That sounds like fun Aelthric. I bet it gets your teeth white too.
How do you start going about this sort of thing? It may well be something I'd like to try in the future.

First of all: WOW!! You are my hero, aelthric! I've been dreaming of doing something like that since high school with a friend of mine. We're both mums with children now. Maybe when we get older we'll do it.

and also something they call conditioner, this stops the brew from frothing up into the condenser coil and tainting your product) ;D
I believe they're siloxanes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydimethylsiloxane). They act as surfactants preventing foam originated by sugars that remain in the liquid (remnants that haven't been fermented) to go up and into the coils.
But I could be wrong so don't quote me. :-\ ;D

I'm confused. While researching the items listed it appears that you cannot distil any spirit at without a licence due to health and safety issues (like I believe that). I couldn't find any limits or other domestic loopholes that allow it.
Not that I particularly care what the law says about what I "privately" should and shouldn't be doing in my home, but if the risk of combustion is quite high then I can understand why they wouldn't want the winos around the corner doing this recreationally.
Now I understand why pirates are pirates.

BTW the air still is also excellent for separating "essential oils" so should the Rossers come a knocking I am a New Ager with a Penchant for essential oils ;) YARRRRR

Spirits are liable for Spirits Duty as soon as they have been distilled or manufactured.
Spirits Duty Rates
The current rate of Spirits Duty is £26.81 per litre of pure alcohol.
I read in the U.S (Dakota) it is a flat $100 a year.

£26.81 per litre seems a bit steep considering how much cheap and nasty spirits cost in supermarkets....
Mind you they are generally only 35 - 40% alcohol which comes to £9.38 at 35% per litre and since I have seen bottles for as little as £15 per litre sort of makes me wonder how these supermarket chains can do it at those prices...
The Dakotas are notorious for being culturally conservative. I don't think you'd like it there. I think Vodka is a much broader category of spirit than rum. Vodka can be made from wheat, potatoes, all kinds of stuff. I always thought rum was derived from sugar cane plants. As to the legal position of this distilling, any person in the UK can produce 2500 litres of "Bio Fuel Ethanol" before they require either a distillers license or need to pay duty and since I own a trangia (An alcohol burning camping stove) and it works with this distillate very well we will from this point be referring to the rum / vodka as "BIO FUEL" ;)

Well got the next batch of mean brew under way, this time used 5kg White refined cane sugar and 1.5kg molasses so we will see how this turns out....
After a couple of weeks storage the last brew has begun to take on the distinctive Rum flavour at last ;D

friend made a rather large batch and binned it as he was told they were poisonous. we couldn't find out for certainty that they were poisonous . diff sites state different things

Wiki says it's related to hawtorns. I know some Crataegus species are poisonous. I'd be coward enough not to try it.

various sites comment about a lot of berries being poisonous to a certain degree.This is the only berry he can not find in any brewing book.
Nutmeg is reported to induce hallucinogenic effects.

In the Caribbean they generally spice their rum to make it more interesting. They are rarely the same in any two rum shacks and I can personally vouch that some of them have been so good that I would travel back there just to taste it once again.

That is fascinating. I regularly enjoy licorice based beverages like Pernod and Anisette Ricard, but haven't had Absinthe. It will be interesting to hear how yours turns out.
