Happy Winter Solstice and the ancient pagan Roman midwinter festivals called 'Saturnalia' and 'Dies Natalis Solis Invicti' took place in December around this date.

I LOVE that Pogues song. It's a great song to watch other people hear for the first time.

Oh yeah, and Happy/Merry Christmas

I first heard the Fairytale of New York when I worked at the mall.  I worked in a clothing store and we had a column of TVs that aired music videos all day.  For the month of December, we only had one VHS tape of Christmas videos that we had to play over and over again.  This was the only one I never got tired of.

Merry Christmas everybody peeps!

I hope all of you have been good enough all year to warrant a Santa visit (that's me f**ked then), and that your indigestion is brief - which also goes for the hangover.

Happy Birthday Christ

Best guess Christ was born sometime in July.

( ... I don't know about the other bloke)

He wasn't born in December that's for sure. And oddly, that isn't even secret nor disputed.

i'm not sure that there even was a "December" a couple of thousand years ago, so it makes little difference.

The Queen has an official birthday which is not on the anniversary of her birth, so why shouldn't other folk?

All my friends who are "orthodox" something or other, rightly celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January on account of the missing 13 days.

I thought December was the tenth month of the Romulan calendar.

Actually, there is historical proof by secular historians proving the existence of a Jesus that lived at the time of the proposed biblical history.  As to whether he was what the Bible dictates, that's up to you and your faith.

Also, IIRC, Jesus was a very common name back in those times.

It is, but Josephus is a well-renowned historian from that time period.  I didn't want to divert the discussion (if you know what I mean), just wanted to point out that the existence of a person by the name of Jesus, who professed to be the Son of God, was well documented.  Also, whereas I don't particularly care for "Wikipedia as proof" either, that particular page is well-footnoted.

I don't think there's much doubt that Jesus (of Nazareth) existed, it's just that there is no reference in the bible or anywhere else that states when he was actually born.  I believe that it is celebrated on the 25th of December because of the existing Hanukkah festival, the midwinter Saturnalia and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti also around the same time, and possibly other bits and bobs to do with Mithras.

That sounds right to me.  I don't think anyone actually believes Jesus of Nazareth was actually born on December 25th (or the same correlating date back in biblical times).

... and the fourteenth month of the Klingon one?
   ;)

dweez, I've read selections of Josephus' History of the Jews.  It's a good source that gives some insights into the Roman Empire and related events that often differ from Biblical accounts.  There were multiple religious festivals celebrated throughout the Empire during the winter solstice (Mithraism was especially popular among the grunts in the Roman army).  There were mystery cults of Bacchus and Venus that paralleled aspects later adopted by Christianity and I suspect the Christian liturgical calendar appropriated several of their festivals.

I always go with the flow of the church placed the majority of their religious holidays on top of pagan
festivals.
so now all the pagans were celebrating the churches beliefs
