Dual Monitor settings.
« on: February 07, 2015, 10:30:22 PM »

I got a great 2nd monitor. Ive had 2 for many years but this new one is bigger and I love it. Heres the problem. Screen on 2 will just randomly move over to 1. Ive tried switching main and secondary settings but that doesnt make any difference. I gone into every monitor set up program I have installed but none of them refer to this problem.

Any ideas?

Which graph card you are using?

Are you currently using any desktop management software?

Off the bat it sounds like a registry issue whereby a key is re-writing itself to a former value.  If you can identify that, you should be able to set it permanently.

Cable/ connection issue: the computer is losing the second monitor and therefore reverting to only having one.

In the photo the screen isn't cloned. Would that not happen with a cable error?

When the OS loses the connection for the second monitor, it'll shift all the windows on it over to monitor 1.

Also, when software I have pulled up on monitor 2 moves over to 1 it still displays desktop. I would never rule anything out but connections look solid.

I ran driver genius and it did find a driver that needed to be updated. A Realtek Card Reader driver. Ive dld'd it and restarted so we'll see. Just weird that I didnt have the issue with the other monitor. Of course they are both Dell but are different models.

So the graph card is the Dell onboard graphics and you're using HDMI and VGA, or HDMI and DVI, or HDMI and Display port?  Maybe even a splitter?

No desktop management software then?

VGA from tower to monitor 2 and DVI from tower to monitor 1

Dual monitor set-ups have always given me a pain in the neck.  I had my Win8 "Start Menu" moved to monitor 2 accidentally once and it took me about a month to figure out how to move it back...which I then promptly forgot.

What I meant was does your card/onboard have HDMI and DVI.  If so I'd say using that pair would be better than utilising VGA.

As you probably already know, I use a triple monitor set up with a card that supports Eyefinity. It's very stable.

Remember when Dweez posted "Dual monitor set-ups have always given me a pain in the neck.  I had my Win8 "Start Menu" moved to monitor 2 accidentally once and it took me about a month to figure out how to move it back...which I then promptly forgot." I fixed it but I can guarentee you I will never remember how or why. Hopefully this thread will still be here. LOL!!

Have you tried running something like "DisplayFusion" to see if that helps?  It should take over management of your desktop and other than a hardware fault, I can see no reason why it would work correctly.

I think that there are versions available on another site you may be aware of - may be worth a try.

I've used DisplayFusion for years.  It was active when I swapped my screens.  There's an obscure 3-fingered keyboard shortcut that did it.  I accidentally hit it one day, having no idea what I did.

Were you trying to do that "blood" thing at the time?
