Title: Don't buy Ubisoft DLC (Or Games)
Post by: 8ullfrog on July 03, 2022, 03:59:06 AM
I used to refer to Ubisoft as UbiSuck because of their draconian love of DRM, back when games came on those circle things.

I don't buy many Ubi games, I consider them overpriced at standard, and hilariously overpriced when it comes to DLC. They think $110 is a perfectly reasonable price for a PC game.

But they've proven themselves to be cheap bastards. They're shutting down multiplayer services for a wide swath of their titles, which is not unheard of. They are ALSO tearing out the DLC, root and stem.

So if you paid for it? Too bad, going away.

I bought a far cry pack a while back, and one of the affected titles is Far Cry 3. I know that's not a hot new title, it's nearing a decade since release, but I've not spent a lot of time playing it. I've got the base games up to 4, I have not purchased any of the DLC, and now I'm glad for it.

I'd been thinking of buying Ghost Recon: Wildlands, but if I do, I'll steer clear of it's DLC. Sunset policies are a nasty little fly in the ointment, and we now know that Ubisoft doesn't flinch to pull that trigger.

EA is also cutting off "extras" soon, so if you've got anything over there, go grab it.

It's almost enough to make a man don a black tri-corner hat.

UPDATE: It gets worse. Ubisoft have now pulled one of the Assassin's Creed games off of Steam - Even if you've paid for it in the past.

The way previous steam de-listings worked is a direct refutation of this practice.

Specifically, store pages were "unlisted" and titles were no longer available to purchase, BUT you could download the game as many times as you like, as the files were hosted by valve on their hosting service.

The new Ubisoft decision is "No, we've decided to take it away from you forever."

I have heard the reason why so many classic titles never see deep discounts is because they're "Dead software" to the publishers. They don't want you playing, say, Far Cry 3. They want you playing Far Cry 6, or whatever they squeeze out next.
