The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor"
But worse than that were the really poor  folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot..........they "didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell . .. . Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies.. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!"

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your n ice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way. Hence: a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial.. Theywere laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer...

And that's the truth...Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !

One way to tell large kangaroos apart is by their noses. A wallaroo's nose has a large black bare patch around it. A red kangaroo has a smaller, boomerang-shaped black bare patch on its nose. The gray kangaroo has bare narrow bands around the nostrils and the rest of the nose is covered in hair.

Nah, I wish.  It's because they no longer have gravity weighing down and compressing their spine so the vertebrates are able to spread out a bit.

It's the same reason you are taller in the morning (assuming you sleep at night) than you are before you lay down to bed, for as you go throughout your day, every step is compressing your spine a little at a time but when you lay down, the effect of gravity on your spine is severally lessened and the vertebrates spread out again.

Coral reefs are colonies of micro creatures named pollups, little hair-like things that live on the top layer of the coral. The coral grows because when one generation dies they leave behind a hard, stony, branching structure made of limestone which later generations call home.

Every culture has its legends of Vampires.
No matter how far removed they are from another people, they all have similar accounts of blood sucking undead.

In the original story of Frankenstein by Mary Wolstencraft Shelly, Frankenstein was the name of the doctor, not the monster. The monsters name was Adam.

The original name for Frankenstein was The Modern Prometheus.

Originaly , Vampires turned into wolves,, not bats.
Many vampire and werewolf legends ended up getting entertwined because of this.

Legends of vampires turning to bats didnt happen till Columbus discovered blood drinking bats in the new world.

The actual term Zombie comes from the Swahili word Zuvembe, meaning servant.

It got the name "Fat Tuesday" because it is always the day before Ash Wednesday, which starts off Lent and the fasting.  So people would fill up on food, wine, debauchery, etc because they knew starting the next day, they had 40 days of fasting.

When having a baby, if the mother's blood type is rhesus negative and the baby has inherited rhesus positive blood type from the father, the mismatch of blood types can sometimes cause your body to produce antibodies which attack the baby's red blood cells.

This condition can be easily treated by having an anti-D injection straight after giving birth. This simple and effective treatment destroys any of the potentially harmful antibodies, and is effective in 99% of cases.

WTF is soccer.
We invented it,it's called football. ;)

Our "football" is technically called Association football and over a hundred years ago we (with a penchant for making up slang words for things) started calling it "soccer" as a currupt abbreviation of the word "Association".  It was popular up until I was a kid but then fizzled out only to be revived when America hosted the world cup and used the term as a way of differentiating it from their own homegrown "football", a move that was completely valid considering it was us Brits who had given the sport the name soccer in the first place.

Here's a comic that was about when I was a nipper and you can clearly see the term was well in use then:

^^^I just read a story in National Geographic about leatherback turtles, and it mentioned them being able to close off blood flow to their lungs so they could conserve energy while diving. ..And, how they have a gland under their tongue that filters salt out of their diet, and then pushes the waste out as tears. So, it could make sense that they might require different ways to function then other animals, and have different parts serve different functions.

Ive raised a few over the years,, they are very versatile animals.
You would be surprised by them.
Star Shelled Tortoises have to be raised with a member of the oposit sex, and they tend to play with each other.
Iraqi Desert Tortoises can climb walls.
Red Eared Sliders and Aligater Snappers can actualy be hand raised from hatchlings to not be vicious.
I had a hatchling that I had for a few years,, it was actualy quite personable.

To this day, John Wayne Gacey contends that he has only killed 1 person, and that he isnt gay.

Jeffery Dahmer only killed people because they were attractive and he "loved" them.
No American serial killer has even touched a record ,,,yet.

Robert Rastler, in 1978, coined the term "serial killer" for any murderer that killed 3 or more individuals.

London was actualy a Roman outpost called Londinium.
Most people from England are actualy of Roman descent. The true English natives fled north into Caledonia ( or Scotland)

The Britons didn't flee anywhere as the Romans let them keep their land, but Britannia stayed under the rule of Roman governors for over 300 years.  It is true that they didn't pay much attention to north or Hadrian's wall (well, not for very long anyhow), but as the "empire" was all about wealth and commerce, it probably wasn't economically viable to finance a military presence there in the long term.

I would have thought the real mixing of the gene pool came under Anglo-Saxon rule.

As further research I did on that, I have to recant what I thought was a fact .
The person that I got the fact from ( a college professor)  has a history of being wrong on many counts.
Especialy when he and I argued earlier today about the true origins of the Native Americans. ( i wont go into it,, he is now in my book, a bloody twit).

Most of the native tribes in America were the Clovis people originating in Soouthern Gaul ( around what is known now as Marsaiels ( sp)).

Good lord!  http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/medical/a/beetle_boy.htm

That old "Calcutta Telegraph" is a laugh:

"The outcome of this story is still murky, though.  According to a New India Press account of 25 July 2003, after Chandan was shifted to the SSKM Hospital, "doctors declared that it could be a stray case of flies coming from an external source and falling in while the boy was urinating."

We haven't turned up any follow-up articles on Chandan's condition since then, although we have noted a mini-outbreak of news reports from India about patients purportedly suffering from similar afflictions.  For example, the day after the last article on Chandan, the Calcutta Telegraph published another account of a boy suffering from a similar condition in which dung beetles were emerging from his rectum."

The company "Sony" was originally called "Totsuken." They felt the name "Sony" would be easier to pronounce. The name was invented by a cross between the name "sonus" and "sonny." The name sound and sonic are derived. Sonny was used to represent a young man or boy, which would show a energetic young company.

Tasmanian devils give birth to 20-30 young, each weighing approximately 0.18-0.24 grams. When the young are born, they move from the vagina to the pouch. Once inside the pouch, they each remain attached to a nipple for the next 100 days. Despite the large litter at birth, the female has only four nipples, so that no more than four young can survive birth. Those who do not procure a nipple are typically eaten by the mother.

In the 1970s, a Barbie doll was released that could grow breasts!
This doll, Growing Up Skipper, was released in 1975 amid a lot of controversy. This doll was Barbie?s younger sister, who could go through puberty by rotating her left arm (and revert by rotating it back). In addition to having her breasts get larger, Skipper would get a little taller and her waist would shrink. This line of Skipper dolls discontinued in 1977.

Today I learnt that Europeans are all different with numbers.  I'll paste from here:  http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/52579.html

Quote
The American system is:
10^06 = million
10^09 = billion
10^12 = trillion
...

The European system (formerly used in Britain, still used in Germany)
is:
10^06 = million
10^09 = thousand million
10^12 = billion
10^15 = thousand billion
10^18 = trillion
10^21 = thousand trillion

They don't teach you this for GCSE Spanish, but I suppose they're not numbers you'd use very often (unless you work in finance or space).

May they both share an ancestor and they're both genetic reincarnations of this slag-ancestor.  Like how Gaheris Rhade and Telemachus Rhade were both spitting images of their ancestor Camulus.

The flushing toilet was invented in 1596, not by Thomas Crapper as most people think, but by Sir John Harington.

It would have been better had his name been Sir John Hangeron.

Sir Harington advised everyone that the proper way to sit on a toilet was to face the toilet bowl, as to use it as a shelf for books, quills, and ink.

Is that why it's known as the John?

A friend of mine put swivel rollers on a piece of bathroom furniture so he can also use it for his laptop, books, etc. That "bathroom/office/living room" thing is something mostly male but I know a few women that do that too.

The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

The anticipated load of books is an ancient convention among architects who design libraries.  It's one of the fundamental elements that is taken into consideration for such buildings and has been since the mid-19th century.  That someone might consider designing a library in the mid 1960's without taking this factor into account begs belief.

That said, I'm going to go get some celery.
