I have to work untidily or else I lose everything. Sounds mad I know but believe me, when I had tried to work in an organised way I spend more time looking for my pencil, tape, notebook etc, than I do actually working.

Saying that, my desktop is quite neat.

If you use terminals much, you should check out "Yakuake".  It's a Quake-like terminal alternative to the default terminals.  Hit F12 (or whatever you set) to have it scroll down the window, F12 to hide it.  You can resize it, split it up into multiple terminals, open a new session (tabs display across the bottom).  It's a KDE app so it needs the KDE core to run ("sudo apt-get install yakuake" will catch the KDE dependencies and install them).  I use Gnome but love Yakuake enough that I accept having to almost completely run KDE to have it.
