Title: Would you like a drink?
Post by: xtopave on January 22, 2011, 05:33:51 PM
Right now I'm drinking a Red Lager Beer I like a lot.

What do you usually drink, want to drink, never tried, want to try, will never drink again?

For an everyday beverage I drink diet lemon-lime soda with a splash of fruit juice because I HATE diet soda.

Alcohol- other than gin there is really nothing I dont drink. Very rarely scotch because the only ones I can stomach are outrageously priced. Mostly beer (ambers mostly) and vodka. I expanded on all of these in budget bartender too.  ;D

I hate diet sodas too. The only one that I can tolerate is lemon-lime adding some real lemon juice. Diet colas are well... horrible to me.

I drink diet 7up and diet Sierra Mist that way too. I usually drink them with cranberry or orange juice.

I don't drink alcohol. I never drank it before my 21st bday (strict parent) and haven't had a drop since my 21st bday (had a horrible experience). I'm always the nerd who asks for virgin drinks at parties. :-[ :D

It's not very often I drink, but if I go to a pub I'll drink real ales or bitters. On the odd occasion I drink at home it'll be gin & tonic or port (with cheese & crackers) or a bottle of red wine.

In my younger days I drank like a fish, usually lagers and neat vodka chasers. One night me and a friend were drinking - he had Jameson's Irish whisky chasers - and after about eight lagers and vodkas I realised my friends whiskys were building up a bit so started on them as well. I don't recall the final tally of alcohol consumption, but later that night when I was vomiting outside the pub I had a moment of epiphany and decided I wasn't doing that again. That was about 17 years ago and haven't had more than two consecutive drinks since. Coincidentally I was in a pub yesterday with the same friend (for the first time in about 5 or 6 months) and had two pints of Cain's bitter (highly recommended for any bitter drinkers btw).

As an every day drink I drink carbonated water/soda water. My favorite drinks are gin & tonic, Italian aperitifs (Cinzano, Gancia, etc), red wine, and Scotch (which I don't drink often because they have dollar prices and that's 4 times more expensive for me). In weekdays I drink only one alcoholic drink. In weekends and parties I drink more. I used to drink more when I was younger, but now I'm more moderate.

I forgot to say my everyday drink is black coffee which I drink throughout the day every day. If I have soft drinks it's either Dr Pepper or diet coke, sometimes fresh orange or milk with breakfast.

At the mo' I'm drinking a glass of St Merac Cognac to wash down the couple of glasses of Piat Pere et Fils Reserve Shiraz I had with dinner.  Later I'll have a cup of fresh black coffee made with my new coffee machine I received for Christmas, and in the morning I'll be back on the tea.

My friends couldn't wait to get me drunk since they'd never seen me that way.

I don't recall the drink tally on my 21st bday, but I remember what I drank.  I had rum, wine coolers, Vodka, J?germeister, Champaign, beer, wine, and strawberry daiquiris. I probably should have had alcohol poisoning, but I was eating pizza while drinking. The end result was me walking around my friend's apt with a 30 gallon trash bag with two holes cut out of each side of the bag tied to my wrists as a portable vomit catcher. That's when my moment of epiphany happened.  :D

I don't drink diet soda everyday. I usually just drink plain water and green tea.

I know that now but I didn't know back then.  ::) Of course my friends didn't tell me that either.  I still use the experience as an excuse not to drink. :D

I rarely drink gin now and hardly ever drink anything straight.  I think it's a Pavlovian reflex of some sort.  I smell alcohol, my stomach immediately burns.  So I cheat.  Besides, I like mixed drinks better.

The tall bottle in the middle is what I had last night.  No one bothered sharing with me since they were all drinking beer.

Daily I drink water, fizzy water, and apple juice most. I drink hot tea at night, or sometimes in the morning.. Constant Comment, or green. I drink milk with deserts, of sometimes for breakfast. I'll also drink other kinds of juice. I'll drink chocolate milk, or hot chocolate on a whim. In summer sometimes I drink limeade, or sun tea. I'll drink soda of it's the only choice, but I don't like any cola. If a place has orangina, or izze's I drink those. I don't drink anything sugar free. Alcohol.. I'd choose a good quality shot of tequila, whisky, or saki. Mixed dink I'd order bloody mary. I like Mexican beer, Japanese beer, or random beers by small breweries.

Hangover... This is what works best for me (It's kinda preventive rather than curative and maybe that's why this works): When you're about to go to bed you drink at least 400 cm3 of water and an Ibuprofen. Since you have an ulcer that might not be that good for you though.
You won't feel perfectly but at least you'll be able to at least wake up.  :D   Again this doesn't work the morning after.

It wasn't just an alcohol hangover, there were some south American influences to deal with too.  I have to admit I have just had a glass of Chianti, and, I feel quite good now.  Delicate as a daisy, but quite good nonetheless.

Yeah, they all taste like water.  Truthfully though, I find a subtle difference between all the major beers and you can get quite attatched to the nuance. I find a huge difference in aftertaste between Peroni and Moretti and therefore don't drink the former.  A little harder to tell with Australian and American stuff, but I do find a significant difference between the two.

a hard one to answer
depending on the offers on in the UK and what lager.

12 cans of Carlsberg (440ml) in Asda is £8.00 ($12 ish)
15 bottles of Budweiser (300ml) again in Asda is £10.00 ( $14 ish)
vary's from supermarket to supermarket to shop.

Argentina:
1 can (354 cm3) = 5$ (1 U$S = 4.3 $)
1 bottle (970 cm3) = 7$

Brazil:

Spent a while near Rheims and tasted champagne they hardly ever exported.
Fantastic place

I used to drink a Champagne cocktail at the Atlantic Bar and Grill (deceased) that is apparently unknown (as I can't find a reference to it anywhere). It was called a "Screaming Eagle" and it was basically Champagne (preferably Cristal) and a shot of Crème de menthe. It was the absolute dogs doodahs.

Seems like a hoity toity bunch.  You have to get on a waiting list just to get information ABOUT their product.  I guess there's an internal waiting list to actually purchase it after that.

I don't they're connected in any way as you cannot produce Champagne outside Epernay for one and it hardly looks like a cocktail type of business (where are the mini umbrellas I ask?).

Actually, that whole "It's not champagne if it's not from the Champagne Region of France" isn't really followed anymore (at least that's what I heard).

Actually, that whole "It's not champagne if it's not from the Champagne Region of France" isn't really followed anymore (at least that's what I heard).

A lot of European countries have their own "Champagne" like Cava and Spumante etc which are sparkling wines, but not even the French can call their other sparkling stuff Champagne if not from the Epernay region.

The second fermenation method was discovered in, and is unique to the region because of their climate, and both (the method and the name) are fiercely protected by law.  You can get away with it if you create an area called Champagne somewhere in Cali' and produce wine there, then you can call the sparkling variety "Champagne" without fear of copyright infringement.  If you're lucky and have good lawyers that is.

You can still get away with using "méthode champenoise" on the label of sparkling wines (outside the European Union and USA that is).

Yes I always found it odd that when in the Caribbean I drink a "Champagne" called Andre that is clearly labelled Champagne.  While here in te U.K many a few years back, a health drink called "Elderflower Champagne" was brought onto the market and Epernay sued them.

The bad thing about that Caribbean (sorry U.S.A) stuff is: you are promised 2 bottles of Champers in your room upon arrival (us in the E.U knowing the law would be expencting Lanson or something), only to get a couple of bottles of what I would call fizzy apple juice that you could get in any local store for the equivalent to a couple of £s.  Be warned.

This might surprise you, but the English rather than the French were the ones who invented Champagne in the 17th century. And with the word "invented" I mean making sparkling wine deliberately, and through a reproducible process. The first French documents that refer to Champagne date from 1718. These papers report that the first time this happened was around 20 years earlier (bringing the date to circa 1698). In England however, Sir George Etheredge made mention of sparkling wine as early as 1676.

http://www.champagneinfo.net/Productie/ChampagneHistorie/tabid/174/Default.aspx (http://www.champagneinfo.net/Productie/ChampagneHistorie/tabid/174/Default.aspx)

the law referring to champagne is similar to Parmesan, Stilton, EU protest food names.
still applies to Champers

Post by: smokester on May 04, 2012, 02:56:33 PM
I think what that's saying is the English discovered a way to reproduce Champagne artificially.  It wasn't really invented but rather an accident caused by a double fermentation that meant the wine froze, then thawed and fermented again causing the bubbles.  This is also the reason why Epernay protect it as theirs as this process couldn't happen naturally outside the region - supposedly.

so agree about the invented / stumbled upon  part . ;D
If you were to produce an excellent sparkling wine which sold millions of bottles and named it
champagne , then i would guess the fine people of the 5 areas allowed to name their sparkling wine as champagne, would come a knocking with a big Nebuchadnezzar  of sparkling champers  to politely tell you to change the name of your produce.

This is normally the case with product of originality produce.

That site you linked to gives about 5 different versions of the history behind it, but I consider it French 'cos it's called a French name. Had it been called Scunthorpe, I'd be pissed if the French tried to claim it as theirs.

I give my son a little of my beer when I'm working at home with him. Nothing too strong but as I have 2 or 3 I feel it's only fair when he works as hard as I do (he's 9).  My daughter who is 6 will only drink Champagne though, in an eggcup which I'm sure the French would consider illegal.

I'm drinking a homemade tangerine liqueur a friend of mine gave me. It's made with a technique where the peels never touch the alcohol. Apparently it takes several months to be ready. It has a light color and it's quite strong.

I've made my own mandarinetto with a Sicilian recipe I've found online and it turn out fantastic! My neighbour has a huge mandarine tree and half of it is in my property. I've made 4 bottles and gave away 2 and now I regret it.  ;D
I caramelized the peels of a 2nd batch.
And now I'm making lemoncello with lemons from my mother's lemon tree bc mine is too small and is suffering from some plague.

My wife bought me some really good Lemoncello for Christmas but it hardly made it past Boxing day.  I have been refilling the lovely bottle with stuff I can buy at the supermarket but in all honesty it's diabolical. I may have to take a brief jaunt to Sicily just to stock up.

That Mandarinetto sounds like heaven on earth.  Don't be surprised if I turn up at your doorstep.

2/3rds? I usually fight my husband for half of any bottle of wine so I guess you're lucky.  ;D
Judging by the price that must be a very good Malbec. The other day my family did a whip-round to buy Festivo Malbec directly to the winery so we got a very good price. We used to do that with Alfredo Roca but those days are gone.  :D
And yesterday a friend gave me 2 bottles (+ 2 champagne flutes) of Cava Freixenet Cordon Negro.

he has a licence to drive a car but parking in the city center is awful and his insurance for 3 months is ridiculous.
After collecting last night , driving past 5 crashes with fire engines / ambulances / police i'm glad he doesnt drive.
