Title: Square Pizza is an Abomination.
Post by: 8ullfrog on May 20, 2017, 03:06:12 AM
Bad week, very bad week. Month even.

But square pizza is an abomination. My aunt loves it, loves "sicilian" pizza.

Me? I'm a simpler man. golly wood fire, golly squares, and take that chicken and shove it up your ass, it does not belong.

In the ads, both local and national, there seems to be a push towards square pizza, and I for one, stand against it.

I haven't had proper deep dish in over 17 years, idiots think it means sicilian. It does not. Deep dish for me was a religious experience where I am not. It's like a cassarole without the cowpoo noodle layers, and the flavor can not be denied.

Essentially, I'm hungry, and bless'ed broke.

I keep telling my wife not to buy slab pizzas, all of the outer pieces are 1/3 crust and just by chance, everyone takes the middle pieces and leaves the outer. I also don't like that the squares are "bready" rather than that nice deep dish crust. Hard to get a good pizza anymore, the Italian's have all but left the business and the large chains dominate, but there are still a few around that make a good deep dish but it does cost me.

I've been to Sicilian bakeries that had a "pizza" that was sort of a hybrid between focaccia and regular pizza:  very bready with a garlic/tomato topping.  It's delicious.  But it's a far cry from regular circular pizzas.

It's hard to beat a cheese slice and a glass of cold seltzer for a quick lunch.

Where've you been bruv? Pizza Hut use to advertise the Sicilian on the TV all the time. I used to buy them at least twice a week and fought over the crust, truth be told.

What can be worse then a square pizza? what about Deep-fried pizza is available in many chip shops in Scotland The basis is an inexpensive fresh or frozen oven-ready pizza consisting of a thick parbaked base with toppings already applied. This is then fried until crisp. The dish can be served as a "pizza supper" (with chips) or single (without chips), in whole and half pizza portions. The dish may be served with salt and vinegar, or with "salt and sauce" (a mixture of brown sauce and vinegar) in Edinburgh and the surrounding area per local chip shop custom. Often the chips will be poured onto one side of the pizza, and the pizza then closed around them.

This pizza is deep fried without batter, although another variation known as a "Pizza Crunch" consists of a large, battered pizza/half-pizza deep-fried, usually served with a hearty amount of chips and vinegar (which is then called a "Pizza Supper").

Heart attack material

Maybe heart attack material but definitely an improvement over plain old square pizza. Moderation, moderation  :D

They have deep fried cheese in the midwestern U.S.  I find it an abomination.  They deep fry mushrooms.  That's also a crime against vegetables.

Square or rectangular pizza is what I had at a Sicilian bakery in Chicago.  It was almost more like focaccia.  The shape is not important, but submerging it in hot fat prior to consumption is where I draw the line.

I laughed, just because that was funny.  ;D

I think there is a huge population that will eat almost anything battered and deep fried, in fact, the first time I ever tried zucchini and actual liked it was in one of those "sampler appetizers"where you receive a few of everything. I've since grown to like zucchini and dislike the majority of fried foods, the difference in taste is remarkable, deep frying seems to kill the flavor of most foods and I have no doubt the nutrients as well.

Deep fried Camembert with a sweet sauce is incredible. Not altogether unsophisticated either. Quite delicate, in fact.

I had some kind of Brie (soft French type rind cheese) at the Opera in East Berlin on Unter den Linden once that was prepared that way.  It was very palatable and served with a raspberry sauce.  I think I gained 5 pounds just from that one plate of food.

I had something similar but instead of Camembert it was Brie, though I am not allowed it I got to have a taste and it was fantastic, I think the sweet sauce in this case was a sweet onion and chillie chutney and it was just the perfect ballance of savoury, sweet and a little picante (Italian for spicy ;D)

At some point with Smokesters permission I would like to resurrect the cookery book with some delicious recipes including a very passable low salt and sugar brown sauce, the same with tomato ketchup among other recipes...

Apologies to 8ully for sidetracking this thread a little, though it was never my intention to derail it, as a peace offering to him I will see if I can convince Bubu to put in a recipe for authentic Italian Pizza ;)

No permission needed old chum. This place is as much yours as mine - as it is for all of us.

Mmmm food.  : )  good thred 8ully.  It's a.read that keeps making me hungry, although I hated square pizza growing up and cut the pizza in triangles at the bar I worked at when no one was looking.
