Many days I eat eggs over easy and wheat toast for lunch.  It's easy and cheap.

My parakeet really likes wheat toast.  So when I sit at the table, it zips over to the side of the cage closest to me and paces back and forth until the crust of bread is forthcoming.  He loves to chew on it.  In a way, he's an agreeable lunch companion.  Sings a little and otherwise, just hangs out.

I eat pretty much anything I feel like but since I do heavy labor for a living (tree trimmer) and only eat once a day, I don't worry about my caloric intake. That's not to say I don't watch what I eat.

My son is on a diet as we had a letter through that put his BMI at the higher end of overweight.  It's my fault as I intentionally feed him well, and always have, as I'd rather him be over-nourished than under.  But, he is off the treats by his own initiative and he is putting the missus and myself to shame.

A proper little inspiration he is.

Congratulations to smokester jr.!! It's so good that he's motivated. It could be a problem with preteens. Sometimes they get angry and rebel against those kind of changes.

I dont understand. Your sons SCHOOL sent a note home saying that he was overweight?!?!?!?! I think that is hideous and not because Im fat, because how is his weight ANY issue of theirs?

I used to work in a program for MI and stroke prevention and we used to do screening tests at high schools (glycemia, cholesterolemia, BMI, among other stuff) for statistical studies, etc. Of course we did them on kids whose parents authorised the procedures. The results were available for those parents.

OK, you had lil approved guinea pigs, I have no issue with that. If my child were labeled as "fat" I would be very upset. Luckily we never had that problem but many of her adorable classmate from preschool on had TYPICAL chubby phases and grew to have perfectly normal body mass. I find that very offensive that a school would feel they have the right to call any kid fat.

We caught several cases of genetic conditions (hyperlipidemias, diabetes, etc) that otherwise would have been diagnosed too late. We created awareness about a lot of health related issues (smoking habits among many). No, all in all not a bad thing.

I dont understand. Your sons SCHOOL sent a note home saying that he was overweight?!?!?!?! I think that is hideous and not because Im fat, because how is his weight ANY issue of theirs?

I believe it's a local authority initiative that is designed to identify whether children, or rather their parents, have the information about how to ensure they supply a healthy diet to some degree.  Obese children are far more likely to develop diabetes and other health issues, let alone the social problems they'll encounter when going to secondary school which is this year for my son's class.

They cannot force anybody to do anything but the parents of children that are identified as overweight to obese, are given information about portion sizes and food types that will improve their child's health.  I have to say it taught me a thing or 2, like a portion should be roughly the size of your fist. Which is handy (no pun intended) as I have Hulk hands.

In all honesty there is a section of our society that don't give a damn about what experts say about nutrition, and feed their children on the same crap that they eat.  This was highlighted when Jamie Oliver tried to overhaul our school dinner system and some mothers refused to acknowledge it and were filmed taking orders and handing out whatever the kids wanted to eat.

That's exactly what happens with my daughter. Chocolate and in 2nd place ice cream. (Who can blame her really  :D)
Sometimes I don't know how to handle that craving of her. We negotiate every piece of chocolate on a daily basis.  :-\

My daughter's attitude toward food improved immensely once I got her to cook with me.  The last thing she was going to do was leave her own food, as she insisted that everyone else eat every last morsel.

You gotta love reverse psychology.
