Can't connect to internet

My daughter brought a netbook (xp) home from school and needs it connected to the internet. I have wireless router (netgear) with my PC (xp) and laptop (Vista) connected to it. They connected no problem when I got the router (about six months ago), but this netbook she brought home today isn't. I went through the usual control panel/network and internet connections/wireless network setup wizard.

It actually connects to my network (signal strength: Excellent), but when you run the browser (IE) it won't connect to the internet, it just gives the "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message.

Any ideas?

I've seen this happen to a few Asus netbooks that were issued by schools, usually running Linux and less commonly XP.

You could try turning off power save if it is switched on for the network adapter of the netbook, or resetting the IP using run - copy and paste netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt then enter and reboot, or the tried and tested method of unplugging everything including the router and rebooting it all half a dozen times until it either works or drives you mad.

You could always check the WEP key again too.

I'll have another think about it and see if I can think of anything else.

Try plugging in an IP address instead of a www.blah.com address.  I know if I put 74.125.19.147 in the browser line it takes me to an english Google page.  If this works, then it looks like the netbook isn't getting the DNS servers from your router.  You can plug the DNS servers in manually on the netbook itself.

I just tried this and still get the same message.

This gave me "The address is not valid".

You don't have MAC filtering enable don your router do you?

Also, on your own computer go to www.samspade.org and do a whois on www.google.com .  If it gives you a different IP address then 74.125.19.147, then try the new IP on the netbook.  The IP Address might not be valid for you because of the proxying and routing google does to load-balance traffic.

I just did this, gave me 74.125.19.99, when I put this in the netbook's IE it gave me the "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message.

Can you hard wire it to see if that works?  If it does it would rule certain things out.

Is it getting an IP address from your router's DHCP?  Open up a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_results.txt" (without the quotes) <enter>.  Then type (in the command prompt) "notepad.exe c:\ipconfig_results.txt" (again w/o quotes) <enter> and copy paste the results here.

I don't think these machines are always second hand. In my experience the schools negotiate deals with Asus etc for students to have their own comps.

You could also try resetting the winsock settings.

Run - "netsh winsock reset catalog" - reboot.

... or something.

There's a tick in the use a proxy server for your LAN box, and one in bypass proxy server for local addresses.
