Yeah, it's for gaming unless I can get it to lay brick (my profession). ;D
That would be handy.
You know I'm a chippy but I also do web design (semi professionally) and some audio stuff that needs comps with some grunt. I do game a little my it has never been a consideration when building a computer.
Incidently, all this week I am doing a bricklaying course here:
I'm doing so because of the shortage of bricklayers in the U.K and especially London. I figure being able to knock up a wall will save me a bundle in the long run.

One thing I had a hard time with was getting the guy on the mixer to use the same recipe (sand, mortar, water) every time and making the tenders understand that adding water on the mud boards (shaking it up) when it started to get too stiff to use was a no-no. Shaking up the mud will change the color of the mortar. I was working on a school and I told the guys this and the contractors' son said "don't tell me that you can't shake up mud." He was used to building warehouses. Anyway, they made mud before going to lunch and shook it up when they got back. There was a band of different colored brickwork one month later when it had cured. The school board inspector complained about it. He said it was from shaking up the mud. The son and I never got along after that. He thought I ratted him out. I didn't. Plenty of horseshit jobs in Florida, I got another one.

Masons were among the more noble professions and it's a shame that the skills have fallen into disuse as London, Boston, Baltimore, and half of northern European cities would not be nearly as grand without brick and masonry buildings.
I am too ignorant to appreciate your new computer, brick, but I suspect it will give you greater satisfaction than I currently enjoy struggling with regular appearances of the spinning rainbow wheel of death on my ancient iMac. This thread reminds me of comic Harry Enfield's take offs on Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

You actually only need this bit between the tags: WrhmWkRfyAI
Interesting story you posted.
Ironically and more on topic, it's probably the "information technology" era that was partly to blame for the drop off in tradesman. I know that's picked back up now as there is so much money in it, but bricklaying will always be one of the more unattractive of all trades. I mean: out in the wet and cold, hands that are torn and sore from the bricks and cement, back aches from all the graft necessary in the work. Electricians on the other hand, they always look better and cleaner after they've finished a days labour.
I have no trouble finding electricians.

The standoffs won't fit through the holes in the back plate on my Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler due to sloppy plating. Newegg won't cross-ship a new one.
This morning I was happy to have everything I needed for my new build. Now I'm pissed. >:(

I'm not real happy with Cooler Master right now. On the 18th of this month I got an email saying it would take 2 - 7 business days to ship the missing parts for my new CPU cooler. It's been 7 working days (9 actual days) and no email. Went to their site and saw this...
Inventory Maintenance
Attention: Our US Warehouse is currently experiencing shipping delays. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this delay and appreciate your patience as we try to complete each request in the order they were received. Please note: Tracking numbers for all RMAs and Part Request will be emailed to each customer once the item has shipped.
Thank you,

Why are there so many shipping delays/technical problems/supplier issues exactly the same time you need a support item or replacement? Companies seem to have an abundance of stock and a very smooth running operation at the time of sale.

Apple will sell you a whole computer all joined together. More pennies, possibly: less stress - definitely.
Not if you want a laptop with a 17" display, they won't.
Ebay, on the other hand...

Boot Camp, Parallels or whatever to run my licensed Windows software would add stress. My games won't run on a Mac without a work-around, Pinnacle Game Profiler doesn't have a Mac version... I'll stick with what I know and keep those "pennies".

I have progressively downsized from 17 to 15 and then a couple of years ago to a 13" Retina and I have to say that I couldn't go back. I had to use my daughter's 15 the other week and I was amazed at how big and clunky it is. And HEAVY too. (... at about 5 pounds or something!)

When I upgrade memory on a machine I'm not familiar with I run the Crucial scanner. It tells you what you have and what you can have. Then you can buy it wherever it's cheapest.

Compressed air > vacuum cleaner (static electricity from a vac can bork electronics) But you probably already know that.

You can use Acronis True Image to clone you OS to a new hard drive if you are satisfied with the way it was running. Saves a lot of time updating and reinstalling your programs. Have you backed up your data to CD/DVD or flash drives yet?
I can give you a link if you want it for free.

Don't know. What are your specs. How old is it?
If you have it working now you can install a lightweight program (Speccy) that will list your specs.

Hhhmmm.... I wanted to add this to the "power supply" post but I guess its locked. So Im working on an HP p6-2100 desktop. It is getting power because the green light in the back illuminates with no issue but the start/stop/power button is doing nothing. I tried changing out the CMOS battery already with no results. Am I going to have to actually change this button? What else can I look at? I barely remember how to add pic to these posts, lol, but I can get you what you need to advise.
PS The lady who owns it thinks, her then dying cats, pee may have dripped down on said power button and somehow shorted it out. For awhile she was able to jiggle it and get a response.

Does the fan on the power supply spin?
I've had on/off buttons stick. Snapping it got it unstuck.
Do you have a multimeter to check continuity on the switch?

Wow that video is exactly what I needed to see. Of course I have no experience with doing this but I think I can do it.
The fan doesnt spin now because its not turning on. Im sure when I get the stuff together to try the video Ill have a better answer.

That's a pretty brutal way of testing the PSU. It could short it out for good and I'm not entirely sure how much it actually tells you. The fan could run and the PSU could still be faulty. A $10 multimeter would surely be a handy piece of kit to have laying around.
It's quite a useful thing to know, though.

Without telling the lady to buy a MAC, aawwwww geeeezzz, how do I fix this? #1-If I use a multimeter do I test at the button or where? #2-Should a fan be running when you just plug the power supply in or does the start button need to be activated to get the fan to run? <-- paperclip theory. #3-Watch this: Can I try this while everything is in the case? Clearly dont want to blow anything up.

I got a PSU tester with my EVGA PSU. It's a piece of plastic you place over the end of the leads. It's basically the paper clip method for dummies. It does the same thing the paper clip does. If you use and it doesn't spin, you need a new PSU. It's a cheap 1st test.
I have started a PC from the motherboard. It's an easy way to see if your button is borked.
Most people don't know how to effectively use a multimeter. These methods work.

While you discuss the paper clip issue ::), I just did the test from the video I posted and shorted the prong and it started. So Im guessing the switch itself was the issue. Its amazing how little faith I have in myself.
OK. Got the button off and one of the connector wires has complete come off. Lets see what eBay has in store for me? DONE! 14.99 free shipping and 30 day warranty. I have impressed myself with me.
Thank you Cindy for believing in you.

That's good news. Had the button been faulty but not obviously so, you could have circuit tested it with a torch bulb, battery and a couple of bits of wire.
I have an LED screwdriver that circuit tests and is a voltage detector. I have it in my pocket as I would a pen. I swear I use it 10 times a week for something or other.

The paper clip way is a fine starting test to see if a PSU is dead or not but it's dumb to use bare wire. I found a nice EVGA page showing the much safer "jumper" way, it's the same one brickbatz just posted up above.
As smokes points out though, the jumper really only lets you know "Dead" or "Not Dead". It can't tell you if any of the power cables are bad or not. A handy tool for your "IT Go-Bag
Multimeters (again as smokes said) will give you even more detail. The cost can vary greatly though based on the quality and features. The "clamp" ones are nice as you can get a reading of a wire/cable without powering down the system, but yeah, those are the more expensive ones.
