Late to the party dept.
« on: May 18, 2021, 09:20:27 PM »
We just started watching Allo Allo, which is pretty funny although dated.

What ancient shows are you watching?  And would you recommend them?

The 70s version of Monkey. That'll just never be too old to watch.

Oh, and Columbo of course. Half the Sky box is chocked with those films.

The dread name COLUMBO.

It's how they find you!

I watch what ever the wife has on the box.
Funny as she works in a Hospital and watches anything on the box that has to do with Hospitals.  :-\

Personally I love Endeavour, the new season has just finished as well.
No funny handshake brigade this season  ;)

I started watching that a while back on amazon prime and forgot about it. Compared to A Preponderance of Witches or whatever that's called, this is academy award territory.

I keep expecting Mark Valley to pop in and say, "Hi.  I'm Eddie.  How d'ya like me so far?"

Re: chris' comments about Fringe.  You forgot to mention bonus appearance by Meghan Markle in season 2.  She's no Olivier, but no worse than anyone else in the cast.

I'm a little tardy to "Vigil" on the BBC that everyone raved about so we started it last night. I must say that it was indeed very good.

Thanks for mentioning it as we'd never heard of it.  I suspect my husband will be happy with this so we'll check it out.

Not awfully realistic, however. But realism is totally unnecessary.

I saw a guy on BBC breakfast the day after the pilot aired who was an ex submarine officer and he confirmed that life down below wasn't much like the show and that living was far more cramped. He did also say that it was a very good show nonetheless.

Thanks for mentioning it as we'd never heard of it.  I suspect my husband will be happy with this so we'll check it out.

My money's on he'll thoroughly enjoy it.

Recently someone recommended the Mandalorian to me.  Can anyone here second that?

Complaint dept. (don't read unless you feel like listening to me fuss):
Right now I'm watching a lustreless Spanish police drama on amazonprime called Under Suspicion.  Pretty people and many characters still smoking, which is a bore.  It's a dull dull telenovela, really.  amazon prime is pretty disappointing.  It's hard to find stuff to watch that a) isn't awful and b) doesn't have ads.  They really ought to pull up their socks.  Sometimes they show series for a season and then any subsequent content is only available via subscription.  We had to go elsewhere to find the rest of Line of Duty, which was excellent.

I loved The Mandalorian but I'm a Star Wars fan and even enjoyed the new main movies (although they did kind of screw up the franchise). That said, I'll be the first to admit I like crappy movies/TV Series as "Battleship" is one of my favorite movies.

It's weird, it's structured more like a western serial than Star Wars, but considering the run of crap movies, it was the right decision.

I've only watched the first season, but that was enjoyable.

Thanks for the feedback.  I'll probably watch that after I get done with the dullards in the current telenovela.

We started watching Vigil last night.  So far it's pretty good.  We'd just finished Line of Duty, which we also enjoyed.  Odd to see Martin Compston in a prominent role right after watching the other show where he's a major character.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.  That's another 6 hours of entertainment I won't have to worry about.

I was looking at a series called "my life is murder" by "looking at the series," I mean my husband mentioned it so I looked it up online.  It stars Lucy Lawless, aka Xena Warrior Princess.  As I was reading Wiki entry, I see there's more Battlestar Galactica than I had known about.  Series from the early 2000s and a prequel. Lawless apparently acts in some of them.

Info here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(2004_TV_series)

So here's my question.  Is this worth watching?  (BG, I mean, not the murder series).  Thanks in advance.

Yes and also no.

The miniseries that launched the series? Absolutely worth it, but Lucy Lawless isn't in it.
She comes in around the end of season 2. Annnnnnd... eh.
She's fantastic, but what she is given to work with isn't great.
I don't want to give spoilers, but she essentially breaks down over time. A true follower of the faith to someone screwed over by prophesy.

If you do any web searches at all about her character, spoilers will pop like a soap bubble.

So, here's the thing.  I figured that BSG was an older series and that the 2000+ versions were some kind of revival that I'd missed.  It looks like, from the earlier link you sent, that I've already seen it?  Oh well.  Then I'm bummed not to have found yet another unseen sci fi series.  Thanks for bringing me up to date as I don't know that I would have been able to dig up the long discussion we'd had about BSG, which I enjoyed.

I'm reading a sci fi book recommended by a friend that isn't particularly good but I'm about ¾ of the way through so I'll finish it.  My husband doesn't really like science fiction so I'm kind of on my own looking for new stuff.  The current book, The Wild Shore, by Kim Stanley Robinson, is kind of slow and lame.

The 2004 series was a redo, the original was sued out of existence by George Lucas and was weirdly Mormon. It starred Lorne Greene.
Lucy Lawless would have been ten.

Thanks.  So I probably haven't seen it.  Given the state of my memory these days, it will probably seem fresh and new to me.
