Can I pick my three best guesses based on profits, directorial skill, or reviews I read?

I'd say:
Captain Phillips because folks adore Tom Hanks.
Gravity for the FX
Nebraska based on what I've heard people say. I have not seen it yet.

If I have to pick one, though, I'd go with Gravity.

Ive seen them all and I suck at picking. These things have alot of politics in them. In order, by my opinion on quality
1. Philomena
2. Dallas Buyers Club
3. American Hustle
4. 12 Years a Slave
5. Gravity
6. The Wolf of Wall Street
7. Nebraska
8. Captain Phillips

All depends who gave out the best "gifts" to the voters / committee
Should be 12 Years a Slave, but british telling usa about their history is a no no.
Could be Dallas buying club, but are people a little fed up a political correctness
American Hustle, As it has America in the title and lots of people rate it ( bored me to death)
Captain Phillips, Was ok but not a winner, although agree with  tarascon we all love Hankie baby  ;D
Gravity is technically and visually Awesome. Story is a joke though.
no idea on the others ?

Yeah, the plot is thin but it's just a devise to pin some truly brilliant cinematography on. I picked Gravity solely based on FX and the director's skill. He's the first director since Orson Welles to use very long, uninterrupted shots (totally unedited). There are some great films up for the award but I think Alfonso Cuaron has re-revolutionized cinema with this film.
I found that impressive.
