Title: The Official Diasfora Doctor Who thread
Post by: Robin-Graves on December 18, 2009, 06:48:58 PM
Ok,, since im not the only Whovian here, maybe now we wont have to bore the non Whovians anymore,,
Im a big fan of the good Doctor and have been since Tom Bakers first episode ( Robot) back in I think 1978 or so ( first shown then here in America on PBS on saturday nights).
Anyway,, this thread is for all the Whovians here on Diasfora or yet to come,, let er rip.

Where to start on a Dr Who thread. How about the obvious? There's been 10 actors so far who have played The Doctor (not including Richard Hurndall who played the first Doctor in "The Five Doctors"). Here's the order I'd place them from best to worst.

1. Tom Baker - nothing I can say except he is far and away the best Doctor.
2. Christopher Eccleston - A pity he only stayed for one year, otherwise he may have challenged for #1.
3. Jon Pertwee - The first Doctor I watched as a child.
4. Patrick Troughton - A shame so many of his episodes no longer exist.
5. David Tennant - I was sceptical when he was cast, but was pleasantly surprised at how good he was. He's been a good Doctor, but I think the time for a change is right.
6. William Hartnell - The first, yet often most overlooked Doctor. Hampered by the fact his episodes were done "as live" and so any line fumbles were left in.
7. Peter Davison - The youngest Doctor (until Matt Smith begins his run), he was hampered by the awful production values of John Nathan-Turner.
8. Colin Baker - I liked his Doctor, but awful stories, costume and JNT production.
9. Paul McGann - Would have been much higher if he'd done more than one story (and a poor story at that). An excellent actor though, he would have been a good Doctor given the chance. Having only done one story he should have been bottom of the list by default, except for...
10 Sylvester McCoy - I'm still not convinced he was an actor. I remember him prior to Dr Who as a comedian, and doing kids shows like Tiswas, Vision On & Jigsaw. the only actor who I hated in the role of the Doctor and was usually rooting for the aliens in the hope one of them would shoot him and force a regeneration. No surprise when the series was cancelled with him in the role.

 :)

I only had the time recently to watch the first three episodes of the new series (with Christopher Eccleston). I must admit they are pretty damn good and addictive.  :P

Wait,,the Master is alive?
Dammit man! I saw him die in The Last Time Lord!
Of course I saw him die a few other times..
Hmm,, hope they dont run the whole Mater gimmick into the ground like they did with the Peter Davidson series. Good to see the Doctors arch nemisis back though.

That Master is like a bad penny!  I need to find out his story.

The Doctor and the Master are old friends. They were very close at the academy and both disliked the boring non interference ethos of the Time Lords (who were essentially galactic note takers). Both decided that that life wasn't for them and both stole a TARDIS each and went off their seperate ways to explore the galaxy/time.

The Doctors interference in other planets affairs were for reasons of helping the indigenous population,  while the Master's was for the acquisition of power and causing chaos. although they've clashed many times, they seem to still have a lot of affection for each other. The Master has had ample opportunity to kill the Doctor, but still hasn't, while the Doctor has saved the Master from death in the past and was clearly upset when he thought the Master had died during their last meeting.

Looking forward to their next meeting tomorrow.  :)

In the last meeting ( The Last Time Lord) The Doctor was going to take the master with him on HIS tardis and actualy care for him.
They are the last Galefreyans ( except for a female clone of the Doctor, but shes only HALF Galafreyan)
The Doctor and the master are the last two surviving Galefreyans ( Galefreyans were actualy a godlike race that were at the hight of their society when the universe was still very young) since the Doctor burned out the Galefreyans and the Daleks during a cataclysmic war called the Time Wars.
He was there during the fall of Arcadia ( maybe sometime he may come to terms with that).
The actual Time War was never seen on tv, but was documented in an American novel .
Its kind of a driving force for the Doctor, and was even used against him by Davros to cause him to have a sort of mental breakdown.
Btw,, I was wrong about one thing,, there is one more half Galefreyan,, The doctors hand absorbed his regeneration and due to Donna touching it regenerated into another Doctor.
Its now a half galefreyan half human in another dimension with Rose Tyler. And Donna absorbed part of the regeneration, taking the Doctors knowledge, and is now living back in England with no memory of her time with the Doctor, or her abilities as a Time Lady.
The Doctor wiped her memories when she was starting to breakdown since human minds werent designed to have such knowledge.
Dear god I can go on and on about this lmao.

Say um,, to all the other WHovians on this site,, who were, in your opinion the best aliens in the series?

That Doctor/Donna clone Doctor would probably probably provide an opportunity for David Tennant to make cameos appearences.  That'd be fun, as long as it doesn't happen too soon.

You can also look him up here, although you may have to use special methods to view it:

Robin, if you don't want this latest episode spoilt for you then don't click on the spoilers.

The Doctor and the master are the last two surviving Galefreyans

There's also Romana, who when we saw her last was staying in e-space (another alternate reality universe similar to the one Rose now lives in) and since the cult of Skaro Daleks survived by leaving this reality, it's probably reasonable to assume that Romana still lives.

I wonder if The Master has clones...

Timothy Dalton!!!???
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked him once as a possible Doctor on a servey back when Sylveter Mcoy was making a shambles of the series.

And thank you for correcting me about Romana,, I had forgotten about that ( how dare I forget Romana!!!).

Here's a clip from part two. Timothy Dalton looks like he's going to be in fine form.

Also here's the 2007 children in need episode (only 7.5 mins long) which not everyone might have caught. The Tennant Doctor meets the Davison Doctor.

I saw the Chilodren In Need episode.
Happened right before Voyage of the Damned.
Davison looks OLD!!!!
He did a good job though.

I watched the second part of Tennant's last story tonight and must say it was an anticlimax. It lasted for 1 hour 20 minutes and the story was done with 30 minutes left. The rest was just unnecessary sentimental padding. Tennant's been a good Doctor, but I'm glad there's been a change to freshen it up.

Looking forward to see how Matt Smith plays it in the new series in the spring.

I caught the last ten minutes of tonights episode and all I could think was 'good riddance Tennant, don't let the door hit you on the way out'. I know he is the most popular doctor, but I really have to wonder why. He's such an annoying pratt. Ecclescakes was my favourite tbh.

HERESY!!!!!!!! TO THE SCORPION PITS WITH YOU!!!!!!!!

Eccliston was good, he was more action oriented ( he was actualy going to shoot something in Dalek).
I liked Tennant,, he was good in my opinion.
But im alslo the guy that likes off the wall movies, and gets the humor of Tim Allen (Hey,, time will tell !).
Atleast Tennant was better than that American Doctor that was in a movie here in the states. Now HE sucked!

Finaly a decent foe for the good Doctor!
I loved the Silurians.
Nothing like a Dalek or a Cyberman,, but they ran them in the ground last season or two.
Although,, It was nice to see them trying to wipe each toher out ,, and well, Davros is allways an unexpected surprise.

So the new series started last night. New Doctor, new companion, new TARDIS interior design, new aliens, new opening titles, new everything. I really enjoyed it. Matt Smith was really good as the Doctor - I was sceptical when he was cast with him being so young - but I think he'll be really good. Storywise it won't go down as one of my favourites, but it did its job of establishing the new Doctor and introducing his new companion. I'm looking forward to episode 2.  :)

just go with the new incarnation. If there is some information missed which is important, they will usually tell it. After all, they want to get new fans of the show and not only stick to those who already are.

Just now there was a girl typing on her laptop in the hall outside where I work, and she had headphones on so I had to wave to get her attention.. and I?d stepped 4 steps backward to tell her I liked her laptop.. and she got a goofy giddy grin :D She has a white laptop.. but on the outside of it is a huge image of the TARDIS. So.. lol.. either it's a Who special limited edition laptop o_O ..or it's a sticker.. either way it's super cool :P

This is after watching episode 5 and refers to an episode of the 10th Doctor series.
Spoiler (hover to show)

Has the TARDIS ever blown up before or is it the first time in the first episode?  I'm just wondering because the chameleon circuit wasn't fixed.  Maybe it was fixed, but the Doctor likes the police box design, or he could have forgotten to turn it on.

Has the TARDIS ever blown up before or is it the first time

There was this one. (near the end of the clip)

but it turned out it was someone messing with their minds and it hadn't exploded after all. (still worth watching the clip to see Wendy Padbury's rear at the end).  :)

I'm just wondering because the chameleon circuit wasn't fixed.  Maybe it was fixed, but the Doctor likes the police box design, or he could have forgotten to turn it on.

He likes it looking like a police box, at least that's what the 9th Doctor told Rose in "Boom Town".

As for the angels, it was surprising that their powers seemed to have changed, but had they changed? They touched things in the "Blink" story that didn't go back in time such as a key and the TARDIS - it can't be just living beings that they can send back in time otherwise everyone they sent back would have been naked - so presumably they can either send people back in time or kill them (whichever one the plot requires to move the story along).  ;D

I really like The Catherine Tate Show (http://www.catherinetateshow.co.uk/), so I like her. But, I like this season of Doctor Who the way it is. The side jokes are funny, without being ill timed. And the episodes are great. And, I don't find any of the leads unlikable.

The Doctor, he violated the temporal prime directive.

In the Space Whale episode last season he had some quote about it being ok to break rules when kids are involved.. or, Amy implied that about him... I can't rember the exact phrasing. So.. I assumed he confronted last night with that point of view in mind, and possible at first only changing one night's events to make his 'haunting' effective.. then got carried away with the story behind the story.

I think as a time traveller though he has a basic responsibility to follow certain codes. ..but, he seems 'extraordinary'.. so, the same rules don't seem like they'd always have to apply to him. He'd have plenty of out-clauses.

Is The Doctor from our future or past?  Being a time-traveller, his present is kind of all over the place, but without the Tardis, would he be older now than he already is?  With all the time-travel, do the Time Lords even see time in terms of the past and future?

I suppose they'd have their own relative sense of time, such as what the individual experienced previously is in the past, but everything else would be now, right?

Why is the TARDIS outside Earls Court station?

> TARDIS link < (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&gl=uk&ll=51.492206,-0.19299&spn=0.007963,0.032229&z=15&layer=c&cbll=51.492199,-0.192984&panoid=9xKOjlsYQuF93ZSD0k6i_w&cbp=12,173.59,,0,20.11)

It's been there for ages.  Could it be a real police box?  Could The Doctor be waiting for something?  It's quite worrying sometimes.  I've only seen it from inside a car, I've not touched it before.

There is also something similar in Parliament Square, which the protesters have put up.  It's a Peace box.  Google's Streetview hasn't got it, but it's around here:

He's an alien.  :)

If the Doctor ages physically in conventional terms (and there's no mention that he does) then it's at a much slower rate than humans. I know he was meant to have been in the  Patrick Troughton form for around 60 years - he looked like he was in his mid  fifties when he first appeared in that form but I wouldn't have said he looked 115 in his last appearance.

All that being said, we don't know if he gives his age in Earth or Galifreyan years (or both on and off) and how would he actually measure how many years have passed when he's travelling through time rather than being on an actual planet? Also, he's said once before that the interior of the Tardis is "outside of time" meaning even a human like Amy could travel around in it for thousands of years and not noticeably age (providing she didn't spend much time out of it).

Why would this be a problem? Half of the actors that have played the doctor are dead too, and he makes an appearance every week.
I was wondering about that, they could so easily bring her back in a new body using Tardis magic.  They probably won't, though.

George Clooney could be the Doctor, he's got experience.

George Clooney as the Doctor?  Harumph.  I say it would have to be whoever the current Doctor is or it wouldn't work.  Either way, anyone would be better than George Clooney...even Tom Green.

Ewan tends to piss me off a bit.  He'd have to be a generally likeable fella.  I don't know British actors well enough...How about Martin Freeman?

I was going to suggest Peter Cushing, because I thought it'd be humorous, but Wikipedia says he's dead now.

It's likely that a new actor will have taken over from Matt Smith in the lead role by the time a film goes into production.

Russell Brand would be more traditional, but I'm probably the only person who thinks that.

He would? There's only been one comedian cast as the Doctor before and he was awful.

I wasn't completely serious about Russell Brand in particular, but I do feel that if it were to be made into a movie you'd need a doctor who was more 'out there'. Growing up all the actors cast were a little scatty (maybe not Patrick Troughton so much), and it felt to me that it was their personalities shaping that of the doctor, rather than it being intentionally scripted.

In 1990 Sylvester McCoy was voted best Doctor!

By Who ?

Tom Baker has always been the best

Jon Pertwee was a comedian, too. (Exhibit A: CPO Pertwee in the Navy Lark).

I think Tom Baker also qualifies.

In 1990 Sylvester McCoy was voted best Doctor!

Not forgetting William Hartnell. He was most at home with comic characters -- even if sometimes it was the comedy of the straight guy.

heh.

We've just been arm-twisted into subscribing to that by my son.  At least it wasn't 'Fiesta' (more's the pity),

I'm fairly certain a comedy actor doesn't qualify as a comedian. Most actors have appeared in comedy roles at some point in their career - I don't consider Robert De Niro a comedian for example.

Sylvester McCoy was voted best Doctor whilst he was the current Doctor (as was David Tennant twice) - the only three years that Tom Baker didn't win it (he came second on all three).

Not forgetting William Hartnell.

Usually the first actor to play a role in a TV series/series of films are the most fondly remembered, but this never seems the case with William Hartnell. I watched "The Gunfighters" the other day, and while the episode was mostly awful, Hartnell was still good in it, even though he was apparently quite ill by that time and kept forgetting his lines.

I think the key to a good Doctor is for an actor to be cast that can do drama and comedy equally well (there was almost no comedy at all in Hartnell's Doctor). The three who tend to be the most popular (Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton and David Tennant) can do this.

I think that in Jon Pertwee's case at least, he was a comedian by trade if for nothing more than 18 years in the Navy Lark.

He is also listed as a comedian here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:English_comedians&from=P

as are a lot of comedic actors.

It's a moot point I suppose but I have always seen the Doctor as a bit of a joker and those who played him too seriously like Christopher Eccleston, are the least memorable (while Paul McGann never even made it onto the telly).

When I made the Russell Brand comment on the previous page, it was completely off the cuff and what I thought was just a random idea of my own.  However, I never knew this from a few years back:

Nobody really dies at the BBC, they're just put into cold storage to be wheeled out sometime in the future.

A lesbian from Emmerdale, who has been serving four years for murder. Just what Doctor Who needs.

Cute, though, in a grand-daughterly way.

Crikey, you really are omniscient.

That's twice they've had lesbians in Emmerdale, I really need to get into this one.

A bit off-topic: I'm glad they stopped Brookside, they made me watch incest happen.  Didn't it also used to come on at the same time as something I actually wanted to watch?

I'm a little annoyed they've decided to reveal who the next Doctor will be, I want it to be a nice surprise.  It's a shame I can't avoid the internet.

Ideally, I would also not be aware of Matt Smith leaving.

Doctor Jack Harkness.  I'd watch it.
