Is there anything I should know before i try to install a second hdd in my pc.
I have a
BIOSTAR GF8200C M2+motherboard
SAMSUNG DVDWBD SH-B083L ATA Device
Sata 250gb hdd
IDE 250gb hdd
No Graphic card.
Before when i have tried to add a second sata HDD Windows 7 froze at start up at the starting windows screen then rebooted.
do i have to alter bios ? put jumpers in ?
any advice would be grateful as i may / may not add directly to the motherboard, just continue to use the hdd caddy.

Hmm... I think I would use an IDE to SATA converter if there were any problems. No jumpers are necessary with SATA with any mobo I've seen.

the ide hdd is just a spare for saving .
i have a spare 2 sata connections on the m/board.
will have a go

Yeah. I looked up that motherboard. It has 2 SATA and 1 IDE connector, weird.
If you mess around in the BIOS it's always good to write down what you did so you can put it back the way it was.
I bought an IDE to SATA converter to transfer data from an IDE hard drive to my main SATA drive. It works for optical drives too.

My board has 4 connectors ? ?
Using the same o/s.
Its just when i tried before the system just kept restating as if i had a problem.
If i cannot achieve this i will move music to ide drive so its accessible for my apple / zune / library.

Have looked as to why Windows reboots when i have 2 hdd fitted but cannot find out why ?
I have a hdd caddy which is great but music libraries like the music available all the time.
May just move it to the ide and save money for a new system ;)

Is there an OS on both drives? Does BIOS load the drive you want?

I have Windows 7 on the sata drive. all ok
I use the IDE drive for saving items only no o/s.
no problem with drivers as is.
When i attach another sata hdd then the trouble begins. may just be motherboard ?
the link is what i have for an extra saving hdd.

Have you tried disconnecting the IDE drive and connecting the second SATA Drive?

Is RAID enabled in the BIOS? With one SATA drive, it probably defaults to disabled but maybe when you add the 2nd it switches to enabled. I'd connect the 2nd SATA and go directly to the BIOS and see if RAID is showing as enabled or not.

Do the drives have to be identical when using a RAID set up?

Not so much anymore (not sure about RAID 0 which technically isn't RAID, just striping). It just uses the capacity of the smallest drive. Say you have a 1TB and a 1.5TB drive, you can only make a 1TB mirror and the .5TB is unusable. I had to use a 2TB drive to replace a 720GB drive for a week while waiting for a replacement drive.

Thanks for clearing that up dweez. I originally bought drives in pairs for my main comp but then didn't get around to setting up RAID on account of being a lazy SOB.

well i connected a second sata device and checked if raid was enabled, it wasnt.
I got to the windows start screen and the pc keeps turning off .I cannot get any further that this.
Tried all sata connections and the same.
bios picks up that a hdd is connected but thats all.
sod it , will just use a caddy.

have done a bit of searching but, tinternet is a bit of a nightmare sometimes.
look again when i have more time ;)
I keep going to the idea of installing linux the more i use windows. :D
may do a list of what i need and see what the alternatives are.

Have you tried starting Windows in safe mode or doing a clean boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135)?
I would run sfc /scannow. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
Type cmd in the Start search box. Right click cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. At the prompt type sfc /scannow and press enter.
Note: There's a space between sfc and /scannow.

been reading link.
new hdd has been formated and has nothing on it.
primary hdd is sata.
second hdd is ide used for storage.
third hdd is sata (this keeps crashing the system until i unplug it)
but when i initially reformatted hdd to run windows 7 , the pc did crash when i connected the dvd drive also sata. i had to move the sata cable to another socket. me thinks the sockets are buggard ?
