Finished the second series of Wheel of Time, they definitely upped their effects and storyline.
Surprisingly enjoyed this series.

Were you ok with the gay stereotypes, airhead stereotypes, small town stereotypes etc. etc.?

Personally, I think the show is incredibly well crafted as the changes in family's attitude to life and one another are very subtle and gradual. It's only further down the line you witness how much of a "family" they've become.

That show came highly recommended to me by friends so I tried watching it a couple times but never made it past the first 15-20 minutes.  I think humor is a very personal thing and somehow, the show just didn't work for me.  My sister loves "Veep," and while I pretty much enjoy anything produced by Armando Ianucci -- can watch "The Thick of It" multiple times and find more nuances and amusement with each viewing -- the American series just fell flat for me.  I was simply bored and felt that Julia Louis-Dreyfuss failed at the kind of dry irony that made the British series such a success.

We are still slogging through "Cherif," the French detective series.  It helps that the two protagonists are so good looking.

What else?  PBS is playing "River" again, and we liked that a lot the first time around, so we started on that again.  It's kind of wonderful to see Sorcha Cusak (Mrs. McCarthy on Father Brown) as a tough Irish working class character.

Cherif is a French detective in Lyon who is obsessed with American cop shows, particularly 70's kitsch shows like Starsky and Hutch; Colombo; Mannix; Mission Impossible, etc.  He constantly uses strategies from these shows in solving cases, and knows them so well he can cite the season and episode.  Yesterday he got bonked on the head and Huggy Bear from Starsky and Hutch showed up.  Nobody else could see him, but HB kept giving Cherif advice so his coworkers thought he was nuts since he was constantly dealing with someone who they couldn't see.   This was pretty entertaining.  The actor who played Huggy Bear--Antonio Fargas-- is still alive and well at 77.

We have mixed feelings about "This is going to hurt."  A British mini series with Ben Whishaw, whom we knew from The Hour and  A Very British Scandal.  It does a good job of showing how overworked young doctors in the NHS are and underscores some glaring problems in underfunding such a service.  Women patients are basically dehumanized in the writing, so it's hard not to sympathize with the accusations of misogyny noted by some critics.  That doesn't mean that the hospital staff doesn't feel that way, but it's a marked element of the show, so it's kind of bothersome.

The cast is very strong and it's well-acted.

I was bored on the weekend so I watched the animated show "Hoops".

While I'm not a sailor, I did think I could hold my own in the cursing and swearing dept'. After watching this show, I think I have to re-evaluate that thought.

Odd thing is: I didn't hate it.
