Does anyone regularly watch documentaries? This is a thread for recommendations of good non-fiction or educational programs.
We've been watching two series produced by the BBC with the V&A museum. One on Metalworks and the other Ceramics: a fragile history. These are not readily available for viewing on US tv, and there is not much good on design produced in the States compared to the UK.

Virtually any documentary produced by the BBC is a guaranteed winner. 80% of my Sky+ box's memory is chocked full of them.
I particularly liked Walking with Dinosaurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_with_Dinosaurs) and Frozen Planet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frozen_Planet).
And every Horizon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizon_%28BBC_TV_series%29) ever made.

I was trying to find the dinosaur documentary I had watched. It was talking about a decline in their species before that they were destroyed by said natural disaster.
I looked.
I love watching Henry Rollins. He did a line of documentaries with National Geographic.

I love documentaries...in theory but I never seem to watch any. I've "acquired" some, say "Planet Earth" and they sit on my hdd until I need the space. Sad I know.

We've watched By Royal Appointment, sort of interesting, Pugin: God's Architect is really very good. There was a series on Saville Row, I've got a number of the design related Genius of Design series queued up. They're great. It surprises me that this programming doesn't usually make it to US Public Television. We get lots of mysteries (Inspector Morse, Prime Suspect, etc) and the historical dramas (Dickens dramatizations, the full range of Jane Austen stories, etc.) but as for the non fiction, only the occasional British Antiques Road Show for series. The Noid was a good source for this, but there are other places to find them.

I watched The Hobart Shakespeareans yesterday and I loved it. About this 5th grade teacher in Los Angeles. I love this guy and feel he should get the Nobel Prize.* You can rent it on DVD and watch a trailer at POV online.

I know that Americans recently had the publicly funded health care debate and some here were interested as to how it operated in countries where it already existed. The BBC is now running a show called "Keeping Britain Alive: The NHS in a day (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rk2d0)" which I am watching at the moment.
In truth it is equally about the individuals needing treatment as it is the system itself, but I am really enjoying it in a rather sad sort of way (seeing people in pain is never fun).
It is a good show in my opinion, but if you were also interested to see how a State run system works for the masses, then this may well be of interest to you.

hmm, good doco's....I have a large collection but I can't think of the last one I watched that was that interesting.
As I mentioned in another thread, Dark Matters is quite a good television programme with a documentary-esque feel.
The Man Who Sold The World is a fantastic doco on Steve Rocco, founder of World Industries skateboard company and father of modern skateboard company's operating models. Far better than the Bones Brigade Biography that came out end of last year. But to anyone that grew-up in the 80's will at least enjoy the nostalgia of all, and get to find out how Tony Hawk managed to get the dubbed best skater in the world when he so obviously (to a skater of the time) was not.
I don't watch Dawkins doco's, they make me want to remove him from the gene pool. He does more harm than good. He should stick to gene research.

Steely Dan: Aja.
Pink Floyd: Dark side of the moon. There's a whole series of these. I think they were produced for British television. I've only seen two, I think, but they are very good. Include interviews with the musicians and producers and discussions of the making of the albums, concepts behind them, music theory, etc. Pretty interesting.

The series is called "Classic Albums" and it ran for quite a while on cable over here.
I've seen a few of them, and it really depends on the album (or should I say the musicians/band behind the album) on whether it is interesting.
I watched Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life on the telly, and that was wonderful (excuse the pun), but I bought(!) the Frank Zappa - Apostrophe (')/Over-Nite Sensation and that was horrible, mainly because Frank is dead and it was a bunch of sycophants (how can that be when he is dead) blowing smoke up Frank's dead arse (why? he is dead, he can't hurt you any more, your income is not dependant on him tolerating you). We got to hear some great performers talk, but not play. We got to listen to Frank's kids talk as if they had some input into the albums (which they didn't). Frank was the producer, not his son, but we got to hear Ahmet speak about the recordings as if he there in the control room moving the faders for him.

He always had the best sidemen playing with him and was a truly polished professional.

I would have loved to see Zappa live, but have to make do with live recordings instead....
Keeping with the music theme we are now on, BBC did a great doco on Blondie called One Way Or Another. It goes through their early days at CBGB's to them pretending certain members never existed at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I started watching a very good documentary about Art Nouveau from the BBC last night (3 parts about an hour each) Sex and Sensibility: the allure of Art Nouveau. It surveys important artists in various media across Europe from the turn of the last century. Worth the licence fee in its self,Powerful/horrendous/shocking I didn't even realise he covered some of the worst atrocities in Africa / Lebanon.

Reinforces my opinion that there should be an immediate introduction of a 100% inheritance tax (after an allowance of, say, a million) (maybe a half). That'd sort the hooray henry's out.
I like what the guy said about not being able to change to minds of the 1%, but if the other 99% got on-board this would be over tomorrow.
With a good supply of pitchforks I'd say that's absolutely true.

If talking head documentaries don't bore you or if the headline grabbing title doesn't scare you off (it sounds like conspiracy theory) check this out. Particularly if you live in the USA. I read economic history/theory now and then and this is a Must Watch piece if you wonder what's going on, financially, in this country. It's seven hours long... so just watch the first 50 minutes and tell me if you haven't learned something about the Federal Reserve, the banking system, and why we are losing jobs and purchasing power, etc. At the 50 minute point, the gist does start sounding a bit fringe.
At about midpoint, the sometimes loony/sometimes not fringe rears it's head giving me the impression the serious first half was all about gaining credence and then trying to rope the viewer in.

Highly emotional topic but I completely see where youre coming from. I have many issues with the storyline but the general consensus of the story has my support.

New one. 3 parter. Fantastic resolution for YouTube. You need to watch the whole series. Just when a topic has taken you to the lowest stage you will be up again with the next. Im hoping to watch it a second time with my daughter. So many things I could never explain that are important in living our lifes.

Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners. BBC documentary produced in 2015. It's excellent and amazing in the breadth of the ways that the system of slavery developed and changed many aspects of British society. You can view it on youtube, but I recommend checking mvgroup for a version with better resolution.

I've been reading about the Kray twins. There's several films made about them, some dramatic re-enactments, some documentaries.
Can anyone recommend one that's well done? We'll watch either. There's one with two guys from Spandau Ballet in it. Is that any good? Thanks in advance.

This is England - in our weather a ragtop is completely redundundant. (I imagine that there are only a few of us left that remember what a "Triumph Spitfire" is!)
Here in the U.K we are the most likely to buy soft top cars in Europe. Apparently twice and much as the Italians and 10 times more than the Spanish.
Maybe it's because the mechanisms last much longer here making them more attractive.
