Could you recommended some of them?

Like gritty sad country? or drinking songs? Real country..not washed out mainstream country? Or, faster stuff like psychobilly?

I think what he was refering to was the Outlaw genre.
Its not really country,, today its also called Red Dirt or Texas Music.
Its turning into its own thing.

Yeah Laama,, check out some Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.
If you really want something cool,, Check out a band from back in 1985 called The Highwaymen ( Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Chris Chistopherson).
They had a song that made me almost cry called,, incidentaly,, The Highwayman.
Kid Rock is in thier ranks now since he did Rock And Roll Jesus.

I got this song called "broken " in my head by Hillbilly Vegas ( check them out on Myspace Laama).
Everytime I hear it, it reminds me of girlfreinds past.
Theyre an awsome band.

Hey Laama,, check out some Big and Rich.( Save a Horse,Ride A Cowboy).

That much info put together is tripping me up. Texas music is too broad to be inclusive, Red Dirt is super specific almost to the point of being a clique.. and there's not anything coles to Outlaw music.

We just need to start a country thread.. and later this weekend when I have time I'll migrate this conversation over to it. I won't post more until we get a whole thread going...

For just today.. I was thinking Laama might like Gary Stewart. He committed suicide a few years ago. And he wrote some clever, but sad drinking songs. I'll put a link to his Wiki page. And two of my favorite songs by him.

Gary Stewart

And both these bands still currently tour, and are both fun to see in person -

Dale Watson

Reverend Horton Heat

For straight out listening you can't ever beat George Jones

Dwight Yoakam plays Doc Miles in the Crank films.

Cheapie,, you need to check out an artist from Arkansas named Dorian Cross. He is awsome and has one hell of a band behind him.
They had a Battle Of The BIrds ( the bands do Freebird as a competition) and Dorian Cross was thrown out,, they said him and the band were too damn good and they would make it too lopsided a competition.

Im going to go hang with him this weekend in Ft Smith.

Really? I think he has a gorgeous voice. He has amazing clarity. Plus he's not even 'young country' or new country.. he's just.. him. And one of Johnny Cash's best friends was Dylan.

I dunno.. I just like all kinds of music. I like certain artists in every genre.

..edit.. I overstated when I said that JC and BD were best friends.. but when they did hang out.. they liked each other. I'm pressed for time to go into it deeper.. but there's a long tradition of bands crossing over to explore early roots of their countries.. that's the point I was making..

JC also hung out with Bob Segar and Jimi Hendrix along with Waylon Jennings who,, in his early years,, was also a rock and roll star.
I like the southern rock/country/blues cross over bands.
Kid Rock does alot of that himself.
Look at Rock And Roll Jesus. Which in my opinion was his best album.
SOme of these people you just cant classify. Hillbilly Vegas ( look them up on Myspace and listen to Broken on their website,, the electric virsion is even better) are like this.
They are marketed as one kind of music, but they are their own genre.
I know these people, and have for years,, they all came from metal bands.
I love seeing them though,, they treat me like a special guest. Ive gotten ot get up on stage with them a few times and play.
Last show I got to hang out backstage and be at the after show party.
