I saw them live 1/12/06 at Nottingham Arena, awesome show.
Some of the tracks sounded better live, the mark of a good band.

I used to love TOOL.
They were a smart, creative and talented band that only got better when you saw them perform the tunes live. The depth of meaning in Maynard's lyrics was astonishing, and life-altering.
I've seen them live a total of 15 times between 1996 and 2006. The first show I ever saw was in December '96 and they had an intermission in which they played the not-seen-outside-of-Hollywood-elite Jesus vs. Santa South Park short. They also had the guy who does the voice for Die Eier Von Satan actually do the song live - in full chef's get-up and everything. I even saw them once at UC San Diego for $18 (!). I even went to a couple shows where King Crimson opened for them...
But then they waited for 5 years after Lateralus to put out 10,000 Days which is a a bubbling cauldron of liquid poo.
I tried as much as I could to not download the record before seeing them perform it live at Coachella in 2006, but I read a review that got the better of me. There were false rumors that TOOL had deliberately created a fake album by chopping up the riffs from the last three and having Maynard sing some cowpoo lyrics over the music. Many people were relieved believing that what they'd downloaded wasn't the new album they were hoping TOOL was going to release.
So I had to check it out for myself. And sure enough the record did indeed sound like it was created by chopping up the riffs from the last three albums and having Maynard sing some cowpoo lyrics over the music. For instance start up Vicarious, but start singing the lyrics to Schism, you'll find they fit pretty well and the songs are very similar. Then I saw them at Coachella and the songs they played live sounded just like the record, so it was the official release - this is also the last time I paid to see them live.
But then again, I'm a self-important prick (and a racist pedophile, too - don't forget that!), so you should just ignore this.
I'm such a richard, in fact, that I inadvertently ended up having as my favorite track from that album the song 10,000 Days, which anyone who likes the album tells me is their least favorite track. ::)
In fact, OC1, my shirt would be more accurate if it said Radiohead on it... ;D

Talk about telling it like it is. You'll definitely never get splinters in your arse by sitting on the fence. :D
I've never heard this album, but your description it really tempting me to dl it. ;D

10,000 Days is a good album,well i think so.
The 1st album i heard was Lateralus and then ?nima.
Undertow i heard last,my fave track on Undertow's Sober.
My fave album is Lateralus, but when it comes down to it they're all good.
Their lyrics are brilliant.
Not to forget the music's awesome too
Tool is pure inner strength and human wisdom manifested in musical form.

And I'm totally glad you dig it, and I would not want you any other way. ;D

My first was Undertow, but I didn't fall in love with them until ?nima, that record is amazing beyond words.
And I've heard Sober quite enough, thank you. :D I put it in the same category with Radiohead's Creep, that I just wish something else was playing. KROQ has played those two tracks to death.
Their lyrics are brilliant.
Yes, they certainly can be. When I mentioned that their stuff could be life-altering, one of the things I meant was taking some of their lyrics and applying them to one's life...
Forty-Six & 2
I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own confused
And insecure delusions
A peace to cross me over
Or a word to guide me in.
I wanna feel the changes coming down.
I wanna know what I've been hiding in
My shadow.
Change is coming through my shadow.
My shadow's shedding skin
I've been picking
My scabs again.
H.
And the snake is drowned
And as I look into his eyes,
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I could have cried then.
I should have cried then.
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.
Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this stupid poo
The Patient
And if there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away
By now
And I still may.
There's more obviously, but we could be here all day... :D

I think more accurately, they are an avenue to inner strength and human wisdom manifested in musical form. One must still explore themselves to obtain the experience, you won't become strong or wise from simply listening to the music (as numerous fans of theirs illustrate at every one of their concerts I've ever been to).

Precisely!

Undertow was the first one i had and fell in love with them
Aenema was just pure fracking genius!
I concider those two to be thier best.
Sober and Prison Sex will allways have a place in my heart. I discovered them at a really badpoint in my life and just the way the music sounded on Undertow kinda reflected how my emotions were and how i felt as a person.
It was a very dificult time for me, and Tool kinda reflected my life back to me in a way that made me understand who I was and where I should go as a person.
I know it sounds weird, but Sober reflected the things I was thinking of, and made it possible to understand what had happend and how it affected me.
Thanks to that album I crawled out of a deep dark hole that seems to have no bottom.
Well, them and Gwar.
-
Try Lateralus next if you haven't already heard it,it's an amazing almost seamless album.
No1 in my book ?nima's no2.
-
Will do
-
They're all good.
Undertow too,i love Sober, Prison Sex,Undertow,4o and Disgustipated always brings a smile to my face.
-
