Tsunamis
« on: March 11, 2011, 03:04:00 AM »
I most sincerely hope that anyone on the west side of the U.S and anyone else around the Pacific basin do not have to suffer the destruction that the possible forthcoming Tsunamis will wreak.

I have many friends on the smaller islands of Japan and I fear that whatever comes next, they will not be able to circumvent or avoid it.  I am quite literally praying that the energy from the massive earthquake can dissipate in less devastating ways than Tsunamis.

I hope your friends in Japan are okay, smokey.

The news here is covering the coastal areas from Monterey Bay, San Francisco and beyond. I too have friends and relatives in these areas. I know they aren't in immediate danger, but it's still scary to watch what's going on there.

Unfortunately I've seen some pretty scary images from Japan but hopefully, smokester, you're friends are fine.
My sister and brother in law are in Acapulco and both their mothers where freaking out here bc they couldn't communicate with them. A couple hours ago they called and they're OK. The authorities there are confident that they'll have really big waves but nothing more dangerous.

Thankfully, it seems that the energy released by the quake did dissipate over distance, and even the closest islands to Japan were relatively unaffected.

Japan though looks like it has taken a real beating and most of my friends are in Okinawa which was predicted to get hit, but I haven't heard anything yet either way?  My friend's place was right by the Pacific so I am praying they headed inland or even to the safety of one of the U.S bases.

Just found out my supervisor is in Taiwan visiting his wife's family.  No worries for him except that his return flight is through Tokyo.  :o

I just got an email from Japan saying that everyone I know there is ok.  Apparently Okinawa was pretty unaffected too, however, all of Japan lost a lot of countrymen so I don't suppose anyone there feels very happy about anything right now.

Got a message from family there; they're okay.  They weren't hit by the tsunami but they weren't spared by the earthquake.  Food, water, power and lots more are rationed.  The last message they left was that they were going to look for somewhere to buy food.  Apparently, there's a food shortage.  We're just happy they're okay.

Glad to hear the good news from the both of you. Even though it's likely to take a while for things to be back to the way they were, I can only hope that things get easier for everyone over time.
