The Big move and its preparation. PLEASE READ!!
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:50:24 AM »
Hello all.

This is to let you know that later this week or over the weekend I will be moving this site to a new host.  Because it will take up to 3 days for Diasfora to fully propagate onto the new server I will be hosting us in another domain temporarily so there will be a minimum break in service.  Also, we will be upgrading to V2 of SMF that has some nice little additions that you'll discover as you go along - my favourite being the expandable reply boxes as I am always getting caught out having to scroll both the reply window and the reply page (you'll see what I mean when you are there).

This whole thing has proved to be quite a challenge as we have lots of little errors in out Database that made it fail to import without finding and editing out all the quirks by hand, not only that but it is over 70mb which is a little heavy considering our size.  To make things easier I will be pruning the boards before export so don't be alarmed if the maintenance is fairly brutal and we may have to lose some modifications like the "bookmarks" as all mods should really be uninstalled before upgrading the Database to be compatible with V2.

The one thing I did notice (AND THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT FOR THE MEMBERS), is that the personal messages tables are nearly 8mb which is over 10% of our overall DB size.  I would ask you all then to prune your inbox and outboxes to help me to get us moved swiftly.  You should see a "prune messages" option at the bottom of the PM functions, and you can delete your PMs on mass if you are sure you have nothing that needs archiving, and if you do, you can always quote it and send it to yourself so it is recent, and then use that tool to delete all messages over 2 weeks old or whatever.

The interim site in the temporary domain I probably won't fuss over too much so please ignore anything that hasn't been updated like some of our custom images etc, as I will have to focus on getting the Diasfora installation perfect for us when we move back to it 4 or 5 days after the initial move.

Thank you all for your cooperation.

Whoops!  I'm sure no one is that concerned but I didn't flip that switch that maintained postcount while pruning threads.  I have only pruned 2 so far and if anyone's Postcount has suffered and they want them back - PM and I'll rectify it.

I've noticed I have the bad habit of just leaving messages to milder :P

I've got a few interesting messages that I like to keep around, but I'm brand new here.

However, as a guest, I will gladly abide by the rules of your house.

It's not a really a rule as such, just a request to make things a little easier for me.  I spent a couple of days exporting our database and importing it only for it to fail halfway through the process because of a silly little syntax error.  I have just exported it again and it is looking much healthier so thanks to everyone who has helped towards that.

Nice to see you here 8ullfrog.

It is kind of funny, I had just pruned my messages a couple of days ago..  NOT that there was a massive number (I typically delete them after the page becomes a bit unruley but there is that...

I now have 2 messages, one from smokes stating that I need to delete messages...  Which one shall I delete first?   ;D ;D ;D

I am not going to move this forum for a few days just in case the new setup isn't what it's cracked up to be, and/or there is a problem with the ungraded database.

When we are sure of those things I'll move diasfora and that will effectively kill the this forum for good.

Gotta admit.  I was playing with some of my sites on the new host last night and guess what.. the server went down.  The good thing is that they have a forum for clients whereby all hardware installations or other things that can put the server out, are discussed in real time so you have a better understanding of what's going on - and in last night's case they were installing a new HD I believe.

I do hope things go well :-\

I think it was the old HD that was causing the problems and why they installed a new one.  However, I'll send you the link to the forum and you should join too as it is separate to the main account.

Is the fora up and running?

The new forum was working fine today but it will have to be rebuilt with the latest Database when we move, so it is not for use just yet.

As for the server issue over there, I was actually looking at the wrong server fscking when I looked for my status - my outage is as yet undocumented to hopefully it was just a glitch.

Probably move us tomorrow and get Diasfora rehosted as quickly as possible.

Well we're here and there was only a few minutes break in service.

I haven't updated this to V2 as it seems pretty pointless at this juncture and I am not going to delete our old site for a day or 2 to make sure everything is irie.

please report anything that is broken other than site images and modifications.

Won't be long now before we migrate back.  The hold up has been some of the modifications that we use have been a bugger to get to work in V2, and I don't think we will be able to install the invite system at all.  I am not going mad with a new theme either - just something that is ours but keeps it light and clean.  I would have liked to do more but I have been busy with some real work of my own and have had really limited time.

Both this site and Diasfora are now hosted on the same server so whatever the service has been like here in my personal domain, you can expect the same when we migrate back. It seems better that our old host to me already, but I have had even less time to relax in the forum so my assessment might be off?

Although there is a forum installed in the old domain, there is only a provisional database that doesn't have any of your accounts imported yet.  The reason being, when you hand code stuff into SMF it will temporarily bork the site until the modification is complete and so I need to get that stuff done first before we migrate back. And, if I completely blow it up and can re-install the forum without losing whatever has been updated on the boards.  That is the reason why I have left us here so that you can all carry on regardless and when we move there should only be a break of service for about an hour.

If smokes is anything like me, the transfer might not take anywhere near an hour but you always pad the time in case of unforeseen complications.

I was only getting 14/15kbs upload speed when FTPing for some reason, and when our DB was 71mb it was taking forever to complete.  Now that its under 40mb and my connection seems better you're right in saying it should take a lot less, but I would like to incorporate the chat room back in before going live and that may take a few mins.
