Old School

Post "classical" music favs here--anything from Medieval to 20th century avant garde. This is not limited to Western European "classical."

Anton Webern. Piano Variations, op 27.3

I completely missed this thread?

I used to listen to classical as a kid, and again when I studied the Piano (not very successfully) as it helped to understand structure.  I didn't really have favourites though as I tried to be as varied as possible with what I listened to.

That said, I cannot help feeling a great reverence for Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, but then, who wouldn't?

Another piece that I tended to be drawn to when putting something classical on, was  Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 17:

Here's something for you young people to get your learning in.

What a loss.  At least through the magic of youtube, I can see what I've missed.  I never had the chance to see him play live.

What can I say about the next one, really. It does things to my soul that I can put in words.

If you don't have time to watch/hear all of the next then skip to minute 2:50. I promise you won't regret.

I've enjoyed classical music for a while, just never really bothered to delve deep into it.  This little clip did have a big influence on my music though.

When the world seems like an ugly place, it's good to remember that we are also capable of great beauty:
