesterday.  It's terrible.  It's faster than IE8, but after a few hours of having it on, it became a bit slow.  It may be because I'm switching between browsers (too lazy to type in my passwords) and the other browser (Opera) is very fast.

But, I get exchange them bing points for some microsoft points, at least I hope I can :-\

Wiped clean the hdd but when you uninstalled VBox you could access the data on the hdd again?!?!  Maybe the VM in Vbox just stole the hdd connection and locked it so it couldn't be accessed by any device other than the VM?  Not sure though, just guessing.

a small box appears when you open the belkin manager with all the attached usb devices inside of it.
when vbox was installed the  Belkin hub center lost all the devices inside of it.

when i uninstalled vbox.
i again could access all the attached devices.
after a couple of reinstalls i narrowed it down to this.

Ah, so it does sound like to me that the VM was "stealing" the connection to it and locking it so that only it could use it.  You should be able to go into the VM (either in the VM OS or the VM Settings) and tell it not to use it anymore.  After that it should be visible to your host OS again.

It's neither there or in the Start menu :-\.  I've been meaning to run the installer again, I'm just kind of lazy :(.

I don't like Steam, it's slow and annoying.  It's even more annoying in Linux with Wine, because it likes to jump around when you drag it across the screen.  Setting Wine to use Windows 7 mode adds a title-bar, which works a lot better, but sometimes accidentally drag using the Steam window.

I don't like it when they make everything big.  I thought it'd be fun to try out WindowMaker-crm, a forked version of WindowMaker that has some more modern features.  It seemed to install OK, but wouldn't start up.  It managed to modify the WindowMaker config files OK, which was nice at first.  The problem is that all the menu entries for xterm used switches that make the window large and the font massive.  I don't like that!  I am glad I backed up my original configuration files, I usually wouldn't do that  ;D

Lots of stuff seems to have larger buttons and text recently, it's annoying on my 17" laptop screen.  I notice it less in Windows.  When I'm using something in Wine, everything looks nice (except Steam, it's stupid) and all the icons are small and compact.

Maybe I'm picking all the wrong settings.  The Xfe file manager has a kind of compact UI, I just get annoyed with no auto-complete.

time for a change of managers i think.

I'm after a Kvm switch for 2 desktop pc's on one monitor.

main pc runs Windows 7 ( which i believe can mess with  kvm switches)

the second will run a linux set up using onboard graphic's.
both will connect via a monitor cable.

On my telephone, I don't like the programs "Cell standby" and "Phone idle".  Together they use up 80% of my battery power.  "Voice calls" is a bit annoying as well, it used 21% of my battery, that's 1% more than the full capacity of the battery.  Damn bloat.

Outlook takes decades to load up.

try viber?
I needed Skype mainly because my mobile phone provider was offering free Skype communications.  Nobody is on Skype any more, everybody I know has more free minutes than they can use up now.  I've used Fring, but not Viber.

I used to have issues with flash making it freeze, but then I saw a web page (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1908377) that said to disable the ipc thing in about:config.

I find a lot of the KDE programs are slow.  It's really annoying, because they look so much better :(

uTorrent really pisses me off.  First one machine and now this one is grinding to a virtual halt when I run UT in the background.

I have used Tribler for a few D/loads, easy to set up and run plus not too demanding
BUT unless I missed something in the instructions, it scans tinternet not particular sites ,you don't get full info on the torrent and post d/load passwords are sometimes required and fake files download.
Similar to the old limewire I'm afraid

Can you not just alter the setting's / upgrade to newer version. Which i suppose you have done already.

As soon as i can work out what KVM switch I can use with Windows 7, I am going to use an old machine running linux for my torrents. I like Transmission.

Apparently it's a common problem and not that easily fixed.

All programs that reportedly convert to SMV.  Out of the 3 that I downloaded, one didn't support the format, 1 crashed immediately, and the last kept saying "conversion failed"?!!

Anyone know of a reliable SMV converter?

Does Super work?  It used to support everything.
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

The download link is all the way at the bottom.

Once, I had a dodgy video that would only play in Windows Media Player, and I managed to convert it using an Avisynth script and Virtualdub.  Have you tried that?  I think there may be some learning involved, I haven't used it in a long time.

Also, check out the screenshots on this site:

Thanks Chek.  I tried to get Super last night but kept getting sent from one piece of bogus software to the next.  I have managed to find the link to the software now and am downloading it as we speak.

The files have to be SMV for my GoGear Vibe (128 x128px) and all I really want on it is some music vids to watch on trains and buses etc.

Tonight maybe I'll have better luck.
