I found this randomly searching for a pic with a number in it for Smokes' count to a million with pics thread and I am completely fascinated by it. Largely because I can't think of why someone would put it on the 'Net. I've been trying to make a signature image out of it, but nothing's been to my liking. But here's the full deal:

JackFrost, that is one disturbing image.

This is link to a series of pictures made of Lewis Powell (http://i43.tinypic.com/6q8zdi.jpg), aka Lewis Paine. He was one of the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination and these shots were made a few hours before he was hanged. He looks so calm and detached despite knowing he's going to die very soon.

Jack, One word.......AWESOME. Couple of things I noticed:
1. It looks like blood the lady is throwing up
2. And that's a US flag on the wall but I cant imagine this is taking place in the Americas.
3. What kind of beer is the guy drinking? Maybe that's a clue

1. I'm not sure that's blood, it may just look dark because the camera used a flash and the shadow of the beer she's spitting back up is easier to see. My question: Does she do that often enough that they knew to put the trashcan there? Or if she'd done it earlier in the evening why are they still letting her drink?
2. You can't? Those people look like the whitest of American white trash to me.  :D Just getting shitty in some cheap hotel room.
3. I can't really tell, but I'll bet it's pretty cheap swill. I'm not enough of a beer enthusiast to figure it out. I also like the way he's holding the can without his pinkie. He's very high-class...  :D

What colour of laces red or yellow. Mine were yellow ;D

Mine came up to just under the knee due to another part being stitched onto the top.  My laces were Black as it was a reel of lace type cord that you had to burn the ends of to thread.  It was the only way to get laces long enough.

A friend sent me the new winners from National Geographic for this year. There are 30 pics and I dont want to use up to much space so I did my best to consolidated without messing up to much of the images. Enjoy!! My favorite is the "Zebras with their shadows" I think. They are all awesome!!

You know all they did was put some peanut butter on the back of the teddy bear's head and it's just gnawing on it right now.

Also just had a mental image.  Just imagine the size of the rat if that was a full-sized teddy bear.  Someone needs to shopw that pic and make the rat super big.

It's Saturn's 6th-largest moon, Enceladus.

Here's Saturn's largest moon Titan, which also happens to be the 2nd largest moon in the solar system behind Jupiter's Ganymede. Titan apparently produces methane, so it's essentially a big space fart...  :D

That's 'cos we're moving too - the whole equations of motion of three bodies moving in different orbits relative to one another, at different speeds, makes for quite complicated patterns in the sky.

Oh, of course, I'm so used to see stationary models...  :D

Here's a pic of the Nevada nuclear testing grounds where over 600 underground detonations took place over an area the size of Rhode Island:

id love to know what kind of super secret government stuff is going on there...

this may seem like a dumb question, but; when they detonate the nuke underground, does that mean the bomb is buried, then set off?

It's a way to minimize the spread of the fallout...

However that just means the radiation is buried, so there's not much going on out there probably...

Post by: jacktheripper305 on February 25, 2009, 12:21:10 AM
yea, i figured it was some way of keeping the damage to a minimum

But i like to think that there are huge top secret military complexes hundreds of feet underground, where they carry out tests and research that no one will ever know about.

Places like Umbrella Corporation.  :D

You must mean Black Mesa and Aperture Science.

Well, then there's gotta be some kind of Vault-Tec installation out there, too...  :D

By the way, for some perspective, this vid shows what it looks like when those underground nukes detonate:

Do you think the sound track was playing like that during the explosions? .....maybe added later

I'm pretty sure that's a sequence from a documentary on nuclear testing and the music was added for that. But people are pretty creative, so it could;ve been cobbled together. I doubt it was playing during the actual tests.

Those pics are pretty cool Jhb...

That reminds of a documentary i watched in my high school history class called "The Atomic Cafe"

It was about the nuclear bomb, and its history, but it was done entirely using stock footage from the era. It had old training videos that the military used to show soldiers about the bomb, and what they should do in an attack. It was very interesting, and fun to watch.

It can actually be found over on D, such search "The Atomic Cafe"

Post by: JackFrost on February 26, 2009, 12:53:30 AM
I actually own a real copy of The Atomic Cafe, and yeah it's a great little flick.

There's another one out there that's really cool about the film crews who actually filmed the blasts that has some awesome footage in it.  One cool thing in it is a test where they had three people stand at certain spot in the desert and detonate a nuke 10,000 feet above them to see what effects it had. The 3 are wearing shades and not looking up, and you can see them flinch as the flash occurs. And cool another segment has a camera that the explosion uprooted from it's moorings so the mushroom cloud spins in and out of view as it flips through the air...

I used to have it around but I've even forgotten the name. Gonna have to see if I can find that - I'll let you know if I find it again...

i just finished DLing it, so im gonna watch it in a little while, since its been over 4 years since i saw it.

But that other one sounds pretty cool, i love documentaries about the nuclear bomb. especially ones that have a lot of of stock footage in it.

I would imagine that the sheep was 'shopped in as it wouldn't last 5 seconds on that rock, but I found this on for the actual place in question.

wedged between the walls of a mountain crevice in norway is a rock called kjeragbolten. the rock is often stood on by tourists for a crafty photograph whilst attempting not to look down at the 3000ft+ drop. i?m assuming the sheep/goat in the picture below was a local.

on further inspection, that sheep could well be real as you can just about see that there is a lower level either side of the rock, making it a useable bridge.

A few times not that I can remember much of it.  Did you have a cameo?

There was a great bit of graffiti correction by John Cleese.

Yes I do remember that now, and that "If it's not done by morning, I'll cut your balls off" became a bit of a cliche in I seem to recall.

Does that clip remind you of your school days?  metaphorically speaking.

Me and a buddy yesterday...

Last night was what is call "Jonsok"... or "Sankt Hans aften"...

It's actually a old pagan tradition, in celebration of midsummer nights eve...

It was marked on what, in Scandinavia, was called a "Primstav"...

The modern, religious connection (caused by the force-christening of Norway) is in celebration of John the baptist...

The Christian connection is not very visible, however, the pagan tradition of lighting a bonfire is still living on...

Anyways, this is the view from where we was sitting:

And the other way:

On our way back to the car, we saw some other people out for a bit of summer grilling...

And now, from some other post, made by some other guy, in some other thread:

(literal translation: Express-route), which has a long and
significant history as a means of transportation between
small towns such as the one I live in...

a couple of miles away from my place, right next to the
Russian-Norwegian border...

^ *snorts*

This probably isn't the best picture from last night as far as composition, or focus. But, it's one of my favorites for some reason... I guess because it caught a feel/mood. It was actually a quick over the shoulder one-off after we'd gathered stuff and were hurrying back to our car before the crowds got rushed, and traffic got bad. It was one of those 'parting shots' where you take in the whole scene, and try to store memories because you're not ready for a night to end.

Nice pics AJ, that looks like a very nice place. And that looks like an especially satisfying doob!  8) Puff, puff, give!

And Skadi that pic of the fireworks is fantastic - excellent the way the flares reflect off that car. Too bad about that streetlight in the upper right >:(, but I have to admit that that little lens flare circle it made like in the movies is pretty cool.  ;) :)

And for a second I thought smokes took that pic himself and I was going to ask why he bothered to come back.

I feel kinda lame offering up another moon pic :-\, but this one I have not altered in any way (I'm not sure why, but I really like the little spot of bright white on the skylight near the bottom-middle):

They're koala bears who managed to escape the continuing burning fires that devastated their country.

Australia has had a record heat wave with devastating fires as a result.

Koalas, if you don't know, are not social and don't come out of trees or down to the suburbs very often.
But the main thing is that they don't actually drink water normally at any time.
All their food and water source is provided from the eucalyptus leaves that they eat.
That's why they sleep about 22 hours of the day because the calories and liquid intake is not enough to keep them awake long enough,
but they consume enormous amounts of leaves in that time.
So.. the following photos are even more amazing once that fact is known.

KOALAS DURING THE HEAT WAVE IN AUSTRALIA

Begging water from passing people because there is no water! These are wild koalas, not those wildlife park semi-tamed animals.

Me and a buddy went fishing last night...

This is the first water we went to...

This is the second. I went and stood on the micro-island...

Third water we tried, only found Baby Fish in there... let them back out...

My buddy:

Uhm... Aaah... I'm using a fishing rod...

Other than that, I'm completely blank...
This was my first fishing trip. I borrow a rod from a pal, who was working.

From what little Google could tell me, I THINK I'm using a fixed spool beachcaster, but I'm not sure...

If it helps any, discharge as dweez implies would mean that it would have to be the military that gave him a hand/tit/blow/foot/ass/vagina/armpit/legpit jobbie.
That wouldn't make sense because I don't think the US military engages in much more than bless'ed people in the ass.

Not sure about anymore but it used to be a "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy.  You could be gay, but as long as your superiors didn't know, it was fine.  If they ever found out, you got kicked out.

Actually, it's still the same way. And yes, you will be discharged. It was on NPR a few months back.

What I find funny in a biased way is how people tend to think that because someone's gay automatically means that they're attracted to you. They still have to find attraction just like any hetero couple. So in that sense, discharging someone simply because they're gay is pretty biased IMO.

^^  ? I think the problem I had the first time I posted a tweety image is I pulled one that someone was using while they were trying to advertise something to sell. So, they pulled it when they didn't need it any longer. I just shouldn't have been lazy. Otherwise I would have just gotten my own image, and linked it to myself like I ended up doing.

Keep camera still take 4 shots then overlay using load files into stack then auto align layers. Erase what you don't need from each layer and add picture in hand  8) well thats what i do ;)

good picture  8)

edit: Sorry i'm in zombie mode (need sleep)  I see more than 4 shots now anyone guess how many  ;D

good idea but all the people are the same

I know. they used two cameras, both of which you can see in the photo.

then they just paste the on photo into the green-screen on the other, repeat process until MAGIC....
Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: smokester on February 14, 2010, 05:32:00 PM
Whoever told you it wasn't photoshopped is a liar.

All you need to do is set the shot up and take a photo - print it on a portable printer = set the shot up again with the guy holding the recently printed photo - then repeat and voila.  No PS and a perfect shot
Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: dweez on February 14, 2010, 10:44:10 PM
Sure there are ways to do it without PS, but I'd bet money on it that this particular one is photoshopped.  If I'm not mistaken, isn't that the same guy for all the "characters"?  Also, one of the "guys" has a Trogdor shirt on. :D
Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: smokester on February 15, 2010, 05:46:11 AM
Sure there are ways to do it without PS, but I'd bet money on it that this particular one is photoshopped.

I think what I suggested it right because:

1. The photos are the right type for a portable printer.
and
2. If you look at the gap below his hand it represents at least 20% of the overall height of the image, and in the photo the guy is holding (in the photo of the photo) it looks lore like 15% so the shot is not set up identically.  If it were shopped that wouldn't be the case.

Look again.  I see the same game a total of 8 times.  It's not just 2 shots, one from each side.

The key word would be "repeat" and I can only make out three "takes" clearly enough to make them worthwhile.

They're as good as any I've seen Goldie, and a far cry from the shite I take.  I have used HDR stuff but not in that way.  In CGI you can use HDR images to mimic real light by wrapping them around a scene and using them as a sort of light source.  I did have some interesting tutes on how to create balanced ones in the first place, I'll have a look and see if I can find them.

2 tornadoes hit New York city this week. They were only the ninth and tenth tornadoes for that area's history since the 1950's. So, it's rare enough for one, but they had two. It's weird to see a tornado by the Statue of Liberty. It looks like a screen shot form an apocalyptic movie trailer.

These aren't my photos :P The professional photographers at the event were really good, and their cameras have better set up for darkness and motion. But.. they were just really good in the sense that they were personable and worked with the crowds really well. Some year I might go and consider just setting up tp take pictures, and not participate.

The blood in the 7th pic looks particularly natural!!  Generally the blood in films looks too pinkish when in real life blood becomes more brownish in contact with the air.
The ilumination from the bottom it's very original.
Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: Skadi on October 08, 2010, 11:09:37 AM
I only saw a handful of people that looked dumb. Most people do a better then average to excellent job of makeup application. It helps that both the big zombie walks around us are this time of year.. all of the hallowwen stores are open. So everyoine has access to good but affordable facepaint and  blood.

And, most people have extremely good background stories that play out in what they choose to wear. There's lots of good imagination. There was one guy who was carrying his briefcase that was hanging open, but his zombie brain refused to drop it ;D .. and the girl he was was paired up with was in cool business attire also. There were also a couple of girls dressed in hanging out clothes.. like.. clothes that you wouldn't want to be stuck in for life if you never got to change your clothes again.. the funniest in that group was a girl whose shorts said 'Girls Don't Poop' across the butt of her shorts. Another guy was in a UPS uniform. Everyone was very clever.

The photographers were in heaven running around getting shots :D The prewalk gathering takes place in a park at dusk, so there was still some moody natural lighting. And the whole downtown area is well lit.. and you have the great shock and juxtaposition between the zombies and the non zombies. The only group I was disappointed in were zombie hunters. None of them stood out as excellent.

Plus, everyone beahves fairly well, the crowds watching were good sports, and it raises money for local charities, which were all nice bonuses.

Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: Skadi on October 08, 2010, 03:53:12 PM
did you also get into a costume?

Yes, it?s super fun to dress up. Plus it was even more fun to jump at bystanders and see who you could scare, and drag your palms along store windows to scare the people inside..or peer in at people while their sitting and eating :D We gave our donation to the local homeless shelter, so it?s nice to find a creative way to call attention issues.  Sometime I?d like to go just to take pictures of it instead of participate. It?s too hard to do both. Next year though at least one other person and myself are considering going as zombie hunters since there weren?t any good organized groups or teams of them that stood out.

I believe they use "Focus Stacking" rather than macro photography.  Stacking is not so restrictive and gives you crisper images.  From what I have read at least.
Title: Re: Interesting images.
Post by: goldshirt*9 on October 16, 2012, 01:29:04 PM
macro- just a general term
"Macro photography, also known as macrophotography, refers to taking pictures of small things at close range, traditionally macro photography is defined as any photo in which the subject has a 1:1 ratio with the photo negative"
blar blar blar

Photo stacking
"Focus stacking is a powerful technique for extending a photo's apparent depth of field, It's perhaps most useful in close-up and macro photography, since the camera lens's highest f-stop is often insufficient to render everything in focus"
blar blar blar.

Quite a interesting and difficult set up to achieve.
Only have i seen better pictures on Big D from a botanist ?? ? who posted macro shots from where he worked in Hawaii shockingly good.  :) :)

no depth of field which afflicts most macro shots.

not macro but similar effect is used in HDR photo's, just alter the f-stop either side of the set level.

Macro is very close range whereas Focus Stacking does not have to be.  I believe it works on the old principle used for sharpen images whereby you stack your images but only use certain data elements from each stack/layer.

I see what you mean though, you just meant the shot was close.

You're missing the point: it's the not knowing that makes the experiment.

Think of it in terms of football: Not long ago the only televised football we had was match of the day. If you couldn't get to the game on Saturday, you dodged your mates and the TV until 10:00 and then you could watch your team play not knowing if they had won or lost. Until you know, the result can be anything.

In the cat thing, if the cat is left in a box there is no doubt that:

1) the cat was alive when it went in
2) sometime in the future the cat will be dead.

But you can't tell which one applies at any time without looking. So in the intervening period between looks is it either or both?

If you had to bet your life on it, which would you

I nearly took your post seriously then.

The smirk on Gary Lineker's face is like the glass box: it always gives the result away in advance.

First time I ever saw one was in an issue of "Games" magazine.  Each issue had a "fake ad".  I swore the "Stare-E-O" image was the fake ad.  When it wasn't, I spent about 2 weeks staring cross-eyed at this thing until finally, BLAM!  All of a sudden, this simple 3D sphere pops into my vision.  I freaked out how awesome it was.  I showed a friend, who repeated two week process.

I started building this to learn the new tools in Autodesk Maya (I'm only about halfway through the modelling). And because I got a 3D printer for Christmas and thought I'd design some gadgets as gifts:

Now I read that back it may looks like I was going to print that robot - which of course would be ridiculous. I was just learning about the new tools as I haven't touched Maya in about 10 years and I wanted to make some funky keyrings.

Still untextured but most of the modelling done. This just has a basic texture and the background image is actually supplying the lighting:

Key rings?  I thought that robot looked equipped to clean my house.  If it is, send it over.  Pretty cool graphics, though.

Thanks Goldie.

If it did clean houses it'd be tied up with mine for the next 18 months.

I know it's a far cry from key rings, but there are so many new tools in the software that I once brushed with that I thought I'd go right in at the deep and and work backwards.

Background is a bit blurry - sack the photographer.

It's just a HDR image you use to create lighting. It's usually not rendered .

They are available here if you wish to complain ...

Just about finished all the modelling. Probably won't ever properly texture it as it's very complex and would take far too long for what it's worth, but I'll tidy it up and take some renders on the weekend:

I was watching the news earlier and a report coming out of China, when I noticed - what I thought to be - a remarkable coincidence of a photo that happened to catch an image of a ship that appeared to be sitting on top of 3 buildings:

It was only when I zoomed into the image that I realised it was too perfectly sat to be a coincidence, and I looked it up. Turns out it's this place:

I was both disappointed and amazed at the same time.

Singapore isn't in China, though.

Nope.  I hear Raffles Hotel is pretty fun, although it's more for its imperialist nostalgia that it appeals.  This Moishe Safdie building is of an entirely different order.  He died recently.  I think he first gained fame as the designer of the cubical habitations at Expo '67 in Montreal.  Kind of daring in its own way.  https://www.safdiearchitects.com/projects/habitat-67 (https://www.safdiearchitects.com/projects/habitat-67)

The BBC is at its best with scandals. It loses the plot when sandals are involved.

I've never had one.  I'd be happy to drink a cocktail at their bar, though.

I had to look up the ingredients.  Sounds fruity.  Reminded me of this a bit....
