Title: Ya Outta Watch This
Post by: tarascon on January 17, 2013, 04:59:30 PM
I checked the categories and didn't see a thread for Film recommendations so here we go.

Post a movie or two that you think are worth watching. Try to keep your list to no more than two films per post so we can all contribute something. I say this because at another site I'd see posts with, literally, dozens of films listed. I know it can be exciting for film freaks to share their stuff but one can always come back and post again.  :)

An actor I watch out for: Michael Shannon.

Two small films... gems.
1.Shotgun Stories  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0952682/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0952682/)
2.Take Shelter  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675192/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675192/)

Quite like the look of number 2

Shotgun Stories is also very good and, despite the title, plays nicely against the viewer's expectations. The film plays out like a modern day Greek tragedy.

Anther film which plays against the usual tropes of the subject matter is Clean, Shaven by Lodge Kerrigan. The use of sound in this film is very subtle (and I don't mean the soundtrack).

I knew there was one somewhere.

I'd love to play this game but I only have a PC and an Xbox. I hate games being exclusive to one platform.

Me too. It's why I watched the walkthrough.

Top of the Lake. Really smart TV series partly directed by Jane Campion. Filmed and set in New Zealand.

With Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan from Children of Men (Sid) and David Wenham from Lord of the Rings (Faramir), Lucy Lawless from Xena: Warrior Princess, and more. Great cast.

I liked Elysium and Lone Survivor... Although there is a movie made that is more realistic, and although Mark played Marky Soldier, instead of Soldier.

I also liked the new one with Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington.. 2 Guns

It also features Thomas M. Wright from The Bridge.
I watched 4/6 episodes yesterday.

Just finished this. Wow. Brilliant.

Instead of Documentary Recommendations, I'll post these here so I don't have to edit my last post there nor double-post.

Kabbalah Me Not a great doc about the mysteries of mystical Judaism but interesting enough. http://www.villagevoice.com/2014-08-20/film/kabbalah-me/full/

The Green Prince If you decide to watch one of these two documentaries, I'd say check this one out--a well-made film about the complicated and toxic relationship between Palestinians and Israelis. http://www.musicboxfilms.com/the-green-prince-movies-107.php

We don't have a problem with double-posting in this site, tarascon. I mean, the boss bans himself (http://www.diasfora.co.uk/index.php?topic=1140.msg259410#msg259410) in the "Ban the person above" thread!  ;D

"The Green Prince" looks interesting and it's in Utube.

Possibly.

I grabbed that "The Green Prince" on your recommendation as my labourers and my main supplier are Bangladeshi and Iraqi respectively, so Islam seems to be our main topic of conversation these days. I thought that doc' might throw up a good debate or 3.
