Title: What is/was on the menu tonight.
Post by: smokester on January 14, 2011, 03:17:27 PM
Title says it all.  No need to go into any great detail about what you are going to eat or what you did, but if something really sounds good, you may be asked to post the recipe in the other thread :).

Tonight we had a side of Salmon with lemon and herb crust, chips or fries to some (it is fish 'n' chip night after all), salad and some wholemeal bread.

Passed on the wine tonight due to too much fizzy stuff last night, and opted for a Caffreys instead to wash it down.

Quite delicious actually.

Chicken breast milanesas (http://milanesas), quiche (made with I had handy: corn, onions, cheese and olives + eggs) and tomato & lettuce salad. I'll end up eating all the lettuce myself since the other members of the family always fish out only the tomatoes.

To drink... I don't know. Probably red wine or maybe just sparkling water tonight.

If I can put the prep time in this morning.. I'm cooking curry chicken stew for tonight... with white rice.

The family had these 100% beef pattie jobbies in a wholemeal bun with salad this evening, and I had similar but with fish.

For dessert I was given 3 pieces of this amazing Italian chocolate torte, that was so rich that the missus couldn't eat all of hers (I had to stop twice myself).  What's left of hers is, as I speak, on the coffee table staring at me and I swear I can hear it whispering my name.  I am about to burst though so I should get it out of my head.

Last night was provided by a few new friends of mine. Two male friends if that tells you anything.  :D  Wings, chz/sausage crackers, nacho chips with queso dip. But I had no problem consuming any of it!! Blazing wings, I mean hot enough to change the color of your "morning donation" AAHHH!!! LOL  ;D And lots and lots of alcohol before going to see Black Swan for a second time. Yes the guys are straight but I still think I was their beard for going to this movie.

Sunday nights are one of the nights I work late, so I have to fix soemthing that requires zero prep time, and cooks fast.. like salmon... likely also rice.. and, I've been thinking all day about cheddar broccoli soup.. and/or spinach salad. At home to drink right now there's juice, tea, milk, Corona, Perrier.. or Perrier +  Macallan. I rarely eat dessert.

Really boring today (it being Sunday and all) with simple roast chicken thingmabobs for everyone and nut cutlets for me, and steamed carrots, broccoli and yorkshires to accompany.

Dessert was toffee mouse with bananas and a tin of fruit cocktail added, topped with grated chocolate.

Add cauliflower and remove the nut cutlets and that was my dinner (lunch to just about everyone else here)

Not the dessert part though, that was Tiramisu.

Do you buy them or do you make them yourself? They look very good. I'd like to try them but they don't exist here.
I make my own soy patties bc ready made ones tend to be too dry and thin.

I haven't seen them either. I'll look at some place like Whole Foods. They sell ones here that are soy and black bean that I really like. The black beans make them moist, and they're very spicy.

What a good idea Skadi! I'll try adding black beans. It might add moistness and sweetness too. Sometimes I add bulgur or lentils to soy patties.

Sounds really good goldshirt.

Mondays we recover from so much eating on the weekend. So it's salad in summer and soup in winter. Even when I put a lot of stuff in the salad I still hate Mondays.  :D

Generally speaking I buy them but have made them before by adapting a nut roast recipe.  I sometimes buy the Asda ones which would make them Walmart :)

Interesting suggestion of adding an egg so you can put them on a barby, I'll definitely have to try that when it warms up a bit.

I'll eat any of the stuff you posted though.

For dessert, we often have fruit.  Sometimes, chocolates.  But we tend to avoid sweets at night for the kiddos.

Last night the missus and I had my spiced up version a Dal makhani with rice and paratha, while the munchkins had some ready made pasta dishes that they really like (gives us the opportunity to cook something really hot without having to do separate dishes for the kids).

Tonight it is the Tagliatelle dish night that I posted in the recipe thread, and I can't wait I love it so much!!

I use black beans for lots of things.

Monday I did cook Salmon. Tuesday ate out Mexican food. Last night, cooked cheeseburgers, red bean and rice, and spinach salad. Tonight since I have a snow day off and extra time, I'm cooking a brisket, mashed potaotes and gravy, green beans, and fresh strawberries.

Tonight was Spinach pizzas all round.  Unfortunately I kind of overdid it a bit with the Thai chilis on mine and had to eat the first quarter in agony. However, I had fully acclimatised for the remaining 3/4s.

Capsaicin has a well documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic action.

Tonight is girls night out so it's probably going to be pizza or sandwiches.

The yoghurt was rich and had almost the consistency of custard.  So other than the original flavour combination the textures were familiar.  My son thought it was the best pudding combination he'd ever had - but he says that about every dessert he eats.

I know! It was a little indulgent for a weekday. :D After much consideration, my sister bought a new car (her 9 year old car had nearly 200,000 miles on it) and we had been in the dealership for hours that day, so we were really, really hungry.

Dinner tonight was leftover hot and sour soup and fried rice.

My husband bought tenderloin at a very good price so the freezer is full of meat now and that's what I cooked last night. I didn't have shallots so I used green onions, normal onions and garlic. Also mustard, herbs, balsamic vinegar, wine, etc, etc. I don't like red meat so I get carried away when I cook it.  :D  Some simple potatoes for my family and arugula salad for me. I'm a HUGE fan of arugula. I use it in salads, sandwiches, pizzas, etc.
Out of curiosity: how much does tenderloin cost in the rest of the world? We paid it 9 U$S/kg when it's normally 15-16.

I have no idea about the general price of meat although I do buy some weekly, but I usually only buy what's on an "offer".

Tonight I am making a simple penne with tomato sauce - mainly because I am worn out from working and I can make that with minimal effort.

Thanks God I have some wine left.

apple / pear / banana / smokey bacon crisps / cheerios and bran-flakes mixed.

The family are having chicken and mash potato tonight although I bet my son wants the left over pasta from last night (he loved it), and I am going to have a margarita pizza with extra mozzarella and smoked salmon.

Not sure whether to have a red or white along with that - it has white written all over it but the missus can't drink tonight so it's only relative to my pizza?

I vote a Chianti

Last night I made a Cholley (Punjabi) for us while the kids had a ready meal of their choice (they both opted for spaghetti and meatballs).  I made our curry and served it with a light biryani (half biryani half plain rice mixed together) and did some onion parathas too although those were frozen ones made by Taj.

Washed it down with a bottle of red although I can't remember what grape and the bottle's out in the recycling now.  All in all it was a lovely meal and made the missus very happy.

Today was dinner/lunch at my mum's. She did some fantastic smoked salmon salad for starters, and for main, she did a very original cous cous with roast chicken for everyone, with these massive potato wedges baked in olive oil.  There was also some tzatziki to accompany and instead of chicken she did some poached haddock with leeks and ginger for me.

Dessert was a lemon posset with strawberries, and there was a couple of bottles of bubbly to wash it all down.

And no washing up!!!

The last couple of nights we have had soups with crusty rolls in a bid to cut down on the size of our evening meals (me, the missus and my son that is), but oddly, rather than this being almost a punitive experiment, the kids love it and want soup every night for the rest of their lives and the missus and myself have felt just as sated as we did with a big pasta or curry?

So that part of the diet is going ok, all I need now is to stop munching on chocky bikkies and panettone all day...

My husband: "Honey, I need to lose weight. Please tonight just salad and/or soup". And then he goes and eats a chocolate alfajor for dessert.

Last night was pork tenderloin with my own recipe of rosti (onion, garlic, cheese added). A post in this forum made want to eat that, btw. Ah... An arugula and tomato salad to buffer the protein and fat (that my hubby didn't touch).

I have no idea yet.

Me too smokes, I'm trying to trim my waist to what it used to be.  I'm already seeing the effect of my junk food diet.  I like that I gained weight but I don't want to add inches to my waist.

Lunch was at one of the nicer places here and it was the worst lasagna I ever had.

I'm seriously thinking about it.  I get tired thinking about sweating though so I really don't know what to do.  Five meals a day really doesn't help.

I'm not sure if you'll check this... but just in case.. Lots of the burger places are terrible in the parks. The salmon is always good though. There's lots of the fast food type places in all the parks that sell salmon. In the Land area at Epcot they have a food court that's good. Basically all the back 'world' portion of Epcot is good.. Some of it is awesonme even. Animal Kingdom has a McDonalds.. I think. For breakfast there's lots of good pastry shops. It's fun to eat pastry and fruit and sit by the avenues and watch the park open and hunt for autographs. There's a place in Tomorrowland that's disgusting.. so avoid tomorrowland in general :p The hotels usually have ok food if you order carefully. And, one place I want to go and haven't is Artists Point at Wilderness Lodge. The polynesian has cool places to eat also. The Hollywood Studios seems like it should be cool, but it gives me creepy vibes for some reason.. and all the food places seem dirty and crowded. I went over and rode Tower of Terror, then headed back to the other parks to eat.

Tonight I am going to try and make a kind of spicy curry using Mattar Paneer.  I haven't really cooked with that before, but I have had some onece that was quite overcooked and was a bit like stringy tofu.  So I'll try and be delicate and just have some clean steamed basmati with it along with some flatbreads that I'll make up as I go.

Depending on the cheese and how hot and for how long you heat them it can happen that. Been there unfortunately. Not with that dish in particular though.

Tonight I just came in from the street so it's going to be Gnocchi (that I bought in a pasta parlor ready to boil) with tomato sauce (that I have in the freezer). Parmigiano, bread and wine and we can be eating in 10 min.  ;D

My daughter has just discovered lasagne (thanks to Garfield) so I think I'll attempt to make a vegetarian version this evening.  I have made lasagne a few times before, but not since I have had kids as it takes too much preparation time. They're older now and tend to keep out from under my feet these days though.

Yes, I did wonder Max. I haven't seen that stuff in the supermarkets that I am aware of, but I did find an online shop over here that has it.  Not what I'd call cheap though and I may opt to make it myself using an online guide. That said, I would probably be better off at least buying it once, so I know what to aim for,

Empanadas. I did 3 flavors: caprese, chicken (with spices, olives, etc) and gouda and onions. Either the cheese or the tomatoes had too much moisture bc some of the caprese empanadas opened up and spilled part of the filling in the oven.  ::)

I had this meal and dessert yesterday and tonight.  I cooked the rice and meat myself, but I bought all the Banchan. All the packages are in Korean and the owners of the shop don't speak English very well so some of the names may be wrong, but tried my best.
Kimchi
Japchae (glass noodles)
Daan Moo Ji ( yellow pickled radish)
Spicy Pickled Squid (Ojinguh Jut) w/ cucumbers
Musaengchae (daikon)
I don't know what the green veg is, and the owner didn?t know the English name, but it was good.

Having tried it two nights in a row, I?d advise against this Chamoy sauce at all costs. It's full of preservatives and does not have any apricots, nor pickled fruits whatsoever. The flavor is strange. Not at all like I had imagined. All I can say is it reminds me of a mild hot sauce and that horrible hot and sour sauce packet that comes with your egg rolls from Chinese takeouts.

I'm not deterred though. I have a bunch of other stores near me where I can hopefully find a better brand before trying to make it myself.

You should do that bc my guess is the taste varies a lot with the recipe. I've only tried it once about 15 years ago so I don't really remember how it tastes.

Last night was sooo hot that we ate antipasto and sandwiches de miga. No way I was going to add heat to the house turning on the stove or oven.

I had to resort to a 3 tomato (vine, cherry and sun-dried) tagliatelle last night I had such little time. I can get that on the table within 20 minutes from scratch and I sometimes wonder what the allure of ready-meals is?  Dessert was easy as it's strawberry season, so just a quick wash and the kids could cut and dip them however they wanted.

I've had nothing but restaurant meals lately and I want a home cooked meal.  Even one I'd cook myself.

I ordered steamed tilapia at this restaurant and it tasted so "fishy" that I sent it back to be steamed again.  This time though I asked them to add salt and pepper to lessen the fishiness.  My companion also ordered fish and was unhappy at its texture and taste.  I guess we're picky about our fish since we're from a coastal area and can get really fresh fish almost any time.

Weird one tonight for my household. We had (at my son's request) sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked tomatoes, waved chips (fries to the Americans), fried eggs, baked beans and bread and butter.  I suppose that's like a "Mixed Grill" but the chore in it was that I had to do veggie sossies and bacon for myself, which was even more pans to watch.

Saffron?! Interesting. But not many spices can survive the strength of blue cheeses. My nonna used to add nutmeg so I do too sometimes. The heat must be low and the stirring should be done slowly too. I've ruined too many foundues. Well, I generally ruin them.  :D

^how hard was the tempura to do?

The trick with Tempura is to put your bowl of batter in another bowl of ice and leave it for 10 minutes or so, and put the heat of your oil up perhaps 15o above what it would be for prawns (or whatever).  By doing this you get the lightest and crispiest batter that is just the nuts with sushi rice and a little wasabi'd soy sauce.

I'm not very proficient in frying. I've only just recently started frying chicken... Before I've always avoided it. I would actuay sort of like a fryer.. Supposedly good fryers crisp things, but do it at a high enough temp to block the fat from seeping into whatever it is you're cooking.

The last few weeks I have bought a triple pack of margarita pizzas and an assortment of toppings.  Then in the evening we all make out own pizzas (well my son makes 2/3rds of one and my daughter 1/3) and I can't help making a few chips/fries as well.  We then watch a film of some sort with out food on our laps rather than the ritual of evening dinner around the table.

It is fast becoming my favourite food night.

Nothing.  I'm alone at home (kids and mom are far, far away) and I'm not in the mood to eat.

Unless vodka cocktails count.

I have no idea.  Probably whatever the canteen has ready.  For a moment there, I was gonna say, whatever the canteen has on file.

Times like this, I wish I lived in a proper flat with a kitchen and all.  Which is senseless because I hate cooking.

Last night the family wanted an English fry-up for dinner (although most of it was grilled). So I obliged by giving them: Sausages, Bacon, Tomatoes, American style chips/fries, Beans (with onion and peas (I do that to get some vits in)), and Eggs.  I had some Quorn ham as a substitute for the meat and all in all it was a real treat and tasted fantastic.

English cuisine may be a little boring and unadventurous, but by heck it's comforting.

We all went to the Italian place on the common today, where I ate, drank, and was merry.  I personally had linguine with king prawns and cherry tomatoes.  Followed by a chocolate brownie cake (not a chocolate brownie) and an Italian brandy among many other things.

Such a lovely day without cooking and washing up.

Sunday lunch at my in-laws is always copius to say the least (4-5 course meal that lasts from 1PM to 5 PM). But yesterday it got out of hands. The dessert was particularly good. Some dulce de leche ice cream trifle with Bailey's and other stuff. I haven't eaten a single thing since yesterday till now that I'm having breakfast. And even that's only mate and a piece of toast.  ::)

The missus had her Christmas party on friday and brought home enough buffet food to feed the 5000.  It had to be used or thrown so why not a Saturaday night with a splendid home buffet in the living room watching a family film.  I ate far too much as usual and had pizza slices for breakfast, which really took me back to my bachelor days.

I had steamed carrots and broccoli, boiled potatoes that were then rolled in olive oil and baked for 10 mins, haddock and parsley sauce.

I got my son to make attend to most of it while I showered for the umpteenth time, and he took it all the way to the point of serving so it was virtually on the plate when I got back to the kitchen.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Well not tonight but for lunch. Today I made salads for 20 people and I didn't have plastic bowls so I placed them in buckets.  ;D
Here's the story: I'm building a new home and it's customary here that the day the concrete is poured the house owners do an asado (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asado) for the people working plus some family members. It's mostly a male gathering since us women tend to exclude ourselves due to the precarious conditions.  :D  No place to sit, eating off one's lap, drinking cheap red wine in plastic cups... I bet they'll have fun.  ;D

It's a Piedmontese dish that looks like this:

Here's the wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagna_cauda). It's not uncommon where I live. But we add our own things like ravioli, pieces of schnitzel and pretty much whatever you like. My favorite thing: pieces of French bread.

Fungi Trifolati

This reminded me of a way I prepare mushrooms when I can get hold of big Champignons, Portobello or Porcini.
I cut the stipes, cut them small and sautƩ them in oil+butter with garlic and green onions. Then I fill the caps and put them in the oven. They're heaven.

It was the lemon that made it for me.  There was perhaps just a touch to much lemon juice for it to be perfect, but I can't remember ever having that combination before which was mouthwatering indeed.

Chinese here as I worked re-flooring our kitchen until 8.30pm.

I had plain chow mein, boiled rice and a king prawn curry.  Washed down with an ice cold lager (so cold it had ice flakes in it).

Superb.

Last night I skipped dinner on account of going to this during the day (and of course eating too much):

http://www.foodiesfestival.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=117&Itemid=179

It was good fun and some great food.  The only problem was that the area has become even posher than it previously was and the prices reflected that.  A pint of cider was Ā£5 and you couldn't get a plate of food for less than Ā£6.50.  While that may not sound much on the face of it, we are talking a polystyrene plate and food that is cooked well in advance so it isn't quite as tasty as it looks on the boards.

I ended up drinking Chinese beer as it was only Ā£2.50 a can (quantity more than quality in these cases), and had a vegetarian Tagine.  The family had the meat version that looked scrumptious.

I don't know if I could take my daughter to such a place without having to hear "when are we leaving?" every 10 min.

Plenty of sweets, fudge stalls and other kids around the place.  It was actually the kids' grandparents that wanted to bail first.

Battersea Park is when of the better parks in the capital too.  It has a boating lake, a Buddhist shrine that is something to behold, it overlooks the Thames, it has a small zoo, a funfair at this time of year and some great fountains to stand in when it's really hot.

I just wish I could afford half of the attractions.

Today is my mum's birthday. I'll take care of the cake but they're dreaming if they think I'll cook much more than that. Both my sister's family AND my mother (who was working there for a couple days) are coming from Buenos Aires this very afternoon so it's probably pasta from the usual trattoria.

Isn't it better to just be able to relax with your family than slave over a hot stove preparing an elaborate meal?

We're having quesadillas.  It's already prepared, so an easy night.

Idk... it depends on how many people we're talking about and if I get any help. I mean if they're willing to pour me a glass of wine, set the table and wash the dishes then I'm game.  :)

I had a big medley of root vegetables baked in a green chili sauce (my daughter had to have a separate lot using honey instead).  I served them with a burger in a crusty bun with loads of salad, and I used my soya alternative burgers that the rest of the family really like anyhow.

It was scrummy but could have done with a sauce.

Are you just going to stay in central London?  The SW has some great places (more Chelsea and Fulham rather than where I am) and I could recommend a few places there for sure.  What kind of food is your preferred choice when out with the missus?

Chek's local too, maybe he has some ideas.

You're right by Chek's then.

Central London has too many restaurants to know which one is best, but one place that is a couple of miles away from there in Camden is The Mango Rooms (http://www.mangoroom.co.uk/).  The place was started by a friend of mine called Derek Blake and it was a little known secret among restaurant owners as the place that they'd eat at.  I think it is still under the radar and may well be worth a visit as the food used to be beyond compare and it has a really relaxed atmosphere.

I am saying this now although I haven't been there in at least 10 years, but I know my old Camdonite friends still swear by it.

Sandwich.  Toasted (more like burnt, toaster of hatred) Hamburger bun, roast beef, sliced hard boiled egg, swiss, tomato, onion, avocado, horseraddish sauce, spicy brown mustard, salt and pepper.

Microwaved it on low for a minute to melt the swiss.

A little heavy for a lunch sandwich, but it was just right for dinner.

Plus it used up the two hard boiled eggs I had left over, but they killed the egg slicer.

We had homemade chicken pot pies.  I make a ton of them and freeze them.  It takes a whole day and gives me a backache and they are really fattening, so I don't know if I'll make them again.  They are made from scratch with the sauce, chopped veg.s and bits of chicken all prepared and then placed in shells that I make also.  That was the last of them.  They were delicious.

It is similar hash browns expect these are in a circle form.

Potato pancakes are shallow-fried pancakes of grated or ground potato, flour and egg, often flavored with grated onion or garlic and seasoning. Potato pancakes may be topped with a variety of condiments, ranging from the savory (such as sour cream or cottage cheese) to the sweet (such as apple sauce or sugar), or they may be served ungarnished. Potato pancakes are sometimes made from mashed potatoes to produce pancake-shaped croquettes.[1]

Smoked trout pasta tonight.  I'm not going to use a tomato or cream based sauce as they won't work with trout (although combined they might), so I am going to aim for a vegetable based sauce - something like butternut squash?.

I ended up just using finely chopped broccoli, carrots and parsnips in a butternut squash sauce, and served it with rigatoni. The trout I am saving for tonight and I am going to cook it with shallots, garlic, a sprinkle of chili flakes and heaps of olive oil.  I will add a little tomato puree to give it colour and body, and serve it with linguine.

I'm 90% sure we'll eat some kind of antipasto, asado, provoleta (https://www.google.com.ar/search?q=masas+finas&client=firefox-a&hs=7Ui&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=OWA7Ue_TJoiE8ASB_IFw&ved=0CDMQsAQ&biw=1067&bih=541#client=firefox-a&hs=rpN&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=provoleta&oq=provoleta&gs_l=img.3..0l7j0i24l3.1715208.1718302.0.1719841.9.9.0.0.0.0.214.1303.3j4j2.9.0...0.0...1c.1.5.img.ajC2bKlHkjI&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43287494,d.eWU&fp=2327c55d9a343bc&biw=1067&bih=541) and salads.
I'm 100% sure my brother-in-law will burn the grilled vegetables.
I'm also 100% sure the red wine will be fabulous.
I'm in charge of the dessert tonight and since it's way too hot to cook anything I'll buy either ice cream or petit fours.
All in all a promising evening.

Hated it the first time, loved the second.
Fresh salmon and soft cheese in a walnut bread sandwich was the best.
Must have some more.

Last night i ate a Chinese non descriptive meal, wife loves Chinese - I on the other hand think there tasteless.

today at lunch will be a full roast meal
roast chicken (with herbs). mash potato / numerous veg / roast potato's / stuffing / gravy / Yorkshire pudding. with a glass or two of crispy white wine.

My husband calls those "Mommie hates me."

I don't know why I keep buying campbells soup. Tonight it was "Jammin' Jerk Chicken", and they sure were bless'ed jerks. NO bless'ed CHICKEN.

This poo:
http://www.campbellsoup.com/Products/Chunky/All/121258 (http://www.campbellsoup.com/Products/Chunky/All/121258)

It was rice and bean soup in acid broth.

Now you may remember my previous experience with rockin orange bless'ed kicken chiken soup, which had the color of 1990's Nickelodeon, but I am stupid, and out of food.

Now the "kicken chiken" tasted like bless'ed insanity peppers, this jammin poo wasn't much better. It begins to explain why Walmart is now selling FLAVORED antacid tablets.

Flavor is meant to be an accent, not a brass knuckle strike to the bless'ed tongue. I don't like how chips are covered in flavor powder poo anymore either. It's making me wonder what the golly is wrong with the food industry.

Give me a nice Plomeek soup over this technicolor cowpoo. It would only be logical.

And it wouldn't give me heartburn.

Also, this soup fights booze poorly. I'm FitShaced.

8ully, I recommend their grilled chicken and sausage gumbo.  It's got chunks of chicken and some sausage slices (I pick them out) but a good flavor with rice and vegetables to add texture.  Progresso also makes a decent version of this.  Most canned soup sucks, btw.

Supermarket didn't have hot dog buns. Employee could not help me because she did not speak English. Googled it.

I phrased it out, decided nope, and went home.

Funny how if you had said that in my (Spanish speaking) country probably a few people would have understood what you meant. Here it is pan de pancho.
I know I'm repeating myself when I quote Borges: "Hispanic America has a lot of things in common. Language isn't one of them."

Tonight I'll make chicken fajitas. I've even ripen the avocado to make guacamole. Since I'm the only one in the family that likes guacamole I'll probably end up with a tummy ache for eating so much.  ::)

Canned roast beef.

Now, we tried this once before, but after shredding the meat in the food processor, it went directly into the garbage. Some of the foulest smelling unappetizing poo I have ever seen.

So today we drained it, tossed it in the frying pan, put it on "slightly warm" and covered with a glass lid. also hit it with some bbq sauce. Let it sweat things out for a bit.

Later turned it a few times with the spatula and hit it with some more sauce. Really came out great, like a pulled pork sandwich.

Scooped it out on some sandwich rolls and melted some provolone over it.

My Roommate referred to it as prison meat, but I was actually impressed, and will probably pick up a couple more cans. Beats the everloving crap out of paying through the nose for Lloyd's, which is actually hormel.

Bea, you need Terro ant baits.  It's not especially toxic to humans, but uses borax in a sugar solution(some places use borax as a food preservative and it's a common laundry detergent booster as well as a main ingredient in Silly Putty).  You can put the baits under the sink in cupboards, locked away.  Trust me, it works.  We've had ants inundate us during the winter and this is the only thing that works.

Windex is a good way to clean them up, it kills them and helps cut down the little pheromone trails they leave for their friends.

That's very good advice 6p. That kind of jelly bait works very well with those tiny kitchen ants. The only ants I saw it didn't work against were my carpenter ants.
Then there's diatomaceous earth (http://www.vegetablegardener.com/item/8107/diatomaceous-earth-as-non-toxic-ant-killer). I haven't tried it myself but a friend had little ants attacking her TV set and she says it worked fine.
I LOL when I read about Windex. I also use Windex-like products to keep them at bay and my husband laughs at me. But you spray it on the countertop, etc before you go to bed at night and I promise they won't come out!

Leftover Stromboli. I was just bless'ed sick of burritos. So I baked all that crap up in a crescent roll dough.

Sounds very good. I imagine one could even try making savoury pies with that dough.

Diatomaceous earth is good for the garden where it kills earwigs and other pests that want to eat plants.  I'd never heard of using it in the kitchen.  It functions like a fine microscopic broken glass.  D.E. causes death by a thousand cuts, rendering the ant exoskeleton porous so they die of dehydration.  I've not heard of people putting it indoors.  Until now.  This guy swears by it.  http://www.vegetablegardener.com/item/8107/diatomaceous-earth-as-non-toxic-ant-killer (http://www.vegetablegardener.com/item/8107/diatomaceous-earth-as-non-toxic-ant-killer)
I've heard of people taking it internally, so it's not toxic, just fragments of silicon based exteriors of single celled plants, diatoms.

I just checked online and found this forum (I've used it before for other useful household advice).   They said there are two kinds of ants.  I've only had the ones who like sweets.  I know ants come for food sources, moisture, and they will eat sweets and fats.  So keeping the surfaces clean is crucial.  http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/ipm/msg0413433223779.html?10 (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/ipm/msg0413433223779.html?10)

That reminded me of this. One of my favorite group of comedians (+musicians, they make their own crazy instruments). It's about some guys making a jingle for a TV commercial for a clothes moth control product. One tiny detail: it's in Spanish, but you'll get the idea.

Drop an email. Seriously. I lived off free whoppers when I was in NJ simply by filling out the customer surveys on their website.

I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for those surveys, I would have died of malnutrition. I was worked like a rented mule and paid even less. In the entire time I lived with my uncle, we went to an actual supermarket ONCE. He bought steak, I got six cans of spinach and a bottle of red wine vinegar.

And got called a "bless'ed meatball" for my choices.

That was it. six cans of spinach.

Thankfully, customers did tip on the job. And since I looked like I was dying most of the time (I'm very pale, and turn bright red at the slightest amount of physical exertion) tips were good.

If the tip were snuck to me, a handshake with some cash, times were good. If the tip was passed to the boss (My uncle) times were lean.

Stores I frequent probably do not care for me, as I fill out the survey on what qualities they lack. Smashed bread because some poo kid decided to punch it? 3/10. Completely out of soda for an entire week? 0/10.

I think our local (shitty) walmart is on to this though, they're the only location I know of that not only does not ask about your shopping experience, they don't even print ads on the back of the receipt.

Seriously though, I do not miss receipt check survivalism.

Did the canned roast beef and bbq sauce sandwiches again. I drain the absolutely rank fluid it's packed in, fry it up quick in the fry pan, then pour some bbq sauce in it for flavor.

I was strongly against this stuff the first time I saw/smelled it, but is super quick, and it's about two bucks for a 12 ounce can.

Since our return I've taken to cooking household Caribbean food.  Things like peas and dumplings, dasheen, yams, fish in browning with carrots and onion, and some rice with saffron.  It's not far off what I was getting in St Lucia but sourcing dasheen is difficult and expensive, so most of the time I substitute it with cassava.

I've yet to get the portioning right as I'd some left over after feeding the 5000.

I've never tried dasheen. I've seen it in markets in Brazil but never in my country. Oddly it's unusual to find cassava (the tuber) in markets where I live but you can easily find cassava starch/flour.

All the major supermarkets here sell cassava but you have to go to certain areas (Caribbean strongholds) in London to get dasheen. Sweet potatoes are another "provision" that is a good substitute, but a minute to long in the water and...

Had a big pasta tonight as I was feeling really lazy.  It was red and green pepper, courgette and a sort of a red pesto I knocked up.  It was fab and 600g (before it was cooked) disappeared into 4.5 people.

I was hoping for a couple of packed lunches for the kids.  It'll have to be school dinners again.

I made angel hair pasta with zucchini, onion, garlic and toasted pignoli.  I begin by cooking the vegs in a large paella pan and then toss the cooked pasta into the mix, sprinkle w/pecorino romano.  It's quick and easy.  The zucchini is julienned into thin strips, onion in small dice and garlic sliced.  Once everything is prepped, it goes together quickly and makes a satisfying meal.

As if you can't get E. coli from produce!! These are well documented cases (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_United_States_E._coli_outbreak).
E. coli survives fridge temperatures, and it tolarates dry, salt, acid and modified-atmosphere, specially at low temperatures. But it CAN'T tolerate heat.

Realistically, what they really meant was that there wasn't a place for the pickers to poo, so they just poo wherever.

Some men just like to piss in the yard. We were in a party one day. Nice house, big plot. And one of my friends decided not to go inside but to pee in the garden. He fell in a hole. They were building something or planting a tree, I don't remember. We had to call the emergency services. They probably worked more on his drunkness than in his bones.

On the menu last night: fish empanadas for me and the hubby, caprese empanadas for the daughter. A lot of work but I do quite a few and then freeze some so I have them for another day.

I want to eat at your house!

We will probably have a green salad and some homemade tomato/thyme sauce over pasta.  The damn rats ate my first ripe cherry tomatoes of the season, so I'm on the warpath.  Wonder how they taste, skinned, gutted and marinated then grilled?

That sounds pretty good, the rat recipe in the video clip.

But the dish looked kinda whitish and boiled somehow. Not appetizing. Now sautƩed with leeks and carrots and peppers maybe...

I'm a "de facto" vegetarian but I'd eat rat if I was really hungry.

That's a whole pastry shop.  :)

Talking about calories gone wild:
Last night I did a gratin dauphinoise on steroids (potatoes, cream, butter, sauteed onions, garlic, and 3 kinds of cheese).
For dessert I did something typical from my country. It consists of layers of ladyfingers (savoiardi/ sponge fingers) soaked in moscato wine (Port or marsala work even better but they're way more expensive) and layers of a dulce de leche pudding, and topped with dulce de leche (the more the better). A calorie bomb!

I made an effort to cook baby artichokes last night (trimmed, steamed, tossed in olive oil then roasted--still too tough).  Clearly I need more practice.  Fortunately, we had a nice salad with a fresh peach galette for dessert, so that took the sting out of the failure.

The canned food companies have changed recipes many times over the years. Recently a lot of brands have dropped sodium amounts.

I noticed that kraft had changed their recipe a few months before they announced it and said that people couldn't taste the difference.

I've always hated that bit of smarketing cowpoo, I can always taste the difference.

Two foods I loved as a kid but make me want to puke now are corned beef hash and cocktail weiners.

Kid me was bless'ed weird.

Still can't stomach fish, and don't care for mushrooms.

But yeah, anything with a tomato based sauce tastes wrong now.

We cooked hoisin marinated boneless chicken thighs on the barbie with some rice and salad.  It turned out really well.  A Dean & Delucca recipe.  Some kind soul posted it here.  You marinate the chicken in the fridge overnight or for most of the day and then grill it for dinner.  Wowza.

Meh, the foreman grill I have now is perfectly fine, but if I ever find one of those again I will snap it up.

Wish I could get them to rotate out the cd's, they've had the same set. It's not so bad as "bank of america christmas 1998" but selection isn't that good either. Don't even know how to word such a request.

I did end up using the foreman last night for dinner, had a little bit of meat left so upgraded from grilled cheese sandwich to cheeseburger.

Not gonna lie, tonight was a new low.

Still want that burrito, even have the cash for it, just not up for the walk. I do about half the walk any time I need soda, but that second half just kills.

So I ate two chocolate pudding cups, a fruit cup, and some peanuts. If I can't work up the energy to boil up ramen, I need to talk to the psych. I feel worse on the higher dose. And I used to invent new foods when blind drunk.

I damn hate psych meds.

Is there a way to step back the dosage on the meds?  It sounds like it's having negative side effects if it's keeping you from taking short walks or cooking for yourself.

Sorry to hear about the pudding cups.  That sounds nasty.  I had old European style black bread with old spreadable cheese for lunch.  Now I feel like someone kicked me in the stomach.  I have a 4 hour final exam tomorrow night and I'm too stressed to cook and clearly need to get that old food outta the fridge.  Yuck.

I do miss your descriptions of new recipes on here.

I got my burrito today, it was an odd experience. First, he asked if I wanted "the works" on it. I'm not familiar with "the works" but I trust the dude, so I said sure. We watched lady gaga kill some people while he cooked it, he's like a freaking machine! Last time I phoned an order in he said ten minutes, paused, said, nah, I can get that done in six. And he was right.

Sure enough, it was a new high. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the flavors were popping. Onions were on deck, tomatoes were bursting with flavor, the avocado was sublime, and the cheddar was sharp. There were a few flavors I wasn't sure on but figure were part of the works. Apparently he doesn't use cillantro [thank god].

So it was too good. I was expecting hole in the wall burnt steak and some sort of green sauce, and instead found a moment of nirvana. How the golly can I be dissappointed when the food was BETTER than expected?

Either way I've had three dinners from there, so I've got enough material for a yelp review, now I have to guess my damn password to yelp.  :P

Saw Dr. Bro today, he was super cool, he managed to pull my blood panels because he was concerned too, but he said I'm doing surprisingly good. He thinks I just need to find something. We talked about it, and I really did just give up around 2010 and I've just kinda been ghosting. He also said in 30 years he's never heard of this psychiatric probation, and he wants to light in on the cop who pulled that poo, but I need to find the incedent report to do it, but I'm in carne coma mode right now.

McD's. Ugh. I used to get hit with McD craving once or twice a year, but I think this last meal has cured it. Realize now it's their onion mash and high level of sugar.

I've been focus grouping burger joints. Once I've hit all the spots in town, budget and health permitting, I'll post the results, but I can say so far McD is bottom of list, and their fries are especially horrid.

And this is a new McD's who have gone through the home office corporate brainwashing. So this is how the food is supposed to taste.

Their food is terrible.  I made the mistake of ordering a fish sandwich from their dollar menu about 5 years ago.  It was really late in the afternoon and I had not yet eaten lunch.  The sandwich was just awful.  They should have paid ME a dollar to eat it.

The tomatoes though, if I really did die last night? Those tomatoes are confirmation I didn't go to the bad place.

I wonder if any of the 5000 commented on the lack of seasoning? I mean, you'd have needed a shitload of salt and pepper and there was no mention of it.

[7:16 PM] No clue.

I was going to go to the grocery to see what was on clearance, but they had three cop cars in front of it and the dog was out.

So I went to CVS and bought soda.

Normally I could buy an overpriced Pizza there, but their freezer died a while back, and they've only bothered to restock the ice cream.

Tell her the build quality is poo. Just happens to be true. When I bought my 360s, I got a used one from before mattdick became CEO. They're still building 360's, but they removed components. Also, you don't want to end up with whqtever the future rrod is. So wait at least six months, for the part pipeline to stabilize.

On to the food! I had resigned myself to more spaghetti. It's not bad spaghetti, it's even got proper noodles instead of the flat wheat poo mom buys, but anything for repeated dinners is morale damaging.

But my roommate brought me a carne asada! Made my week.

Burritos. Mom bought uncooked tortillas, so that was interesting. Beats the crap out of the lousy wheat ones she likes, but putting food into a balloon is weird. Salsa was marked medium, but was pepper spray, which explains the very low price and very full shelf. Still tasted good, and it took my mind off difficulties, which is always nice.

Myself and and the good lady decided to have a few food themed nights.
Saturday was French night
Beef bourguignon , shallots, French wine, Baguette, Asparagus, dauphinoise potatoes for the main course.
Normandy apple tart for pudding.  Washed down with  Cote de Provence Rose wine.
We possible should not have gone to the pub for a pint in the afternoon as we had a couple then family turned up so all was a little rushed but still lovely.
Next will be an Italian night.
We are struggling on the USA night as to what is typically American food ?? ideas anyone

Cheeseburgers, "freedom fries", putting bacon on stuff, Apple pie isn't American at all...,
Bigass steak, Diner food. I dunno what the origins of mac and cheese is, but the Canadians would probably fight us for it.

Midwest is a lot of fried stuff among other things.  Think "Cracker Barrel" menu.  Fried chicken, country fried steak, country ham (read as salty).  Veggies are mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, green beans, okra.  Desserts are the standard pies, cherry, apple, peach (cobbler), pumpkin.  Drinks?  Milk is a staple but there's also iced tea (sweat in the south, raw in the north).  Alcohol?  Whiskey/bourbon, redneck beer (Schlitz, Natty Lite, Beast Lite, Icehouse, ad nauseum), moonshine, etc.  Finish it all off with a big chaw of tobaccy.

Schlitz, Natty Lite, Icehouse. All beers that are really vomit in a can. At least you didn't mention steel reserve.

Cheapest beer I can stand is pabst. My grandpa helped their accountancy department restructure when they switched from soda to beer, so I've always had a soft spot for it, and it helps that it's dirt cheap most of the time.

But the worst, worst beer I have ever had, is Beer 30. You can taste the cancer causing plastic lining. You could chill it with nitrogen, and it wouldn't help.

Sammy's is a pretty good beer. Plus they richard around with different formulas, so if you don't like one, you can pick another!

I'd say a bbq burger is a bit more quintessentially American than pan frying or foreman grilling, so long as you don't buy the nasty frozen pucks.

One thing I thought was American, but learned otherwise, are 40 ouncers. Not only do they seem to not exist much outside of California, even in California, the man wants to get rid of em, so you mostly have to settle for a hidden tall boy when you go to the beach (20 ounces)

This has golly nothing to do with a dinner though. whoops!

Last night I had weird mac and cheese. It was still kraft, but they sold out of the regular, so it was twisty noodles. INGENIOUSLY, their swirl pattern meant the stuff stirred itself! Not so inspiring, it's been shrink rayed. a box of kraft used to be four servings, now it's two. If I was a parent, I'd be pissed. As a fat man, two servings was enough for my dinner.

Gardein Crispy Mandarin "Chicken" with onions, celery and basmati rice.

Gardein makes delicious frozen meat substitutes.  We like that we can haul them out of the freezer and have a tasty dinner in about 15 minutes.  I don't know if they sell this in the UK, but it's worth experimenting with if they do.

Just heated up a bit of what I cooked earlier, and it tastes better reheated, wtf.

Super happy with it though, I've always had a visceral dislike of chicken, which got dialed up to 11 when I had to prep supermarket chicken. Imagine reaching into near frozen stenchy blood, tying back the wings, wrapping things up in a disturbingly bondage like twine, and then impaling 3-5 chickens up the ass with metal poles, dousing them in seasoning, then assembling them in a revolver like array, and then lighting the array on fire.

Oh, and when it's done, you get to burn your hands on delicious smelling chicken and those impalement spikes because the safety gear is a million years old. Then you get to temp check and bag the chicken, which is surprisingly difficult. Those bags tear the skin off or fog easy, and if either happens, it's back to blood river.

For some reason I did enjoy heat sealing the bags, probably because it meant I was done.

Oh, and through all of it, smiles, and excellent customer service is required.

For minimum bless'ed wage.

Weird, I hated aidells, it felt like the casing was made out of string or something. Maybe I got a bad batch.

I went a week without actual meat, so while walking the dog I was stricken like an addict and got two jumbo jacks. Cheeseless, because the gits add another dollar to the price without telling you. They just ask "cheese?" As if it's free. Jerks.

Either way, I'm sitting fat and happy now.

I'm not a big fan of sausages, period.  But these, I will eat.  They're a convenience for when we're too tired to cook and feel like a little meat.

I had leftovers from the soup I made a few nights ago.  Potage Parmentier is what it's called, aka leek and potato soup from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  It's got some butter and chicken broth in it as well as fresh parsley.  I couldn't have been simpler to prepare, but it was delicious and filling.  We had a salad and then some buttermilk cornbread to go with it.  That was a feast.

I don't believe I've tried that even though, as a pescatarian, I've tried many, many meat substitutes.

Quorn makes one far too windy and doesn't really prove worthwhile by the time it's on your plate.  There are some good soya alternatives that are usually store brand, and some of the burgers made from soya, my meat eating family prefer to regular beef ones.

The best veggie stuff I could recommend here are the products made by Cauldron (https://www.cauldronfoods.co.uk/). The problem is, their packet portions have steadily become smaller, and the prices of their products have steadily become larger. It hasn't priced me out, but they have annoyed me away.

smokes, thanks for the info re Quorn.  They don't sell Cauldron in the U.S., unfortunately.  Beyond Meat makes good chicken and burger alternatives, using mostly pea protein, I believe.

Aidell's is a question of taste, but I stay away from the ones that contain cheese because it's sort of like a deep fried Mars bar to me, overkill in the fat dept.

I like artichoke and garlic the best.  The chicken/apple isn't bad although a little sweet.  Spicy Mango is hot and a little sweet, the Chorizo (chicken) is good, Habanero & Green Chile is good, and if you eat pork, the Cajun style Andouille.  I like the spinach feta sometimes.

Grocery Outlet often has packs on sale for 3.99, so I'll stock up when I see those as they freeze well and thaw quickly in a bowl of warm water (still in package).  Safeway or Target will have sales where they're around 5 bucks.  I think there are these stores near you.  We've had Safeway's groovy brand Open Nature and they aren't too bad and they occasionally have sales on those for around the same price.

We used to catch bluefish.  They're a type of striped bass, if memory serves.  They can be delicious.  I haven't had any in years.  The Chesapeake Bay used to teem with them, but they were overfished so there was a moratorium placed on catching them.  Their population has rebounded, but as I'm not in the area any longer they're harder to come by.

We baked it in the oven in aluminum foil, probably with some lemon.  I haven't cooked it for 20 years.  Sad as it was a regular part of my childhood.

We had Aidell's spicy mango chicken sausage with jalapeƱo tonight.  A good quick dinner.  I had mine on sourdough toast with some mustard.  This is the kind of thing you can keep in the freezer and avail yourself of when you don't have the time or inclination to cook.
