This is an announcement to introduce a Chatroom that is soon to be incorporated here, and this is a preview of how it looks and some tips on how to use it.
Some features:1. This is for the different channels which can be thought of as "rooms".
2. This is to change how the room is displayed to you.
3. This will reflect your own ID and the options available to you and is collapsible.
4. This is another member's ID and the options you have for them, it is also collapsible by clicking on it.
5. Clicking this will tell you which channel the member is in (how to find them).
6. This will show you the commands if you want to enter them by hand. You need to start with a forward slash immediately followed by the command.
7. This will show the settings for you to personalise your preferences (it only affects you).
8. This button shows a list of current members in the chatroom

Here are a couple of other things you may want to take note of:
This one is how you can see how many, if any, people are in the chatroom, and can be found at the top of the page.

and this one shows exactly who is in the chatroom and it is found at the bottom of the mainpage.

This is a big installation and will have to be done in maintenance mode in case it breaks the site. It will probably be here tomorrow so keep an eye on the menu bar for a new link called "chat".

There is one important issue that you should all be aware of regarding the chatroom:
At the moment this site is set up so only senior staff can see member's IP addresses, and that is more for peace of mind for some members than it is any kind of security issue (some of us are know from elsewhere..). However, if you choose to chat, all staff will be able to see your IP temporarily. This shouldn't really matter as it is only another 3 or 4 people and most of us are friends that trust each other anyhow.
But please be aware of this issue.
CMF. I will attempt to get it integrated about 10am GMT (Sunday) so you should be tucked up in bed then anyhoo. It should take about 20 minutes if all goes well and it is very quiet at that time so it shouldn't interupt much.

The chatroom is there for when people have exhausted the boards but still want to chat, and you can post-dame there until you heart's content.

Chat does not count as posts. We're not all about post count here (or shouldn't be). Just look at my count and I've been here as long as anyone (shy of smokester and binks by a couple weeks).

That is interesting...so there are no threads that require a higher post count??..? That is my only reason for any concerns regarding number of posts. Other wise I couldn't care less.

The problem is that there is a fine line between what is a valid and invalid post. A loose but funny comment that is barely connected to the topic in hand, can be just as worthy as a technical response. The problem is that off-topic posts can sometimes modulate the thread into a a private chat between 2 menbers and that is the reason I have installed the chatroom. Bombing threads can be essential as some really need to stay on track - threads like the "Ugly mug" for instance - but it isn't a punitive measure we inflict on members, quite the opposite as it should make the place more consistent as in turn, enjoyable. That doesn't mean that people should stop posting, it just means that try and stay on track in threads that are of greater interest, and don't be surprised if if a post bomb lands if you don't.
Although post counts don't matter in regards to status or popularity, there is a ranking system and for some reaching the next level has its own element of entertainment or satisfaction so I wouldn't say that they are insignificant to everybody.
I may run a "ice slide" competition soon that may have a postcount or game points reward, so look out for that :)

We originally did have it enabled, but I was worried that after I invited you that I'd need to hack the code allow a longer number - and I am not saying whether I thought it would have been prefixed by a - or a +...
