Seems like a very good machine according to this review I found.  The hardware is powerful and video, audio and text readability are excellent apparently:

Italian Translation:

And it's incredibly cheap.

Kindle Fires are supposed to be nice.  It runs a customized Android OS so if you're familiar with Android OS, you should pick it up easily.

I've seen this advertised on MTV a few times now, and it does look like a slick tablet. I would imagine it will do very well here over Christmas at £159.  That's about 2 beers and a cheese sandwich in Leicester Square.

amazon is awesome, if you buy your books from amazon then, you then send it to through wifi connection. Otherwise you can hook your tablet up with your usb connection and then drop them in the books folder…. or you can download calibre and calibre can do all the work for you really and you just have to sync your books you add to the calibre library onto your kindle.

if that wasnt helpful  here is a youtube video link :)

thank you mishca! :)  I already have calibre, and I can use it to transfer the ebooks and convert in the right format, I used it when Demonoid was up to upload my book in different formats and the epub was the most requested. And the tutorial is really useful  :)

Hi.  Can I transfer FLAC files onto it?
Does it have the ability to interface with a digital projector so I can give powerpoint type presentations from it?

I don't use amazon much for books except in hard copy, so the e-books I own, I get from other sources, same with my music.  I'm concerned about being able to have a tablet computer that allows me to access my own content, use applications for e-mail, text, slide shows and visual presentations in concert with projection devices.  I am not at all sure a Fire will allow me to do this, as it seems like a device intended to foster subscriptions and use of amazon services.

That's my problem.  My well intentioned relatives bought me a kindle (even after asking me in the past if I wanted one and I had replied "no thank you").  So now I think I have to return it, get store credit from amazon and somehow use the money to buy a different tablet.  I was thinking of buying an iPad since I have more complicated needs than the Kindle seems to have been designed to satisfy and it seems a waste to have so many devices.  We simply can't afford both.

when I did do a search, I did find that apple does have HDMI connecter that allows you to connect to a monitor or projector. so maybe apple might be the way to go another andriod tablet…

found this

The kindle also has an hdmi connector to link to a television so you can stream movies from the kindle to the larger display.  That makes me wonder if I can use some kind of Droid app to synch via Google drive to my Mac and use the powerpoints and display them from the Kindle.  I just wish someone had the experience in advance to tell me if this will work.  Maybe there's some gearhead at amazon who can walk me through this.

Thanks.  I think I need to figure out a way to use Google drive to synch the files I have with the programs on the Kindle so I can either load images into a pdf or powerpoint and then check to see that the hdmi cable from the kindle can connect to a digital projector.  Assuming one can stream video content to a high definition tv monitor, then, it should in theory be possible to stream the image files to a projector.  I just have to work out the logistics of how this is possible.

well i have just purchased a fire hd for a ridiculous low price.  :o WoW what a piece of kit.
Transfer books via Calibre library easy and fast.
Transfer music and videos via media go ( yet again another thing i use this for) these show up on the app for your vid's.
Havent tried the hdmi port to tv yet, I have a mini hdmi connector ( somewhere lol) so i think this is quite easy.Either the tv picks up the signal straight away or i just change the vid settings, either case if you have a hdmi projector, then it should pick the signal straight away.
best of luck with the Projector and keep us posted.

I gave up and sent it back.  I've been reading that getting a used first generation iPad is a good idea if your primary need is to read text, listen to music, that sort of thing.  I've been checking Craigslist for them.  The problem is that people don't always get back to you.

I checked the Apple site and a new modest 4g iPad, with warranty, taxes and accessories will run close to $700.  That's completely out of my budget.  The used one advertised on Craigslist today is $150, much more in my price range.

I just picked up a used first generation iPad for $150 US.  Lightly used.  So far, it's working well, even if the processor is a little slow.  I like being able to read from it while listening to music.  I suspect the prices of tablets will come down and today I get announcements from Google that they are promoting lightweight laptops for $250/an alternative to MacBook.Air?  Any idea what that's about?

In my experience, "lightweight laptops" are usually low on memory and graphics, not much better than a netbook.  You don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a good laptop, but you have to put more than $400 into it, IMO (probably more than that).
