Great news, Americans! Despite all the naysayers with their "evidence" otherwise -- pointing out that South Korea has more broadband connections than we do, or that in some countries speeds are better than they are here -- the United States has come out at the head of the class. And that's before the government rolls out the " broadband stimulus " bonanza. According to Leonard Waverman (the dean of the prestigious Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary), Americans are not only the most productive users of connectivity, but our government's use of IT is as good as it is anywhere.

We may now use more broadband than other places, but whether it is the fastest is debatable. And pricing is definitely higher than some others.

true dat. We may be better than Korea(yay....) but we are nowhere near being the best in terms of tramsitting signals used, bandwidth, or pricing. Now Japan on the other hand, amazing.

no way. As of today,Japan's been using fiber optic for several years running now.
Whereas we just barely adopted it, and only busy cities have it,in select locations.

My isp is considering adopting some of Comcasts policies, like capping. But as of yet there have not been any proposals drafted. And there are a number of sites that keep abreast of the internal workings as they can.

Well this answer was a while in coming

..I don't know, so far as the sites go. But since we started talking about this, I've upgraded to 20/2. For some reason my appointment starts with one installer but usually ends up with a handful of installers hanging out talking and joking. And they are very free with what they know about the internal workings. This last time I learned a lot about the owner of the company and, unfortunately, it looks very possible Comcast may be buying the company.

I'm not sure about that, haven't you lot got the capacity for up and over 50Mbit on cable? I am signed up at 8Mbit but as my house doesn't have cable (and they won't fit it) my phone line will only carry about 5.7Mbit so that's all I can get no matter what the ISPs are offering. I could be wrong but I believe it is only Virgin who offer 20Mbit and 50Mbit connections over here.

Comcast offers a max of 20Mb/down 15Mb/up I think.

That's of the fastest I would think for cable right now. I could be wrong.

When my pals from Japan came over to visit me about 3 years ago, they laughed at our broadband and at all the packages that were being offered at the time. They considered even the fastest available connection as pretty stone age in comparison to Japan.

haha yeah. They really do have all of the right to laugh too. Japan's bandwidth offers and ISP'sblow the world off the charts.

You can get 50mb here IF you were rated for it ( being a bank or a similar financial business) want to pay the amazingly high fees, and have access to a t3 trunk close by.
The average here in this part of the US is a tier three which is about 6 mb.
Its more ( not much) on the east and west coasts though.
BUT,,,just because they say you are getting 6 mb doesnt mean thats what it is,, it all depends on an impeidence cap for your area.
America taxes the living hell out of any comunications systems , and the actualy speed it is can be influenced by this taxation.
So just because Windstream tells you your getting 6 mb doesnt mean you get that fast, just means theyr rated for that,, youll actualy get like 3 or 4 mb.

I have a freind thats a service tech that told me how this all works. its almost a scam.

Not to mention the lines that are being used.
Most lines ( phone lines that is for DSL) are so old that they cant handle any high speed transfers.

True. But it's also why most ISP's are implementing fiber optic to feed their bandwidth to the select locations. So the fact that it gets fed in via optic, and then dispersed as DSL/cable means that there's less loss of actual bandwidth if you're talking about cable quality, also less lag, and gateway/server latency. If any of that matters for the individual. Generally, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the average American uses internet to check emails if at all. And I seriously doubt that they'll know what a 20Mb down/16Mb up speed means.

The local here in Poteau oklahoma ( the hub that handles everything in Southeast Oklahoma) Is stupid.
They cant handle the trafic that goes through them, and they wont upgrade because they dont think that the trafic will last and the exact words from Tony ( the owner ) is that " The internet activity we get here is just a fad and the novelty will were off".
In other words, Tony is too busy getting rich and refuses to upgrade anything.
We tend to get booted off the net if traffic is too much . Businesses get priority and private use is secondary.
Doesnt stop them from peaking into tyour emails accounts or charging you an arm and a leg.
There are even places they refuse to serve with other than dialup because their " Is no market for the internet " in thoe areas.
Like I said, no keeping with the times and saving money so he can go to Greece for three weeks a whack twice a year.
We live in the stone age due to this idiot and his political manuvering.
